Suniye is an Android reading-aid project built by Himanshu Kumar for his parents, who have weak eyesight and often ask him to read WhatsApp messages, pictures, labels, and documents. It is designed to turn selected text into speech with large Hindi controls, but it is not yet proven as a hands-free family solution: the author says his parents have not tried it under observation, and its WhatsApp reading route remains untested.
What Suniye is designed to do
The pilot supports Android 11 and later. It aims to help someone hear selected text from everyday materials, while keeping the source visible for checking. Rather than relying on one input method, the app is described as accepting material through several Android routes:

- Use the camera to capture printed material.
- Select a saved photo.
- Open a PDF.
- Share text, an image, or a PDF to the app through Android Share.
For WhatsApp, the author describes a floating सुनिए control as the intended route after a caregiver sets it up. That route is a setup walkthrough, not a verified end-to-end test of reading WhatsApp messages.
How the controls and speech work
The daily controls use large Hindi labels: रोकिए (Stop), फिर सुनिए (Repeat), and धीरे सुनिए (Slow). The Stop control is kept below scrolling content so it remains reachable during a long reading. Settings and optional spoken commands are behind caregiver setup.

Suniye uses Android’s accessible text or bundled OCR for Devanagari and Latin text. When OCR recognizes text in an image, the author says the image stays on the phone. New narration, however, is sent as text through an authenticated backend to ElevenLabs, using the Raju voice. Fixed help prompts use bundled Raju recordings.
After a successful reading, its audio is cached so Repeat and Slow can work offline. Starting a new reading requires a connection. If audio is unavailable, the original remains visible; the app does not silently switch to Android or browser speech.

Where OCR and generated explanations need checking
OCR can misread text, especially in dense material. The author reports that a dense bill was misread, prompting a confidence-based request to retake the image. That is a recovery heuristic, not an accuracy guarantee. Amounts, dates, and medicine labels should be checked by a family member before anyone relies on them.
For a photographed amount, the project converts ₹1,250 into Hindi speech wording while leaving the original visible alongside a separate amount hint. Dates retain their written field order. Those presentation choices do not remove the need to verify the source.

A separate Gemma route can produce simpler Hindi explanations and descriptions of pictures where OCR finds no text. It is explicitly barred from guessing image text when OCR misses it. The author describes these explanations as experimental: in examples, the model changed dates, replaced “attach” with “submit,” or added context. The original text stays visible, and a quantity-and-negation guard caught some errors but missed others. Treat an explanation as a convenience, not as a substitute for the original or a family member’s judgment.
What has—and has not—been checked
Himanshu Kumar reports bounded emulator checks on Android 11 and Android 15. The parent-focused revision passed internal layout and bundled-audio assertions at 160% font scaling. But a System UI dialog covered the capture, and later system crashes blocked the full touch walkthrough. The author says the check remains open, and he has not observed his parents using Suniye on their Redmi A4 phones.

Other checks covered specific playback behavior, not overall usability or speech quality. A deliberately delayed-response check did not restart a reading after Stop. A voice-only Android 15 check covered cached replay, Slow, Stop, missing or corrupt audio, wrong-provider audio, and late replies. Host audio was disabled, so the author characterizes this as a check of media state rather than listening quality.

The post also reports isolated project observations, not general performance statistics: one local Gemma response took 2.66 seconds; another call took 32.64 seconds, including 24.96 seconds loading and 2.73 seconds generating. One hosted voice-only check used 27,420 bytes of Raju audio. These figures are author-reported observations from 2026, not benchmarks or independent measurements.

The real test is whether parents can use it alone
The project’s next meaningful test is practical and specific: can each parent read a WhatsApp message and a paper label, then stop and replay without help? The current account establishes the design intent and some bounded emulator checks, but not that outcome. Until the intended users complete that flow on their own phones, Suniye should be understood as a promising personal project under evaluation—not a demonstrated ready-to-use aid for older adults.
