Canceling the previous search is not enough to guarantee that an older result cannot overwrite a newer one. In Swift, cancellation asks obsolete work to stop; before applying a result, your code should also verify that the request still belongs to the current query.
Why cancellation alone cannot prevent stale search results
Swift task cancellation is cooperative. Calling Task.cancel() marks a task as canceled, but it does not forcibly stop arbitrary code or automatically make that code throw. Apple puts it plainly: “Cancelling a task does not automatically cause arbitrary functions on the task to stop running or throw errors.” Apple’s Task.cancel() documentation describes this behavior.

A search operation may therefore finish after cancellation was requested—for example, if some work it performs does not check or respond to cancellation. If that task then writes its result to the UI or application state, it can replace results from a more recent query. Cancellation concerns whether work should continue; it does not establish whether a result is still valid to commit.
Use cancellation and request identity for different jobs
A reliable latest-search flow has two separate safeguards:

- Cancel superseded work to ask the previous task to stop and reduce unnecessary work.
- Check ownership before committing to discard a result unless it still corresponds to the current request.
The ownership check is an application-level design pattern inferred from Swift’s cancellation semantics, not a guarantee or built-in search feature provided by Swift. The official documentation explains cancellation behavior; it does not prescribe a particular request-identity implementation.
Track the current request with a generation token
One straightforward approach is a monotonically increasing generation number. Each new search receives a new number. The task captures its number, and the code compares it with the current generation immediately before applying the result.

- When a new query arrives, advance the generation and keep its value as that request’s token.
- Request cancellation of the previous search task, if one exists.
- Start the new search and capture its token along with the query.
- When the search completes, compare its captured token with the current generation immediately before changing results.
- Apply the result only if the tokens match; otherwise discard it as stale.
The comparison must happen at the commit point, not only when the task starts. A request that was current when it began may no longer be current when it finishes.
Make long-running work cooperate with cancellation
Cancellation is most useful when the work checks for it or calls operations that respond to it. Task.checkCancellation() throws when cancellation is observed. For a long operation, check at appropriate points where stopping is safe and useful; a single check at the beginning cannot stop work that continues afterward without further cooperation. Consult the current Apple Task documentation for API details.
Rank #3
A cancellation handler can run a callback promptly when a task is canceled, which can be useful for cleanup. It does not determine whether a completed search result still belongs to the latest query. Keep the ownership comparison separate from cleanup logic.
When task groups are involved
If a search uses structured child tasks, cancellation of a task group propagates to its child tasks. That helps manage cancellation across a tree of related work, but it still does not validate a result against the query that is current when the result is applied. Work-structure cancellation and request ownership solve distinct problems. See the Swift concurrency guide and Swift TaskGroup documentation.

Check a latest-search implementation against these questions
- Stopping obsolete work: Is the prior task canceled, and does the work cooperate by checking or responding to cancellation?
- Preventing stale commits: Is request identity checked immediately before results update state?
- Cleanup: Is there prompt cancellation cleanup that belongs in a cancellation handler?
- Work structure: Is the search a single task, or does it create structured child work whose cancellation should propagate?
These checks address different failure modes. A cancellation-aware search can still need an ownership guard, and an ownership guard can prevent stale commits even when cancellation does not stop every part of the old operation.
