A sea cucumber that swims through the open ocean may intercept some of the organic material that would otherwise sink toward the deep seafloor. In a 2026 report, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) describes Pelagothuria natatrix catching falling marine snow in the Galapagos water column—a behavior that could make it an unusual participant in the ocean carbon cycle. The observations suggest a possible ecological role; they do not quantify how much carbon the species processes or stores.
What is the surprising link?
Most sea cucumbers live on or near the seafloor, where they scavenge organic material that has already sunk. Pelagothuria natatrix is different: MBARI describes it as living in the water column and feeding on marine snow while particles are still descending. That puts the animal upstream of deep-seafloor scavengers and microbes in the movement of organic matter through the ocean.

Marine snow is a drifting mix of organic particles, including material from plankton and other organisms. Some of that organic matter contains carbon originally taken up from the atmosphere as carbon dioxide by surface-ocean plankton. As it sinks, midwater animals consume and transform it; material that continues downward can later be processed by organisms on the seafloor.
How does the swimming sea cucumber catch marine snow?
MBARI reports that the animal’s specialized tube feet form a webbed veil. It opens the veil like a funnel facing toward the surface, positioning its feeding tentacles to catch particles drifting down through the water. In this way, P. natatrix feeds in the water column rather than waiting for organic matter to reach the seabed.

The distinction is about where in the sinking pathway the animal feeds. It does not mean the sea cucumber captures carbon dioxide directly from the water or permanently locks carbon away.
What did the Galapagos observations find?
MBARI reports that Senior Scientist Bruce Robison analyzed observations from 23 submersible dives in the Galapagos. The sea cucumbers were observed at depths of 250 to 650 meters (approximately 820 to 2,100 feet). MBARI also reports relatively high observed densities, which is why the animal’s feeding behavior may matter ecologically.

These are observations of animals, habitat, and feeding behavior—not a measured carbon-flux total. The report does not state how much marine snow the animals consume, what fraction of sinking organic carbon they intercept, or how much carbon remains stored over time.

When a midwater grazer consumes sinking particles, it can redirect some organic matter into its own body and into other food-web pathways. That may alter how much material continues toward the deep seafloor and how it is processed on the way. MBARI therefore presents P. natatrix as a potentially important midwater grazer in tropical ocean carbon cycling, and describes its activity as a possible short-circuit in deep-sea carbon flux.

“Short-circuit” here refers to a change in the route organic matter takes: some particles are eaten in midwater instead of arriving intact at the seafloor. It should not be read as evidence that the species removes a known quantity of carbon from the atmosphere or provides a quantified long-term carbon store. The announcement offers no global carbon budget for the species.
How unusual is Pelagothuria natatrix?
MBARI says that among more than 1,700 known sea cucumber species, P. natatrix is the only one known to live this way in the water column. Most sea cucumbers are associated with the seafloor and feed on organic material there. The contrast helps explain why observations of a swimming, particle-catching sea cucumber attracted attention: it occupies a different position in the ocean’s food and carbon pathways.

What the study establishes—and what remains unknown
- Reported: a water-column-living sea cucumber catches sinking marine snow with a web formed by specialized tube feet and feeding tentacles.
- Observed in the Galapagos: the species occurred at 250–650 meters during observations analyzed from 23 submersible dives.
- Suggested, not quantified: feeding in midwater may redirect organic carbon before it reaches the deep seafloor.
- Not established in the announcement: a rate of carbon consumption, a share of regional or global carbon flux, or the duration of any carbon storage.
MBARI identifies the associated paper as B. H. Robison, “Pelagic sea cucumbers in the Galapagos: Midwater grazers that short-circuit deep-sea carbon flux,” Ecology 107(9), e70536 (2026), DOI 10.1002/ecy.70536. The findings and publication details summarized here are reported in MBARI’s announcement.
For historical context, a 1990 Smithsonian monograph by J. E. Miller and David L. Pawson surveys swimming sea cucumbers and analyzes swimming behavior in four bathyal species; its repository record includes study of P. natatrix off the Galapagos. That earlier work is background on swimming behavior, not the source of the 2026 carbon-cycle finding.
