A 16-inch 2-in-1 is better if you mostly work at a desk and want a large screen, a permanently attached keyboard, and more built-in ports. The shared “2-in-1” label obscures the key difference: one starts as a tablet; the other remains a laptop even when its screen folds back.
This comparison uses current US manufacturer listings for Microsoft Surface Pro and Lenovo Yoga 7/7i 16-inch models, checked October 7, 2026. Specifications and bundles vary by model and configuration; these are manufacturer specifications, not results from matched hands-on testing.

How the two designs work
Surface Pro: tablet first
The Surface Pro is a tablet with an adjustable kickstand and a removable keyboard. Microsoft lists 12-inch and 13-inch models, weighing 1.5 lb and 1.97 lb respectively. Those figures are for the tablet, not a complete setup with keyboard, pen, case, or charger. The keyboard and Surface Slim Pen are sold separately, so check the contents and cost of the exact bundle you are considering. Microsoft Surface Pro specifications
Its detachable design is useful when the screen is the main tool: reading, annotating documents, sketching, or taking handwritten notes while standing or moving around. For laptop-style work, the kickstand supports the screen and the keyboard attaches; that setup is less like a conventional laptop on the lap than a single hinged chassis.

16-inch convertible: laptop first
A 16-inch convertible has a laptop body and a 360-degree hinge. The screen can rotate into laptop, tent, or tablet positions, but the keyboard stays attached. Lenovo’s US listings give starting weights of 1.77 kg (3.90 lb) for the Yoga 7 2-in-1 Gen 10 16-inch AMD and 1.92 kg (4.23 lb) for the Yoga 7i 2-in-1 Gen 10 16-inch Intel. These are manufacturer-listed laptop weights, not matched carry-weight measurements against a Surface setup. Lenovo Yoga 7 16-inch AMD · Lenovo Yoga 7i 16-inch Intel
For example, the Yoga 7 2-in-1 Gen 10 16-inch AMD combines the larger convertible format with touch input and a 360-degree hinge. Its cited US listing describes a 16:10, 1920×1200 IPS touchscreen as a base option; other listings may offer different panels, including higher-resolution OLED. Verify the precise SKU rather than assuming all 16-inch versions share one display. The Yoga Pen is optional on the cited model.

Compare the practical differences
| Workflow consideration | Surface Pro | 16-inch convertible |
|---|---|---|
| Carrying and handheld use | Tablet-only listed weights are 1.5 lb for 12-inch and 1.97 lb for 13-inch. Detach the keyboard when you want a tablet. | The cited Yoga examples start at 3.90 lb (AMD) and 4.23 lb (Intel) as complete laptop bodies. The keyboard remains attached. |
| Screen workspace | Microsoft lists 12- and 13-inch models. The 12-inch listing specifies a 3:2, 2880×1920 touch display. | The cited Yoga models are 16-inch. The AMD base option is 16:10, 1920×1200 IPS; panel options vary by SKU. |
| Keyboard and desk work | Keyboard attaches when needed; a kickstand props up the tablet. | Integrated keyboard and a larger display suit a laptop-centered desk setup. |
| Ports | The listed 12-inch model has two USB-C/USB 3.2 ports. The 13-inch listing has two USB-C/USB4 ports and Surface Connect. | The cited AMD listing includes HDMI, two full-function USB-C ports, USB-A, headset audio, and microSD. The cited Intel listing includes HDMI, Thunderbolt 4 USB-C, USB-A, and microSD. |
| Pen and accessories | Surface keyboard and Surface Slim Pen are sold separately. | Keyboard is built in; Yoga Pen is optional on the cited AMD model. |
Ports and display details are configuration-specific. If you rely on a particular connector, confirm it on the exact product listing; the difference may determine whether you need a dock or adapter.
Which form factor fits your workflow?
Choose Surface Pro if tablet use is a regular part of the day
- You read, review, or annotate documents while standing, commuting, or away from a desk.
- You write or draw directly on the screen and want to hold the display separately from its keyboard.
- You move between tasks where a detachable keyboard is useful, rather than needing a keyboard attached at all times.
The decisive advantage is not simply that the screen accepts pen input: it is that the tablet can be used on its own. In laptop mode, you are relying on the kickstand and a separate keyboard.

Choose a 16-inch convertible if the laptop setup is your default
- You spend most of your time seated typing, working in spreadsheets, or keeping multiple windows visible.
- You want a large touch display and an integrated keyboard without assembling a tablet-and-keyboard setup.
- You use tent or presentation mode occasionally, but do not expect to hold a laptop-sized device like a small tablet.
- You want common connectors such as HDMI and USB-A built into the cited Yoga configurations.
A 360-degree hinge makes a laptop more flexible, but does not make its tablet mode equivalent to a detachable tablet in handheld use.
For a mixed schedule, count tasks and locations
Write down your three most common tasks and where you do each one. If most involve seated typing, the 16-inch convertible is likely the better fit. If several involve handheld reading, inking, or moving between locations, the Surface Pro is likely the better fit. This is an inference from the designs and listed specifications, not a result from comparative hands-on testing.

Compare the complete setup, not just the screen or base device
Surface tablet weights exclude accessories, while the cited Yoga starting weights describe laptop bodies with keyboards attached. For a fair packing comparison, weigh or check the exact Surface keyboard, pen, charger, and case you plan to carry, then compare that with the convertible and its charger. Also compare retail bundles: Microsoft says the Surface keyboard and Surface Slim Pen are sold separately, and Lenovo lists the Yoga Pen as optional on the cited AMD model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBattery claims do not establish a winner. Lenovo lists a 70 Wh battery capacity for the 16-inch AMD Yoga, while Microsoft publishes an “up to” Surface Pro duration based on specified video-playback conditions. Capacity and manufacturer playback estimates are not equivalent to one another or to mixed-use work runtime. Lenovo’s user guide covers Yoga 7/7i specifications, including battery capacity: Yoga 7/7i 2-in-1 Series User Guide.
Bottom line
Pick the Surface Pro when handheld tablet use, detachable typing, and inking are central to your routine. Pick a 16-inch 2-in-1 when you want a large-screen laptop with an integrated keyboard and use tablet mode as an occasional alternative. The right choice depends less on the “2-in-1” label than on whether your working day starts with a tablet or a laptop.
