Restream is the more direct fit if you want to upload a recording, schedule it as a YouTube event, and have it repeat automatically within a defined limit. Its help documentation describes up to 10 plays and a maximum stream duration of 40 hours, with looping available on the Marathon and Media add-ons. Switchboard Live can relay prerecorded video, but its documented method uses a separate compatible encoder; Switchboard says it does not store prerecorded files. Neither documented workflow establishes unattended, indefinite 24/7 playback from one video.
How the two workflows differ
| Decision point | Switchboard Live | Restream |
|---|---|---|
| Where playback happens | A separate compatible encoder plays and sends the prerecorded video; Switchboard relays the feed and says it does not store the file. Switchboard FAQ | In Restream’s hosted Upload & Stream scheduled-event workflow, using an uploaded or previously recorded video. Restream scheduling guide |
| Scheduled start | The cited FAQ does not establish scheduled playback of a prerecorded file. Switchboard’s homepage currently labels Scheduled Start/Stop “Coming Soon.” | The event starts automatically at its scheduled time, even if you are offline. YouTube supports an advance event post, according to Restream’s guide. |
| Repeat and duration | The reviewed FAQ does not document a native repeat count for prerecorded video. | Up to 10 plays and a maximum 40-hour stream; looping is documented for Marathon and Media add-ons. See the looping guide and scheduling guide. |
| Destinations | The FAQ says a workflow can include up to 30 destinations and that RTMP is the currently supported ingest protocol. | Event setup lets you select channels. Restream’s pricing FAQ describes 30+ social channels and custom RTMP; the event guide notes some end platforms can still require a manual Go Live action. |
| Best-supported fit here | You already use a playback-capable encoder and want Switchboard’s destination management. | You want hosted scheduling and a bounded repeat without keeping your own playback encoder running. |
Choose Switchboard when you want an encoder-led setup
Switchboard is a relay and destination-management layer in this workflow, not the place where the video file is stored or played. Its FAQ names OBS, Ecamm, and Switcher Studio as encoders that support streaming prerecorded video. The encoder sends the video to Switchboard over RTMP; each Switchboard workflow has its own server URL and stream key.
- In Switchboard, create or open a workflow and copy that workflow’s server URL and stream key.
- In a compatible encoder such as OBS, Ecamm, or Switcher Studio, configure the stream destination with those details.
- Set the encoder to play the prerecorded video and start sending it to Switchboard.
- Select the destinations for the workflow, including YouTube, then verify the live output at the destination.
The cited Switchboard FAQ does not establish a native scheduled start or prerecorded-video loop count. Plan to manage playback and restart behavior in the encoder unless current Switchboard documentation for your account confirms otherwise. Its FAQ also says streams are not stored or archived by Switchboard.
Choose Restream for hosted scheduling and finite looping
Restream documents a more self-contained route: create a prerecorded event, select the video, choose its start time and channels, and let Restream start it automatically. Its guide says YouTube can receive an advance event post. Some other end platforms, including TikTok or Instagram in the guide’s examples, may still require an action on the platform after Restream starts.

- Create a new stream in Restream and choose Pre-recorded livestream, then Video.
- Select an existing recording or upload a video file.
- Enter the event title, description, date, and time. Add a thumbnail if desired.
- Set a loop count if the account and add-on support it. Restream’s looping help page documents up to 10 repetitions and a maximum total stream duration of 40 hours.
- Select the channels, including YouTube, and create the event. Restream says it will air automatically at the scheduled time.
Restream says prerecorded-video streaming is available to all users, while file size and storage depend on add-on tier. Its guide lists the following figures as accessed on 2026-10-03; pricing and packaging can change, so check the current checkout details before buying.
| Restream tier shown in the guide | Price shown, accessed 2026-10-03 | Video library allowance | Maximum resolution listed | Looping |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premier | $39/month | 2 hours | 1080p | Not listed as available |
| Marathon | $79/month | 4 hours | 1080p | Available |
| Media | $239/month | 12 hours | 4K | Available |
The Restream looping guide, dated March 11, 2026, says playlists themselves do not support looping. It describes duplicating videos in a playlist, up to a 40-video playlist limit; that workaround is different from the documented loop control and does not make playback indefinite.

What “a YouTube loop” can and cannot mean here
If “loop” means replay a recording a fixed number of times for a scheduled event, Restream documents that feature and its limits. If it means keep one video broadcasting continuously, day and night, indefinitely, the cited Restream guide’s 40-hour ceiling is not enough to establish that result. The Switchboard FAQ does not document native hosted playback or looping for prerecorded files; its documented path depends on a separate encoder.
Before choosing, decide how long the broadcast must run, whether you need an event announced on YouTube in advance, and whether you are willing to keep an encoder responsible for playback. A YouTube channel’s eligibility, copyright status, and the exact behavior of a particular recording or account are not established by these vendor workflow guides. Check YouTube’s current requirements and make sure you have the rights to stream every item in the recording.
