How much faster was Concorde on London–New York?
NASA’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) reported that Concorde could fly from London to New York in less than 3.5 hours, about half the time typical airliners took for that same distance. On that specific historical comparison, passengers saved roughly half the typical airliner’s flight time—approximately three and a half hours.

This is a route-time comparison, not a universal rule that supersonic aircraft cut every flight in half. The figure describes Concorde service, which ended in May 2003, and should not be treated as a current itinerary or a forecast for future aircraft. NASA OIG’s report gives the time comparison and historical service context.

No. The documented comparison is for the flight journey, not door-to-door travel. It does not calculate time spent getting to the airport, checking in, clearing security or immigration, waiting for a connection, or traveling onward from the destination airport. A shorter airborne leg therefore does not establish an equivalent saving across the entire travel day.

Why cruise speed does not equal total flight time
Aircraft do not spend every minute of a trip at cruise speed. Climb and descent, routing, and operational restrictions all affect duration. The FAA gives Mach 1 as approximately 770 mph and says commercial airlines generally fly around 550–600 mph; these are broad speed references, not a calculation of a particular flight’s arrival time. Mach speed varies with atmospheric conditions. The FAA’s overview provides this context.
Where an aircraft can fly supersonically matters
Concorde flew supersonically only over the ocean. NASA explains that it was too noisy to fly over people, while the NASA OIG report describes the FAA’s 1973 adoption of an overland restriction on civil flight above Mach 1, subject to specified exceptions. A transatlantic flight could therefore use supersonic cruise over ocean without doing so over populated land in the same way. The fraction of a route flown supersonically affects how much time the higher cruise speed can save. NASA’s QueSST article discusses Concorde’s operating context.

What the speed cost passengers
Speed came with substantial trade-offs. NASA OIG reported that Concorde used jet fuel at a rate of 1 ton per seat for a round-trip transatlantic flight and that the average round-trip ticket cost $12,000. The cited passage does not identify the price-year basis for that fare, so it should not be read as a present-day equivalent. Passenger service ended in May 2003. The NASA OIG report records these figures.

A separate NASA article says Concorde tickets cost approximately $15,000 round trip in “today’s dollars,” but its passage does not state the conversion date. The two figures use different stated bases and are not reconciled by the sources; they should not be combined into a single fare estimate. NASA’s 2017 article provides the latter figure.

Is supersonic passenger travel available now?
The cited current policy material describes proposed changes and research, not routine U.S. supersonic passenger service. A DOT-hosted proposed-rule summary says U.S. regulations prohibit routine civil flight above Mach 1 except under operation-specific authorization. It describes a proposal to replace that prohibition with a performance-based, noise-focused framework. In its July 2026 overview, the FAA said two rules were in progress and that it aimed to finalize both by mid-2027. That is a target, not completed permission. The DOT-hosted proposal summary and the FAA overview describe the status.
Research aircraft and demonstrations are not passenger schedules
NASA describes the X-59 as a quiet supersonic research aircraft. The FAA reported that it broke the sound barrier on June 5, 2026, and said NASA would use community-response research to inform future noise thresholds. Those milestones do not establish commercial passenger service aboard the X-59. NASA’s X-59 mission page and the FAA overview explain the research context.

The FAA also describes “Mach cutoff,” in which a sonic boom bends and refracts back into the atmosphere, reducing its impact on the ground. The agency reported that Boom Supersonic demonstrated the technique on its experimental XB-1 in January 2025. An experimental demonstration and proposed rules do not mean scheduled passenger flights are available to book. The FAA’s explainer describes the technique and demonstration.
In that forward-looking context, FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said, “Advances in aerospace engineering, materials science, noise reduction, and new operational concepts will eliminate the old sonic boom.” This is a statement about a prospective regulatory and technology path, not evidence that the boom problem has already been solved. NASA Glenn’s Jimi Russell put the engineering challenge this way in a 2017 article: “A new supersonic commercial airplane needs to beat the boom problem and be efficient as well.” The FAA statement and Russell’s NASA article provide their respective contexts.
How to compare a future supersonic flight with an airliner
When a scheduled passenger service becomes available, compare like with like rather than relying on maximum cruise speed or a manufacturer’s projection. Check:
- Scheduled airport-to-airport duration: use the same origin and destination.
- Supersonic portion: determine how much of the route is actually flown above Mach 1.
- Route permissions: account for overland restrictions and other operational limits.
- Price and cabin: compare the actual fare and cabin class, not historical or unqualified estimates.
- Evidence type: distinguish a demonstrated scheduled service from an experimental flight or projection.
The sources cited here establish a historical Concorde benchmark, but do not establish route-specific present-day supersonic passenger options, schedules, or prices.
