A report about patent publication EP 4813482 adds a technical distinction: Nintendo Patents Watch says the Game-Key Card app and eShop app are separate versions delivered from different servers, with a warning when one is already in memory. That detail comes from secondary reporting, not an independently verified reading of the patent text.
What the patent report says is different
Nintendo Patents Watch’s September 30, 2026 summary of EP 4813482 describes a Game-Key Card as carrying title information, an icon, an app ID, a vendor ID, and a cartridge ID. According to that summary, on first insertion the console fetches an app and icon; the downloaded icon replaces the one on the card. The app runs only while the associated cartridge ID is present, and the console periodically checks that the card remains inserted and that its ID matches. Nintendo Patents Watch’s technical summary is the source for these specifics.

Separate app versions and a memory warning
The summary says the Game-Key Card app and eShop app are different versions downloaded from different servers. It also reports that the console warns users before downloading one if the other is already in memory. Gameranx’s October 2, 2026 report repeats those points and attributes them to Nintendo Patents Watch.
This is not evidence that Game-Key Card downloads are guaranteed to remain available if Nintendo changes or ends an online service. The EPO Espacenet record linked for EP 4813482 was unavailable to the reporting sources, so the server and memory details should be treated as a specialist summary of the publication, not quoted as independently checked patent wording. The summary also does not establish whether Game-Key Card, eShop, and standard Game Card versions share save data.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
How a Game-Key Card works in practice
Nintendo’s official Switch 2 Game-Key Card overview says the card does not contain the full game data. Insert it, connect to the internet, and download the game to system memory or a microSD Express card. The amount of free space required is printed on the game package.
- First download and launch: An internet connection is needed for the initial download and first launch. Nintendo says, “An internet connection is only required when you launch the game for the first time.”
- Playing later: Keep the Game-Key Card inserted. After the initial setup, the game can start offline unless that particular game requires online access.
- Storage: The downloaded data uses system memory or compatible microSD Express storage; the card itself does not eliminate the download or its space requirement.
- Lending: Nintendo says Game-Key Cards are not tied to a Nintendo Account. The owner can lend the physical card; the recipient inserts it and downloads the game data on their own console.
Nintendo’s September 23, 2026 Game-Key Card explainer contrasts this with a regular physical game card, which contains game data and can be played by inserting it without a download step.

Game-Key Card, physical game card, or eShop purchase?
The central difference is where the game data lives and what you must do to access it. Nintendo treats eShop digital purchases as virtual game cards associated with a Nintendo Account; its Virtual Game Card Guide explains how those purchases can be loaded and moved between linked consoles.

| Standard physical game card | On the card, according to Nintendo. | Insert the card; Nintendo’s explainer describes no Nintendo Account tie for the physical card. | Nintendo describes insertion and play without a download step. | The physical card can be lent. |
| Game-Key Card | Downloaded to system memory or microSD Express. | Keep the card inserted; Nintendo says it is not tied to a Nintendo Account. | Internet and enough free space are needed for the download; first launch requires an internet connection. | Hand over the card; the recipient downloads the game data on their own console. |
| eShop digital game / virtual game card | Downloaded to system memory or compatible microSD Express. | The purchase is associated with a Nintendo Account and managed as a virtual game card. | A download is required; Nintendo’s virtual-card process uses internet when loading or moving cards between linked systems. | Nintendo supports lending to members of the account family group through its virtual-card process. |
The patent report’s separate-server detail concerns app delivery, not a promise that eShop and Game-Key Card games have identical access rules. For a buyer, the practical distinctions are whether a download is needed, whether the physical card must stay inserted, whether an account is involved, and how Nintendo handles lending or transfers.
