What Party Chat vs Game Chat Actually Means on PS5
Party Chat connects the people in your PlayStation party, even if you’re playing different games. It’s the most consistent option for group voice.
Recommended Free Tools
Game Chat is the voice channel inside a specific game session (match/lobby). Many games treat it separately from PS5 party audio.
#1 Best Overall
- PULSE Elite wireless headset comes with PlayStation Link USB adapter, PULSE Elite charging hanger, Carrying case, Mounting plate, USB cable and Printed materials
- PlayStation Link wireless connection for PlayStation 5 consoles, PlayStation Portal remote player and PC / Mac
- Bluetooth 5.0 and 3.5mm audio jack for Mobile devices
- USB Type-C port for charging
Switching “between” them usually means two things:
- Who your microphone is sending your voice to
- Which chat you hear in your headset (and through which output device)
Prerequisites (So Switching Works Every Time)
- You’re signed into the same PSN account that owns the party.
- Your headset is connected to the PS5 (or via Bluetooth adapter / DualSense). Confirm you can hear something in any app.
- You know whether your goal is hearing game chat, speaking into game chat, or both.
Quick Method: Use the Control Center to Toggle Voice Output
When you’re already in a party and you want to change what your headset outputs (or to push audio routing toward game chat), the Control Center is the fastest path.
Steps:
- Press PS on your DualSense to open the Control Center.
- Go to Sound/Screen (or find Sound in the Control Center tiles).
- Select Voice Chat / Party & Game Chat options (wording can vary slightly by firmware/game).
- Choose the routing option that matches your goal, such as:
- Party Chat (prioritize hearing party)
- Game Chat (prioritize hearing game)
- Both (if your PS5/game supports simultaneous routing)
- Confirm by backing out to the match.
If you don’t see a “Voice Chat” toggle in Control Center, use the longer settings method below—some games and setups hide or override certain routing options.
Switching Per Game (Common Variations You’ll See)
PS5 gives you party routing, but games decide whether “Game Chat” is available, whether you can hear it, and whether your voice goes there automatically.
Battlefield / Call of Duty style party settings
Many shooters let you pick voice channel inside the match settings (often labeled Voice Chat with options like On, Party Only, Team Only, or All Lobby).
Open the in-game Settings > Audio (or Sound) and ensure Voice Chat is enabled and targeted correctly.
Fortnite style in-game voice settings
Fortnite (and similar games) usually provides an in-game voice option that distinguishes party audio from gameplay voice. If your PS5 party is active, Fortnite can default voice to party.
Check Settings > Audio and look for Voice Chat and any option that chooses party/team/lobby routing.
Discord-style cross-chat (if your game supports it)
If you’re using a headset setup with a separate app (like a Discord overlay) the “Game Chat” you hear may not be truly PS5 game chat. In those setups, PS5 routing can still mute or redirect the PS5 microphone while your phone/PC handles the other stream.
To avoid confusion, test using only the PS5 headset first, then layer in third-party chat later.
Audio Routing Settings That Control Where Your Voice Goes
If the quick toggle doesn’t behave the way you expect, the underlying audio routing settings are usually the culprit.

Set Party Chat Output for Speakers/Headset
On PS5, party chat output controls where party audio is sent. If this doesn’t match your headset, you’ll think you’re “switched” but you’re actually hearing the wrong stream.
Steps:
- From the PS5 home screen, go to Settings.
- Select Sound.
- Open Audio Output.
- Confirm your output device (for example: Headset connected to controller or Bluetooth headset).
- Back out and verify the Control Center voice routing now shows the expected results.
Set Microphone Input Device
Your mic input device affects whether your voice is even going to the PS5 voice system (party/chat). If your mic isn’t detected, you’ll “switch” perfectly and still sound muted.
Steps:
- Go to Settings > Sound.
- Select Microphone.
- Confirm the correct input device is selected (for example, Controller microphone or your headset mic).
- Perform a quick voice test by speaking and checking the input meter (if available).
Adjust Chat Audio Balance (If Available)
Some setups offer a balance control (voice vs game audio). If you can’t find a dedicated slider, it may be hidden behind the Sound device configuration for your headset.
Set the mix so you can clearly hear the chat stream you’re switching into.

I want my party to hear me, not the lobby
Keep your party active and route voice output to Party Chat. Then make sure the in-game voice chat is either disabled or set to Off / Party Only (depending on the game’s options).
If your teammates still hear you, check if the game has an option like Mic: Team or Voice Channel: Team that overrides party routing.
I want to talk to teammates in-game and keep the party listening
Route your headset output toward Game Chat (so you hear teammates), then in-game set voice chat to Team or the closest equivalent. Keep your party audio output on Both only if you actually want party members to hear the same mic stream.
If you don’t want the party to hear your game talk, keep party output to party only and use the in-game voice channel to handle team comms.

Choose a routing option in Control Center that indicates Both (or enables simultaneous hearing). Then verify the game’s voice chat is configured to your desired channel (often Team).
Expect trade-offs: some games cap mic routing when multiple voice streams are enabled, so test by speaking to see where your voice arrives.

Most problems come from one of four places: mute state, wrong mic device, wrong audio output device, or the game overriding voice routing.

Make sure you’re not muted
- In your party, open the party overlay and check mute icons on your name.
- For gameplay chat, check the in-game mic indicator. Many games show a mic crossed-out icon.
- Also check the DualSense headset mute button (if you’re using one) and any headset hardware mute switch.
Check party membership and voice permissions
Party chat routing won’t work if you’re not in the correct party or if a participant doesn’t have voice permissions (some parties have host controls or privacy behavior).
Try: leave the party and re-invite, then re-check the Control Center voice routing.
Reset audio routing defaults
If switching stops working after settings changes, revert the audio input/output to a known-good configuration.
- Go to Settings > Sound.
- Re-select your correct Audio Output device.
- Re-select the correct Microphone input.
- Restart the game and retest inside the match lobby.
Test with a second headset or device
If possible, confirm whether the issue is the headset or the routing.
- Test your headset on the party chat screen.
- Then test your mic by talking while routing to game chat in the Control Center.
Game chat disabled for privacy settings
Some games let you block voice, limit communications, or require you to accept audio permissions. If “Game Chat” is greyed out or never transmits, check the game’s privacy/communications page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can I hear party chat but not game chat?
Your audio output is likely still set to prioritize party chat, or the game’s voice chat is muted/disabled in its audio settings. Use Control Center routing first, then check the game’s Settings > Audio > Voice Chat.
Why can teammates hear me in party chat but not in game chat?
Your microphone input may be routed to party only, or the game may be configured to a different voice channel (team vs lobby). Check PS5 microphone device selection and the in-game voice channel setting.
Can I switch mid-match without restarting?
Often yes, especially when using the Control Center voice routing toggle. If the game ignores mid-match changes, return to the lobby and repeat the routing selection before re-joining the match.
What if Control Center doesn’t show a party/game chat toggle?
Some games and headset configurations hide those controls. Go through Settings > Sound to verify the correct audio output and microphone device, then adjust voice routing from within the game’s audio settings.
Bottom Line
To switch between Party Chat and Game Chat on PS5 quickly, use the Control Center voice/chat routing and confirm your headset output device is selected correctly. Then make sure the game itself is set to the voice channel you want (party, team, or lobby).
If switching “works” but you still can’t hear or speak correctly, troubleshoot in this order: mute status, microphone input device, audio output device, and finally the game’s in-match voice settings.
