One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf your Surface keyboard has stopped responding, start by installing available Windows and Surface updates, reseating the keyboard connection, and restarting the device. Then check the Caps and Fn indicator lights and, on Surface Pro models, test the keyboard in UEFI. Those checks help distinguish a connection or hardware issue from a Windows software problem.
Doesn’t connect or respond at all
For a Surface Pro or Surface Go with a magnetic keyboard, check the connection before assuming the keyboard has failed. Microsoft recommends detaching it, inspecting the connector area for debris, damage, or anything blocking contact, and reconnecting it with the magnets aligned. Restart the Surface, then check for available updates in the Surface app and Windows Update. See Microsoft’s Surface keyboard troubleshooting steps.

- Detach the keyboard and inspect its connector and the Surface connection area. Remove visible debris; do not force or scrape the contacts.
- Reconnect the keyboard, making sure the magnetic connection is properly aligned.
- Restart the Surface. If it remains unresponsive, install available updates through the Surface app and Windows Update, then test again.
- Press Caps and Fn a couple of times and watch their indicator lights. If they do not illuminate, Microsoft says a hardware issue is possible; consider requesting service.
On supported Surface models, Microsoft’s force-restart instructions call for shutting down and then holding the power button for 20 seconds. Follow the instructions for your device at Microsoft’s troubleshooting page rather than assuming the same restart procedure applies to every Surface.
The keyboard disconnects or stops responding intermittently
Intermittent input can result from a loose or obstructed magnetic connection, available updates, or a Windows software issue. Re-seat the keyboard, check for visible obstruction or damage, install available updates, and restart. If the problem remains, an UEFI test on a Surface Pro can help narrow down the cause.

Test keyboard input in Surface UEFI
Microsoft explains how to enter UEFI and test input in its Surface keyboard troubleshooting guidance. If the keyboard and touchpad work in UEFI but not in Windows, Microsoft says the problem is likely software installed on the Surface and recommends reinstalling Windows.
Microsoft’s recovery option includes a cloud download with “Keep my files.” This reinstalls Windows while retaining personal files, but removes installed apps and drivers and resets settings changes. Review Microsoft’s Surface recovery options before proceeding, and make sure important data is backed up.

A key doesn’t respond or repeats
First inspect the affected key for lodged debris. Microsoft suggests using compressed air or a gentle vacuum with a dust brush to remove debris; avoid pressing hard or using a tool that could damage the key. Its instructions are in Surface keyboard troubleshooting.
If keys continue to repeat or fail to register after cleaning, or if a key is cracked, damaged, or missing, treat the problem as a possible hardware failure. Microsoft recommends submitting a service order for damaged keys and persistent repeating or dropped keystrokes.

Flex Keyboard works attached but not wirelessly
Detached wireless operation applies to the Surface Pro Flex Keyboard, not ordinary Type Covers. Confirm the keyboard is charged and check its firmware in the Surface app. For wireless connection trouble, Microsoft’s Flex Keyboard troubleshooting steps say to hold Esc for about five seconds until the Fn light illuminates, reconnect the keyboard for at least 30 seconds, then detach it and try again.
Surface Book keyboard attachment problems
Surface Book uses a different attachment and detachment arrangement from the magnetic covers on Surface Pro and Go. If its keyboard base will not attach or detach correctly, use Microsoft’s model-specific instructions for fixing Surface Book keyboard attachment problems. Do not apply Pro or Go connector steps as a substitute.

When to repair or replace the keyboard
Use the symptom and test results to choose the next step:
- No response and no Caps or Fn lights: After checking the connection, updates, and restart, a hardware issue is possible. Consider service.
- Works in UEFI but not Windows: Microsoft identifies software installed on the Surface as the likely cause and recommends reinstalling Windows.
- Debris around a key: Clean gently; seek service if the key continues to repeat or does not register.
- Cracked, damaged, or missing key: Request service rather than trying to repair the key yourself.
- Flex works attached but not detached: Check charge and firmware, then follow the Esc/Fn reconnection procedure.
- Suspected failed keyboard: Check warranty and service options before buying a replacement.
If you do replace it, identify the exact Surface model and keyboard generation first. Microsoft’s Type Cover guidance covers Surface Go and Surface Pro 7+ and earlier, and excludes Surface Pro X, Pro 8, and later models for that cover. By contrast, Microsoft’s Surface Pro 13-inch Keyboard product page lists compatibility with Surface Pro (11th Edition), Pro 10 for Business, Pro 9, Pro 8, and Pro X. These examples show why “Surface keyboard” alone is not enough to confirm fit; verify compatibility for your specific device before ordering.
