Do not put an ordinary sunscreen patch or sunscreen directly on an open wound. While skin is healing, use the wound dressing recommended for it and protect the area from sun with shade and clothing. After the wound has healed, apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen to the area. The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) guidance reviewed here does not establish a UV rating for ordinary bandages or identify a sunscreen patch intended for open wounds.
What to use while a wound is healing
For a minor wound, the AAD advises gently cleaning it, keeping it moist with petroleum jelly or a similar ointment, and covering it with an adhesive bandage. For a burn, its guidance describes using a non-stick bandage or gauze. Follow the treating clinician’s instructions for stitches, surgery, biopsies, burns, or injuries that are more than minor.

To reduce sun exposure during healing, use shade and cover the area with the appropriate bandage and sun-protective clothing. This is physical coverage, not proof that the bandage blocks UV radiation: the reviewed guidance does not establish a UV protection rating for ordinary dressings. Do not apply sunscreen into an open wound based on this guidance. AAD burn guidance and its minor-wound guidance explain basic care.

Once the skin has healed, the AAD recommends sunscreen on the area to help reduce discoloration and help a scar fade. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. The AAD’s general guidance recommends water-resistant sunscreen, applying it before going outdoors, and reapplying every two hours outdoors and after swimming or sweating. Shade and sun-protective clothing can still help limit exposure. See the AAD’s guidance for healed wounds and sunscreen application advice.
#1 Best Overall
- Breathable & Comfortable: Transparent film dressings are highly breathable, allowing the skin to breathe freely and helping to promote natural wound healing. High ductility, can be used for flexible connectors. Pre-cut transparent design, easy to use, easy to observe the wound site or equipment conditions.
- Waterproof: Transparent ultra-thin film dressing has excellent waterproof performance, and the fixed effect is good, do not worry about falling off. Even in daily bathing, showering, swimming and other water activities, it can effectively block dirt and liquids to avoid wound infection.
- Hypoallergenic: The transparent film dressing consists of a bonded clear polyurethane film and release paper, which is latex free and avoids skin irritation. Waterproof transparent dressing provides gentle and safe fixation, does not stick to the wound after removal, reduces pain, and is easy to change.
- Mutiple Use: The film dressing provides protection for abrasions, cuts, scratches, minor burns, other small wounds, post-operative incisions, and can also be used for intravenous catheter fixation, non-stick dressing protection, baby navel care, post-tattoo care and many other scenarios. Easy to carry, can also be used as an outdoor first aid bandage, to avoid sweat or dust contamination of the wound. It's a must-have wound care bandage for first aid kits.
- Note: Transparent film dressing can be used as a medical fixed and non-adhesive dressing, but do not directly apply to open wounds or wounds with excessive exudation, should be used with gauze or non-woven cloth, when removing the dressing to peel back the dressing rather than pull up from the skin, to avoid tearing the wound again. If you encounter any problems during use, please contact customer service in time.
The AAD says SPF 30 filters out 97% of UVB rays. That is a general explanation of sunscreen labeling—not a measure of protection from every type of UV radiation and not a rating for a bandage or patch. See the AAD’s sunscreen-selection guidance.
How bandages, sunscreen, and scar sheets differ
| Need | Product category | When to use it | What the guidance establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cover a healing wound | Appropriate bandage, non-stick dressing, or gauze | While the wound is open or healing | AAD supports covering wounds; the reviewed guidance does not establish an ordinary dressing’s UV rating. |
| Protect healed skin from UV | Broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher sunscreen | After the wound has healed | AAD recommends sunscreen for healed wound and scar areas. |
| Scar care | Silicone gel sheet | After healing or scabbing, following product instructions or a clinician’s advice | It is a scar-care product, not sunscreen; AAD says not to use it on an open wound or scab. |
Silicone sheets are not a substitute for a wound dressing or sunscreen. The AAD cautions against applying silicone gel sheets to an open wound or scab. Read the AAD’s keloid self-care guidance and its overview of keloid treatment.

When to seek medical advice
Get medical care for a deep or very painful injury, a suspected infection, or a serious burn. For a biopsy wound, contact the dermatologist if pain worsens or you notice swelling, warmth, pus-like drainage, crusting, or fever. If the wound is under a clinician’s care, ask them when it is appropriate to begin applying sunscreen to the area.
