Choose OBS when you need to build and encode a production. Consider Switchboard when you need to route one encoder feed to multiple platforms or want its destination controls, team features, archives, or Enterprise 24/7 Streams listing. If the only destination is YouTube, multistream routing may add little; if there are several destinations, it may simplify routing. Neither product should be treated as proof of continuous uptime without explicit service terms.
How OBS and Switchboard work together
Switchboard’s documented connection method uses a custom service in OBS. OBS sends its encoded feed to Switchboard; Switchboard then starts one or more destinations. The confidence monitor lets you check the incoming feed before you send it onward.
- Prepare the OBS production. Create the scene and sources you need. For a prerecorded loop, add a media source and enable repeat. A repeating media source does not by itself establish automatic recovery if OBS or the computer stops.
- Set the output in OBS. Select a custom service and enter the Switchboard stream URL and stream key in the matching fields. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to the associated input.
- Choose encoder settings for the whole route. Switchboard’s setup guidance recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and 30 or 60 fps. Its OBS walkthrough also suggests “veryfast” CPU usage. Select bitrate according to your upload capacity and the requirements of the destinations, and verify current YouTube requirements before going live. These are vendor setup recommendations, not a guarantee of long-run stability.
- Start OBS and test the incoming feed. Confirm that the Switchboard confidence monitor shows video and a receiving state. A test connection does not itself push video live to destinations.
- Start destinations. Once the feed looks right, start the destination or destinations together or individually in Switchboard.
- Stop in the documented order. Stop the encoder first, then stop the destination stream or streams as needed.
What the Enterprise “24/7 Streams” label does—and does not—tell you
Switchboard’s pricing page lists “24/7 Streams” under Enterprise, alongside three RTMP or SRT inputs, 3+ team members, 30+ day archives, phone support, and account hierarchy. Public Sector lists one RTMP or SRT input, three team members, phone support, and a 30-day archive. SMB lists one RTMP input, two team members, and email support. The plan descriptions list unlimited destinations.

These are plan features, not a service-level commitment. The reviewed material does not define an uptime SLA, failover behavior, automatic encoder restart, or recovery after an interrupted connection. It also does not establish YouTube’s current maximum stream duration or archive behavior for this workflow. Before relying on an always-on setup, confirm those points with Switchboard’s current terms and YouTube’s current live-stream documentation. Do not infer recovery or uninterrupted operation from the “24/7 Streams” label alone.
Which approach fits your stream?
- One YouTube destination, custom scenes, or a loop you can supervise: OBS can create and encode the feed; a repeating media source supports a loop. This alone does not establish unattended restart or continuous uptime.
- One OBS feed going to multiple platforms: Switchboard is the routing layer to consider. Check the current plan and input limits against the number of simultaneous workflows you need.
- Team access or archives matter: Compare the plan details directly with your needs, including team-member counts and archive periods; the reviewed page does not show public dollar pricing.
- You need a dependable unattended 24/7 operation: Ask providers for written details on service commitments, interruption detection, recovery, and YouTube duration or archive constraints. The public “24/7 Streams” feature listing alone cannot answer those questions.
