Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Microsoft says the new Surface Laptop Ultra delivers local AI responses twice as fast and generates video six times faster than an M5-generation MacBook Pro. Those figures are Microsoft’s claims, not independently verified results: reporting on the comparison says Microsoft did not identify the Mac configuration, AI model, software, or a reproducible test method. The available evidence therefore does not show that the Surface is faster overall.
What Microsoft claims—and what the reports say is missing
Microsoft’s reported comparison gives the Surface Laptop Ultra two headline ratios: 2× faster local AI responses and 6× faster video generation than an M5-generation MacBook Pro. Notebookcheck and The Next Web report that Microsoft did not disclose the comparison Mac’s exact configuration, the AI model, or the software used. The reporting also does not provide a method that readers can reproduce. Notebookcheck and The Next Web describe the ratios as company claims, not independent benchmark findings.

Without those details, the figures do not establish how either laptop performs on a particular workload, whether the machines were compared under equivalent conditions, or whether the result holds beyond Microsoft’s chosen tasks. They also cannot support a general conclusion that one computer is faster for everyday use.
What a reproducible comparison would need
A useful performance comparison has to define the task and the conditions closely enough for another tester to repeat it. For the two workloads Microsoft cited, that means disclosing at least:
#1 Best Overall
- Brilliant Display – Stunning 13.8" PixelSense touchscreen[1], with brilliant LCD display[2], unleashes luminous whites, deeper blacks and colors so richly saturated bringing vivid life into every frame – perfect for work, school, streaming and creative tasks.
- Power that lasts all day – With 20 hours of battery life[3], the new Surface Laptop powers through your entire day, so you can create, work and stream from morning to night without reaching for a charger.
- Work at the speed of your ideas – Built with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite (12 Core) processors, Surface Laptop delivers fast, AI‑accelerated performance—making it the most powerful Surface laptop for everything from multitasking to demanding workloads.
- The ports you need – Charge on-the-go, transfer data fast, or create the ultimate desktop set up with two USB-C / USB4[4] ports.
- Built-in AI Companion – Work smarter, create freely, and communicate with confidence—Copilot[5] on Windows 11 is always there to help.
- Exact hardware: each laptop’s processor, memory, storage, and configuration, along with its power mode.
- Local AI workload: the model and quantization, prompt, software version, and measured outcome—such as time to first token, total response time, or token throughput.
- Video workload: the source material, effects, software version, export settings, quality target, and elapsed time.
- Test conditions: whether each laptop was plugged in or running on battery, how thermal behavior was handled, and whether results were repeated.
These are the details needed to interpret or replicate the reported ratios; they are not a description of a test Microsoft has disclosed. Until comparable information is available, “2×” and “6×” are useful as descriptions of Microsoft’s positioning, but not as independently established measurements.
How the announced prices compare
Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop Ultra at a starting price of $2,599. Tom’s Guide lists that base Surface configuration with 24 GB of memory and 512 GB of storage. Its early comparison lists MacBook Pro M5 Pro starting configurations at $2,499 for the 14-inch model and $2,999 for the 16-inch model, each with 24 GB of memory and 1 TB of storage. These are starting configurations, not storage-matched comparisons. Tom’s Guide also notes that a full test is needed before deciding whether the Surface is better.

- With 16 GB of memory, runs as many programs as you want without losing the execution
- The 13.5" 2256 x 1504 screen provides a great movie watching experience
- 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures
- 8 Hours battery run time helps you stay unwired and work longer non-stop
| Starting configuration listed | Memory | Storage | Starting price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface Laptop Ultra | 24 GB | 512 GB | $2,599 |
| MacBook Pro M5 Pro, 14-inch | 24 GB | 1 TB | $2,499 |
| MacBook Pro M5 Pro, 16-inch | 24 GB | 1 TB | $2,999 |
The table reflects the starting configurations and prices reported by Tom’s Guide on October 8, 2026; the listed storage capacities differ. A buyer comparing value should match the configurations they would actually purchase rather than treating the starting prices as a like-for-like test.
What is known about the Surface launch
Microsoft’s October 7, 2026 announcement set Surface Laptop Ultra pricing from $2,599, with preorders announced and availability beginning October 16, 2026. Microsoft describes the laptop as having NVIDIA RTX Spark and up to 128 GB of unified memory, positioning it for demanding local models and agent workflows. Those are vendor product descriptions, not independent performance results. Microsoft’s Devices Blog also specifies peak HDR brightness of 2,000 nits measured over a 10 percent window with HDR content, compared with published MacBook Pro M5 Pro specifications as of October 1, 2026. That is a separate display specification with a stated measurement condition; it does not supply methodology for the AI or video comparisons.

- THE PORTS YOU NEED — Two USB-C / USB4[4] ports for fast charging, big file transfers, or hooking up to three 4K monitors when you want a full desktop. Wi-Fi 7 keeps you online and fast wherever you are.
Microsoft also announced a limited Mac trade-in promotion through Microsoft Store online in the United States and Canada. The offer applies to qualifying purchases and trade-ins made from October 7 through November 23, 2026; cash back varies by device and trade-in value. Because those terms are time-limited, check Microsoft’s current offer conditions before relying on them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What buyers can conclude now
The launch claims may point to workloads Microsoft believes favor the Surface, but the public comparison described by the cited reports is not detailed enough to judge the size or broader relevance of the advantage. Independent review evidence was preliminary as of October 8, 2026: Tom’s Guide said it needed a full test, and Notebookcheck called for independent testing. No independent performance result in the cited coverage confirms either ratio.

For a purchase decision, compare the exact configurations and software you intend to use, then look for independent tests that disclose the workload, settings, and measurement method. Until those results are available, the most accurate reading is that Microsoft has made a specific performance claim whose underlying comparison has not been made reproducible in the reporting cited here.
