Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Running database migrations during startup avoids competition between app instances only when exactly one instance runs that startup path. With two instances connecting to the same database, both may try to migrate concurrently. Whether that causes one to wait, an error, a collision, or a harmless second run depends on the migration runner and database—not on SvelteKit itself.
Why one instance is different from two
SvelteKit is the application framework; it does not define how migrations are coordinated. That behavior belongs to the deployment lifecycle and the chosen ORM, migration runner, and database. A Prisma guide for SvelteKit demonstrates server-side database access but does not prescribe running migrations at application startup or coordinate them across instances: Prisma’s SvelteKit guide.

One instance
With exactly one application instance, there is no competition from a second instance running the same startup migration against the same database. That does not establish that a migration is repeatable, non-destructive, or safe while the app begins serving traffic. Those properties depend on the migration and deployment sequence.

Two instances
If two instances start together and each invokes the migration runner, both can reach the same database at once. The outcome is tool- and database-specific: the runner might serialize the work, or the second invocation might encounter a conflict or error. Do not assume every setup fails—or that every setup has a lock.

Where migrations fit in a production deployment
A common production pattern is to run migrations once as a coordinated deployment step, before new application instances take traffic. This makes the migration visible as a distinct deploy operation rather than work hidden in each server’s startup logs. It also lets the deployment define what happens if the migration fails.
Fly.io documents one concrete implementation for its SvelteKit deployment flow: a release_command runs on a temporary Machine built from the new image, with secrets loaded, before any Machine takes traffic. A non-zero exit fails the deployment, while the prior version continues serving. This is a Fly.io deployment feature, not a SvelteKit requirement: Fly.io’s SvelteKit hosting guide.

What the migration tools document
Prisma with PostgreSQL
Prisma documents that concurrent db migrate runs against PostgreSQL serialize: one waits for the other. Treat that as a specific documented guarantee for Prisma and PostgreSQL, not as a promise for every Prisma database connector or ORM: Prisma’s migration workflow documentation.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor production or staging, Prisma’s current workflow documentation describes checking and previewing migrations before applying them. Separately, the Prisma CLI v7 reference says migrate deploy applies pending migrations but does not check for database drift or schema changes by itself. Those are distinct responsibilities; applying pending migrations is not the same as verifying that the live database matches the expected schema: Prisma CLI v7: migrate deploy.

- Complete Accessories: We provide the accessories you need, including 2 x Pallets, 145 x M5*10 Cross Head Screws, 4 x Casters, 4 x M10*50 Expansion Screws,10 x M6*12 Cage Nuts, 1 x Grounding Wire, 1 x User Manual.
- Wide Application: The server rack wall mount maximizes the use of available space, suitable for retail venues, classrooms, offices, and other places where space is limited.
Drizzle Kit
Drizzle documents drizzle-kit migrate as applying generated SQL migrations and drizzle-kit check as checking generated migrations for collisions. A generated-file collision check is not evidence of a runtime lock when two application instances execute migrations concurrently. The Drizzle overview does not establish such multi-instance serialization: Drizzle ORM overview.

Compare the deployment choices
| Consideration | One coordinated deploy step | Migration from each instance’s startup |
|---|---|---|
| Concurrency | One migration job avoids duplicate invocations from app instances; the runner’s own behavior still matters. | Two or more instances can invoke the runner concurrently unless the runner documents protection for the actual database. |
| Traffic sequence | Can be arranged to finish before new instances take traffic, as in Fly.io’s documented release command. | Depends on startup and readiness behavior; instances may be starting while migration work is still running. |
| Failure visibility | The deployment can fail at the migration step. Fly.io documents that its previous version continues serving after a failed release command. | Failure may appear in individual startup logs or readiness outcomes; exact behavior depends on the host and app. |
| Schema compatibility | Still requires checking whether old and new app versions can safely operate during the schema change. | Also requires checking compatibility; startup placement does not make destructive changes safe. |
| Operational ownership | Migration execution is represented by a distinct deployment job that can be observed and retried according to the pipeline. | Migration execution is part of each instance’s startup path and may be distributed across its logs. |
If migrations must run at startup
- Identify the exact stack. Record the ORM and migration-runner version, database engine and version, command being invoked, and the hosting platform’s startup and readiness lifecycle.
- Verify concurrency behavior in its documentation. Look specifically for a documented advisory lock, lock table, compare-and-swap mechanism, or other serialization for that database. A migration history table or generated-file collision check alone does not prove that concurrent runtime execution is locked.
- Test simultaneous launches. Start two instances against a disposable database and observe whether one waits, both complete, or an error occurs. Test the same command and conditions used in deployment.
- Review retries and partial completion. Determine whether each migration is transactional, whether it can safely be retried after an interruption, and what happens if one instance exits after another has started applying changes.
- Check compatibility during the change. Confirm that the old and new application versions can operate safely against the schema while migration and rollout overlap, particularly for destructive changes or backfills.
What to verify for your SvelteKit app
- The migration command is run once by a coordinated release step, or the exact runner/database combination documents and passes a concurrency test.
- The deployment’s traffic and readiness sequence is understood, including what users see if migration work is incomplete or fails.
- Schema changes are compatible with the application versions that may be serving during rollout.
- Failure and retry behavior is deliberate rather than inferred from a migration history table.
