Before switching hosting providers, get clear written answers on uptime commitments, migration work, security, backups and restores, support, long-term cost, capacity, and how you can leave. Then inventory your site files, database, email, DNS, and domain arrangements: these services may be with different companies, and moving one does not automatically move the others.
What should you ask a prospective hosting provider?
Ask each provider the same questions and compare its written answers against the reason you are leaving. A promise is useful only when you can tell what it covers, how it is measured, and what remedy applies if it is not met.

1. What uptime do you commit to, how is it measured, and what happens if you miss it?
Ask for the service-level agreement (SLA), including its measurement period, exclusions, reporting method, and remedy. A general reliability claim is not the same as a measurable commitment with a defined consequence. For example, a September 2026 checklist gives a 99.99% uptime SLA with a service credit as an example of a verifiable promise—not as an industry-wide reliability figure. The actual terms depend on the provider, plan, and contract.

A 2019 procurement document from Pakistan’s Securities and Exchange Commission specified 99.995% availability, daily incremental and weekly full backups with one-month retention, and virtual-machine recovery within four hours. Those were requirements for that particular procurement, not universal hosting standards or recommendations for every site. Read the procurement document.

2. What migration work is included, and who does it?
Ask whether migration covers site files, the database, email, DNS, and platform-specific configuration. Clarify what access or credentials the provider needs, who verifies the migrated site, what happens if the move fails, and whether migration assistance is included in the plan or billed separately. Make sure responsibilities are explicit: “migration included” can mean different things unless the tasks and boundaries are written down.
3. Which security protections are included, and what costs extra?
Ask for the specific protections included in your plan and where the provider’s responsibility ends. Depending on your needs, ask about software updates, malware response, firewall or DDoS coverage, and incident escalation. Broad security language alone does not establish that a particular control, response time, or guarantee is part of the service.

- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
4. How are backups made, retained, restored, and exported?
Ask about backup frequency, storage location, retention period, restore steps and charges, and whether you can download a complete copy. Confirm that a usable restore path exists rather than relying only on the presence of a backup feature. DreamHost’s guidance recommends backing up before making account changes and lists website files, databases, email, and DNS records among the items to preserve. See DreamHost’s transfer guidance.

Ask which support channels are included, when they are staffed, and whether they will help with migration-related problems. If a site outage or failed move would be urgent, ask how escalation works and who handles it. “24/7” is meaningful only when the provider explains what support is actually available around the clock.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
6. What will the service cost after the introductory period?
Compare renewal charges over the term you expect to use the service, not just the initial offer. Include likely add-ons and related costs such as domain renewal, resource overages, backups and restores, security, migration, and premium support. The provider’s current plan and contract determine the real total; a promotional starting price does not.
7. Does the plan fit the site now, and how can it grow?
Ask about the resource limits that apply to your plan and the options and costs for upgrading. Compare those limits with your own requirements for traffic, storage, application needs, and performance. There is no universal threshold that identifies the right plan for every site, so make the provider explain its limits in terms you can evaluate.

8. How can you leave, and what can you take with you?
Ask about cancellation, how long data remains available after cancellation, whether you can download a full backup, and who controls the domain registration. Confirm that you can export the site data you need and understand any steps or fees involved before you commit.
What must you protect when planning the move?
Separate hosting, domain, DNS, and email
These are distinct services, even when one company provides several of them. WordPress.com explains that transferring a domain does not itself move website content or email hosting. Review its domain-transfer guidance and identify which company currently handles each part of your setup.

Record DNS before changing anything
Save a readable copy of your current DNS records and note what each one supports. Your website can point to a new host while email or other services stay where they are; that may require changing only the website’s A records rather than replacing the full DNS configuration. Do not change mail-related records unless email is intentionally moving too. DreamHost describes this distinction in its hosting transfer instructions.
Back up and establish a recovery route
Before the move, make independent copies of the site files and database, and include email if it is in scope. Preserve the DNS records as well. Confirm who will perform each migration task and how you would restore the original setup or recover data if the destination is incomplete. DreamHost’s guidance puts the backup before account changes; its transfer article outlines the items to consider.
Check the actual plan and contract
Do not assume one provider’s terms apply to another. Price, SLA exclusions, resource limits, security features, migration scope, and restore fees vary by plan, location, and contract. Resolve those details for each provider on your shortlist before making a decision.

Use the same checklist for each provider, then give the greatest weight to the issue that prompted your switch. For example, if your current problem is an unreliable site, focus first on a measurable uptime commitment and its remedy; if the main concern is the move itself, scrutinize migration scope, backup access, and recovery responsibilities.
- Written uptime commitment, measurement, exclusions, and remedy
- Migration tasks included, customer responsibilities, and failure handling
- Specific security controls and any additional fees
- Backup frequency, retention, restore procedure, charges, and export options
- Support channels, availability, and urgent escalation
- Expected cost over the full term, including likely extras
- Current resource limits and the upgrade path
- Cancellation, data retention, export, and domain control
The best next host is the one that addresses your actual reason for leaving and can explain its commitments and boundaries in terms you can verify. Complete your inventory and preserve your data and DNS configuration before pointing the site to the new provider.
