Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Ultra is a newly announced, 15-inch Windows touchscreen positioned for NVIDIA and CUDA-related workflows. Apple’s MacBook Pro comes in 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch sizes. The available information does not establish a matched independent comparison, so buyers whose decision depends on speed, sustained performance, or real-world battery life should wait for testing of the shipping Surface model.
Which one should you choose?
- Consider Surface Laptop Ultra if you need Windows or rely on an NVIDIA/CUDA workflow—and have confirmed that your exact apps, plug-ins, peripherals, and configuration are supported. Microsoft’s professional, creator, developer, and local-AI positioning describes its intended use, not independently verified performance for every workload.
- Consider MacBook Pro if you need macOS, depend on a Mac-specific workflow, or prefer one of Apple’s available 14.2-inch or 16.2-inch models.
- Wait for independent tests if your choice hinges on sustained performance, thermals, noise, battery life during your particular work, or application compatibility. The currently available claims do not provide a like-for-like independent result.
How do the operating systems and workflows differ?
The practical dividing line is often Windows versus macOS. Microsoft positions the Surface Laptop Ultra around Windows, NVIDIA RTX Spark, CUDA, local AI, and professional workloads. Apple’s comparison page identifies MacBook Pro models but does not establish app-by-app compatibility for this comparison.

A product category or manufacturer’s positioning is not proof that a particular application runs on a specific configuration as you need it to.

| Feature | Surface Laptop Ultra | MacBook Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Display size and family | 15-inch PixelSense Ultra touchscreen, according to Microsoft. | 14.2-inch or 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR, according to Apple. |
| Touch and pen input | Touchscreen; Microsoft says Surface Pen, Surface Slim Pen, and similar pen input are not supported. | The cited Apple comparison page establishes the display sizes and family; it does not establish touch or pen support. |
| Peak HDR brightness | Microsoft states 2,000 nits peak HDR brightness, measured with HDR content over a 10 percent window; it says sustained and SDR brightness are lower. | Microsoft says the Surface figure is up to 25% higher than MacBook Pro M5 Pro published specifications as of October 1, 2026. This is Microsoft’s published-spec comparison, not an independent test. |
Those brightness figures are not a complete picture of display quality or a matched viewing test. Consider the size and input you need, and treat the peak HDR comparison as a manufacturer claim with its stated measurement conditions.

What do price and launch timing tell you?
Microsoft announced a Surface Laptop Ultra starting MSRP of $2,599. Pre-orders opened October 7, 2026, and Microsoft says availability begins October 16, 2026. That is a starting price, not a configuration-matched comparison; regional pricing and configurations may differ.
The Apple comparison page establishes MacBook Pro sizes but its captured price fields did not provide usable prices. Compare current prices in your region only after matching screen size as closely as practical, chip, memory, and storage. The available figures do not support a claim that either laptop is the better value.

What is known about performance and battery life?
Microsoft’s battery information describes tests on pre-production devices and software, using different procedures for local video playback and web browsing. Microsoft also warns that battery life varies significantly with settings, use, and other factors. These vendor test disclosures are not a guarantee of everyday runtime, and results from unlike procedures should not be treated as directly comparable.

In particular, Microsoft’s positioning around professional and local-AI work does not show how a shipping Surface configuration performs against a particular MacBook Pro in your applications. If those factors determine your purchase, wait for independent testing under workloads similar to yours.
