Sussex Woodland Project Maps 5,570 Trees, More Than Expected

Volunteers with the Lost Woods of the Low Weald and Downs project had recorded 5,570 trees by 3 October 2026, more than expected. The figure is a survey tally—not evidence that the number of trees in Sussex has grown. It reflects volunteers finding and recording trees as they cover more ground. BBC News reported the total; the project separately said it had mapped more than 5,500 ancient and veteran trees in a 28 September update.

What the 5,570-tree total counts

The BBC News report published on 3 October 2026 said volunteers had recorded 5,570 trees across 314 square kilometres between Lewes and Storrington since surveying began in March 2024. Its breakdown was 348 ancient trees, 2,467 notable trees, 2,743 veteran trees, plus the remainder in another category. Records are checked before being added to the Woodland Trust’s Ancient Tree Inventory.

The categories matter: the 5,570 figure includes ancient, veteran, notable and other recorded trees. The Lost Woods project homepage’s 28 September 2026 update used narrower wording, saying more than 5,500 ancient and veteran trees had been mapped. Those two statements have different dates and scopes, so they should not be treated as identical totals.

Why volunteers found more trees than expected

The count is rising as the survey reaches new ground and records trees that were not previously mapped. The report attributes to Lost Woods outreach adviser Bob Epsom the observation that new clusters appear on the map where volunteers have been active. That points to survey coverage and discovery—not growth in the underlying tree population. The report describes the tally as higher than expected, but does not give a quantified original target.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Ancient, veteran and notable are distinct recording categories; the total is not simply a count of one type of tree. Mapping makes locations and condition more visible, helping inform care and protection and adding records to the Ancient Tree Inventory.

What the Lost Woods project does

Lost Woods of the Low Weald and Downs is a five-year project in Sussex, between the South Downs National Park and the High Weald National Landscape. The Woodland Trust says the programme aims to improve and reconnect fragmented ancient woodland, support biodiversity, train woodland managers, involve communities and record ancient, veteran and notable trees. It is made possible by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and works with Action in Rural Sussex, Sussex Wildlife Trust and Small Woods Association. The Woodland Trust project overview describes the area as having 14% tree cover, compared with 22.8% in the South Downs and 24.8% in the High Weald; it also says 60% of woods in the project area are neglected and in poor condition. The page does not state a publication year for those figures.

Tree recording is one strand of a broader landscape programme that also includes woodland restoration and management. The project says better records help improve understanding of where trees are and support decisions about their care.

How to help record an old tree in Sussex

Lost Woods says volunteer recorders receive around one or two half-day training sessions and are allocated areas of one square kilometre to survey. They record tree locations and condition. The project page currently says applications for the recorder role are paused, so check it for the latest status.
