Neither Sunday nor Monday is universally the right first day for a calendar. Choose the layout that is easiest for you to scan and fits the convention of the people you plan with. If you coordinate using numbered weeks, use ISO-compatible week numbering: Monday as the first day and at least four days of the new year in week 1.
What does “first day of the week” mean in a calendar?
It usually means the first column shown in a calendar view. The Unicode Common Locale Data Repository (CLDR) defines this as a regional setting by default, which users or applications can override. It is a display convention, not a universal rule.

That setting is separate from both the first workday and the weekend. A Sunday-first calendar does not mean Sunday is your first working day. CLDR keeps the first displayed day distinct from weekend data, and Apple likewise documents a locale’s preferred first day separately from the first day after the weekend: Unicode CLDR week data and Apple’s first-weekday documentation.
Sunday or Monday: which display should you choose?
Choose the first column that makes your recurring week easiest to understand. If you plan with other people, matching their convention can make shared calendars and conversations less confusing. Neither choice is inherently better; the practical difference is how the week appears on screen or paper.

| Choice | When it may fit | Week-number implication |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday start | When that is the familiar local or personal layout you prefer. | A Sunday-first display by itself does not use ISO week numbering. The week-year assignment depends on the applicable first-day and minimum-days rules. |
| Monday start | When it is the familiar local or personal layout you prefer. | It aligns with ISO week numbering when paired with a four-day minimum for the first week. |
How calendar week numbers work
The first day shown and the numbering of weeks are separate settings. CLDR describes a firstDay value for the weekday a calendar displays first and a minDays value for the minimum number of days a week must have in the new year to count as that year’s first week. Changing either can shift dates near New Year into a different week-year, and can affect whether a year has 52 or 53 weeks. See CLDR’s week-of-year rules.
ISO-compatible week numbering
For ISO-compatible numbering, the week starts Monday and week 1 must contain at least four days of the new year. Microsoft describes this as the four-day option and explains that, in a Gregorian calendar, week 1 is the week containing the year’s first Thursday: Microsoft’s Windows first-week-of-year documentation and first-day-of-week documentation.

Why the New Year can fall in a different week-year
CLDR illustrates the effect with 1998: using Monday as the first day and four minimum days, week 1 ran from December 29, 1997, through January 4, 1998. A Sunday start produces a different first-week assignment. The dates at the edge of a calendar year can therefore carry a week number associated with the adjacent week-year, depending on the rules in use.

- For a familiar weekly layout: choose Sunday or Monday based on which arrangement you find easiest to scan.
- For shared week numbers: agree on the numbering convention with your team or collaborators; choose Monday and the four-day rule when ISO compatibility is needed.
- For a mismatch between layout and work schedule: keep the preferred display and configure workdays separately if your calendar supports it. The first displayed day does not define the workweek.
Calendar apps may follow locale defaults and may also let you override the first day. The exact control varies by app and platform; the relevant distinction is whether you are changing the calendar’s displayed first day, its workweek, or its week-numbering rule.
