For most people, the practical starting point is a nearby server or the app’s “Recommended for you” option. The right choice then depends on whether you need a stable IP, a two-server route, or help connecting on a restricted network.
How many servers and locations does Surfshark have?
Surfshark’s current server page advertises 4,500+ servers in 100 countries. Surfshark Support repeats that figure. The provider does not display a publication date for the number, so treat it as Surfshark’s current claim, not an independently audited count. A larger advertised network does not by itself establish speed, privacy, or availability at a particular moment. Check Surfshark’s live server list for current countries, cities, and location-specific features such as P2P.

Country and city availability can change. Some countries offer city-level choices, while others may offer only a country selection; consult the live list rather than assuming a specific location is available.

Surfshark says the best choice depends on distance and current server load. A nearby location is a sensible first choice for speed, but it is not guaranteed to be the fastest: network conditions and load can change, and results may differ between locations.

- Start nearby. In Surfshark’s app, choose a nearby country or city if one is listed.
- Try the recommendation. The app’s “Recommended for you” option is another practical starting point.
- Compare a few nearby locations if performance matters. Test the same activity and connection conditions; do not assume that a country is universally fastest.
- Choose a specialized option only if you need it. Static IP, Dedicated IP, MultiHop, and NoBorders serve different purposes, explained below.
A VPN server selection changes the IP address and apparent online location associated with your connection. It does not physically move you or change your actual location.
What is the difference between physical and virtual servers?
A physical server location refers to where the server hardware is situated. A virtual location lets a VPN provider offer an IP address associated with a country even though the physical server is elsewhere. Surfshark says it uses virtual locations where establishing physical infrastructure is difficult and describes them as functionally identical from the customer’s perspective. That is a statement about how the location works for the customer; the IP’s apparent country does not establish where the underlying hardware is. Surfshark explains its virtual server locations.

Which Surfshark server type should you use?
For ordinary browsing, start with a standard country or city location. Consider the alternatives when your needs are more specific:

Static IP versus Dedicated IP
These labels are not interchangeable. A Static IP location uses an IP shared by users connected to that location; it provides stability while connected, but Surfshark Support says a reconnect may assign another standard IP. A Dedicated IP is assigned to one user, which can help with services that expect a consistent address but reduces the separation that comes from sharing an IP.

There are also setup constraints: Surfshark Support says an account can purchase only one Dedicated IP, and its selected location cannot be changed later. Review the location before choosing it. Surfshark’s setup instructions.
