If you’ve opened Outlook on your Mac and it’s suddenly using the New Outlook interface, you’re not alone. Microsoft has been rolling out the newer client gradually, and users often want the older “classic” experience back for layout, shortcuts, and add-in compatibility.
This guide walks you through switching from New Outlook to old Outlook on Mac (macOS) in 2024. It also covers the cases where the switch isn’t available, where accounts behave differently, and what to try when things don’t revert cleanly.

What changed: New Outlook vs old Outlook on macOS
“New Outlook” is Microsoft’s refreshed Outlook client UI. The classic/old Outlook experience is typically referred to as classic Outlook (and uses the older underlying interface and behaviors).

Before you start: prerequisites and what to check
Before switching, verify a few things so you don’t lose time chasing the wrong screen.
- Mac model + OS: Confirm you’re on a supported macOS version (commonly macOS 13+ or current supported releases, depending on your Outlook build).
- Outlook version: Check which Outlook you’re using by opening Outlook, then looking for version/build info under the app menu (often Outlook > About Outlook).
- Microsoft 365 vs standalone: Note whether your email is a Microsoft 365 work/school account, an Exchange account, or an IMAP/POP account.
- Company policy: If this is a managed work/school Mac, your admin may control which Outlook clients are allowed.
If you’re not sure, don’t worry—you’ll confirm during the steps below.
Method 1 (most common): Switch back using the New Outlook toggle
Most people can revert using a built-in toggle inside the New Outlook client.
-
Open New Outlook on your Mac.
-
Click Outlook in the top-left menu bar.
-
Select Preferences.
-
Look for a setting related to New Outlook or Try the new Outlook.
-
Turn the setting Off (or choose an option like Switch to classic Outlook / Use classic Outlook, depending on the wording you see).
-
Close and re-open Outlook.
-
Confirm you now see the classic UI (different ribbon/toolbar layout and older command placements).

Method 2: Confirm you’re actually using the new app build
Sometimes people have both app entries on the dock (or in Finder), which can make it look like a toggle “did nothing.”
-
Quit Outlook completely: Outlook > Quit Outlook.
-
Open Finder and go to Applications.
-
Look for separate Outlook entries. Depending on your install, you may see one labeled Outlook and another that behaves like New Outlook.
-
Open the classic Outlook app entry (the one that matches your older UI).

Send yourself a quick test email and confirm it uses the classic experience.
If you only see one Outlook app, you’re likely relying on the internal toggle from Method 1.
Method 3: Re-launch and re-sync after switching
After switching, Outlook may need time to refresh mail folders, cached content, and search indexing.
-
Re-open Outlook and wait for the inbox to load fully.

When you don’t see the toggle in Preferences, the most common causes are rollout timing, account type, or admin policy.
1) Make sure you’re in New Outlook’s settings, not macOS system settings
Only the Outlook app settings can switch clients. Ensure you’re in Outlook > Preferences while the New Outlook client is open.
2) Check for an Outlook restart requirement
Some builds require a full app restart to apply the change. Quit Outlook and re-open it from the Applications folder if needed.
3) Confirm your Outlook is updated
Build changes sometimes add or remove the revert option. Update Outlook from the official updater your organization uses (Microsoft AutoUpdate on macOS is common).

-
Run updates for Microsoft 365 apps.
-
Restart Outlook and re-check Preferences.
4) Account-level behavior differences
Some users report mixed experiences based on whether their accounts are Microsoft 365/Exchange vs IMAP/POP. If you use multiple accounts, test by temporarily removing the less common one (only if you understand the impact) and re-check the UI.
5) Managed device or policy locks
If your Mac is work-managed, your admin could enforce New Outlook. Look for company branding in Outlook preferences or policies via your organization’s IT documentation.
- If you’re on a work/school account, ask IT whether classic Outlook is still supported on macOS for your tenant.
- If you have a personal account, test by adding it to Outlook (if allowed) to see whether revert behavior differs.
6) Reset Outlook profile items (last resort)
If the UI is stuck due to cached preferences, you may need a reset. Be careful: profile resets can affect signatures, rules, and cached data.

In some rollouts, Microsoft limits full reversion or removes the switch entirely. If you can’t get classic Outlook back, here are practical alternatives.
Use the classic Outlook entry if it exists
Some installs keep both clients side-by-side. If you find an older Outlook app entry in Applications, use that rather than the New Outlook toggle.
Adjust New Outlook to feel closer to classic
If the UI can’t be reverted, focus on the settings that most affect daily use: reading pane, message list density, notifications, and default reply behavior.

Common mistakes that keep you stuck on New Outlook
- Not closing the app fully: Background Outlook processes can keep preferences from applying. Quit and relaunch.
- Changing the wrong setting: Preferences must be changed inside the Outlook app while New Outlook is active.
- Assuming both apps are the same: If two Outlook entries exist in Applications, opening the “wrong” one makes it feel like the switch didn’t work.
- Expecting instant sync: Mail, rules, and search can take a few minutes to re-index after switching.
- Skipping updates: The revert toggle may only appear in certain builds; an outdated client can hide the option.
Security, privacy, and data integrity considerations
Switching between Outlook clients should not delete your mailbox, but it can change what you see while caches rebuild.
- Don’t remove accounts casually: If you must reconfigure, verify you know which mailbox type you’re removing (Exchange/Microsoft 365 vs IMAP).
- Be cautious with add-ins: Some add-ins are supported in classic Outlook but behave differently in New Outlook. If you use tools like CRM or ticketing integrations, check with the add-in vendor if UI compatibility matters.
- Allow time for search: Re-indexing affects how quickly messages show up in search right after switching.
Common FAQs
Can I switch back from New Outlook to old Outlook on every Mac?
Not always. Availability depends on your Outlook build, your account type (Microsoft 365 vs IMAP/POP), and whether your organization controls the client experience. If the toggle isn’t present, you may need to update Outlook or rely on the separate classic app entry.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat if I switched, but my toolbar still looks like New Outlook?
Quit Outlook fully and re-open it. If the UI still doesn’t change, verify you launched the classic Outlook app (not New Outlook) from Applications or the dock. Then wait a few minutes for the UI and cached components to finish loading.
Will switching affect my rules, signatures, or archived mail?
Rules and signatures should persist, but transitional states can be confusing. After switching, test one change end-to-end: create a quick draft, send/receive a test, and move a message between folders to confirm behavior.
Does this work for Microsoft 365 work or school accounts?
Often yes, but not guaranteed. Admin policies can restrict which Outlook client versions are available. If your Preferences doesn’t show the revert toggle, contact your IT team with the exact Outlook version from Outlook > About Outlook.
Is there any difference if my account is IMAP or POP?
It can. Some users report different client behavior across mailbox types. If you have both Microsoft 365 and IMAP accounts, try switching with only one account temporarily active to isolate whether the UI is locked by a specific configuration.
Bottom Line
To switch from New Outlook to old Outlook on Mac in 2024, start with the built-in toggle in Outlook > Preferences, then fully quit and relaunch to confirm the classic UI. If the option is missing, verify you’re using the correct Outlook app entry and check for updates or policy restrictions.
If you hit a wall, use the troubleshooting checklist to isolate whether the issue is a build/version gap, a dual-app install, or tenant-level control.
