You can support HEIC uploads without making every visitor download a JavaScript/WASM decoder. Try the browser’s native decoding path first, then WebCodecs where available, and load a fallback such as libheif only when those options cannot decode the file. This progressive approach keeps the fallback out of the initial bundle when your build supports code splitting, but it does not guarantee that every HEIC file will decode natively.
Why HEIC upload support varies
HEIC and HEIF files do not decode consistently across browsers and devices. The compatibility table accessed October 7, 2026, lists Safari 17 and later as supporting HEIF/HEIC, while the current Chrome, Edge, and Firefox versions shown there are listed as unsupported. Treat this as a dated snapshot, not a permanent browser rule: decoding may also depend on the operating system, installed codecs, hardware, and the file’s profile. Can I Use’s HEIF/HEIC table is one point of reference.

For an upload flow, distinguish selecting a file from previewing or converting it. A browser may let a visitor choose a HEIC file even when your app cannot decode it for a preview. Capability probes can help choose a path, but they cannot guarantee that a particular file will decode. Keep a visible failure path rather than treating a successful probe as proof.

A practical order is to attempt browser-native decoding, try WebCodecs when the browser and file support the required codec, and fall back to a JavaScript/WebAssembly decoder if both earlier paths fail. The SU Engineering heic-web project documentation describes this native-to-WebCodecs-to-optional-WASM pattern and dynamically imports its WASM entry point. A dynamic import can keep the fallback out of the initial chunk, but verify that your bundler actually emits a separate asset and that it is requested only when needed.

- 🖼️ No loss in details or image quality.
- 🖼️ No more annoying ads or confusing user interface.

- Route likely HEIC files to the HEIC path. Use file content where feasible. The heic-web documentation warns that a filename or MIME type is a routing hint, not full validation.
- Attempt native decoding. If the browser can decode the selected file, use that result for preview or processing.
- Try WebCodecs if available. Support can depend on the browser, operating system, installed codecs, hardware, and image profile. Handle an individual decode failure even after a positive support probe.
- Load the fallback on demand. Import the WASM adapter only when earlier paths fail. Test the production build’s emitted chunks and network requests rather than assuming the split worked.
- Offer a useful failure route. If decoding fails, explain that the image could not be previewed or converted and let the visitor choose another file or use a supported format.
What the 1.46 MB figure does—and does not—mean
The 1.46 MB figure in the headline is not independently verified by the cited project documentation, so it should not be treated as a universal decoder size. The heic-web README says the download size depends on the bundler output and libheif version. If you publish a size for your own implementation, identify the exact build and emitted asset, and say whether the number is compressed transfer size or uncompressed file size. Also distinguish the fallback transfer from the bytes downloaded on the initial page load.
libheif’s upstream README documents compiling the library to JavaScript and, optionally, WebAssembly. Its tools can decode HEIF/AVIF content to formats including JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and WebP. The artifact you ship depends on your chosen build and configuration; the library name alone does not establish a single bundle size.

Choose conversion behavior deliberately
Converting HEIC to JPEG or PNG may make previews and downstream uploads easier, but conversion can change what your app retains. The cited heic-web converter handles the primary HEVC image and does not copy source EXIF into its output. If your workflow relies on capture time, camera details, orientation, or other metadata, decide whether losing that information is acceptable before using the converted image as the upload itself. The cited implementation also focuses on the primary image, so do not assume auxiliary image information is preserved.

Large or malformed image files can consume substantial resources. libheif documents security limits for very large images and malicious input; the heic-web documentation advises upload-size limits, bounded concurrent decoding, and workers for large or untrusted files. Resizing the returned bitmap does not necessarily limit peak memory during decoding, so a small preview is not proof that decode memory is bounded.

- Browse and view any folder containing *.heic files.
- Open and view *.heic images.
- Save and share *.heic images in *.jpeg format.
- Batch convert any number of *.heic images preserving quality and metadata.
- Preserve all image metadata like: location, Exif, XMP, Copyright, ICC profile.
- Set a maximum upload size appropriate to your product and reject oversized files before expensive work.
- Limit how many files your app decodes concurrently.
- Consider moving decode work to a worker for large or untrusted inputs so it does not block the interface.
- Keep failure handling around every decode and conversion attempt; a browser capability check is advisory.
- Test representative files on the devices and operating systems your visitors actually use.
Test the whole path, not just the happy case
Before deployment, verify the initial page load and fallback load separately in your production build. Test browsers and devices across your expected audience, along with representative HEIC files, including files that exercise the profiles and sizes your visitors are likely to upload. Measure decode time and peak memory on target devices, and confirm that your fallback is not downloaded when native decoding succeeds. The project documentation recommends representative-file and target-device testing; it does not provide a neutral benchmark comparing decoder alternatives.
For a production decision, compare initial JavaScript/WASM bytes against fallback transfer bytes, platform coverage, decode speed and peak memory, metadata and image fidelity, and the maintenance and security burden of the codec build. The available project materials establish that these factors differ, but do not establish a universal winner or a cross-device performance result.
