Sun drying uses no tumble-dryer operating energy, but it is not reliably faster. Outdoor drying time depends on weather and exposure, while a dryer’s time and electricity use depend on its model, load, and programme. For a specific dryer, compare its energy label and the duration of the programme you plan to use.
Which method is faster?
There is no dependable overall winner. Sunlight and outdoor airflow can help clothes dry, but the result varies with conditions and where the laundry is hung. A tumble dryer has a stated cycle duration for a particular programme and load; that figure is not a promise for every setting or load.

Which uses less energy?
Air drying avoids the dryer’s operating energy
Sun drying does not run a tumble-dryer cycle, so it avoids that appliance’s operating energy for the drying step. This does not establish a universal net household-energy saving: indoor drying can involve other effects, such as added heating or dehumidification, which are not quantified by the available figures.

Dryer consumption depends on the appliance and programme
The European Commission’s estimates for EU laundry dryers in 2020 were 1.4 kWh per cycle on average, 1.0 kWh per cycle for heat-pump dryers, and 2.7 kWh per cycle for electric vented and electric-resistance condenser dryers. These are dated estimates across appliance types, not specifications for a particular current model. European Commission: Tumble Dryers
The Commission says switching to one of the most efficient tumble dryers could reduce energy consumption by around 60%. That is a conditional comparison between dryers, not a claim about savings versus sun drying. Its projected saving of up to 15 TWh of electricity from 2020 to 2040 is an EU-wide estimate, not a household forecast.

How to compare a particular dryer
Use the appliance’s own label or product information rather than a broad assumption about dryer type. In the EU, the current label reports weighted energy consumption per 100 drying cycles and the duration of the full-load eco programme. Those figures describe the eco programme; another programme may use a different amount of energy or take a different time. EU labels have used an A–G efficiency scale since 1 July 2025. For US-market dryers, ENERGY STAR’s Combined Energy Factor (CEF) is a model-comparison measure: a higher CEF indicates greater efficiency. It is not a direct measure against outdoor drying. What affects the practical choice?
- Outdoor conditions: Weather and exposure affect how quickly laundry dries outside.
- Indoor setup: An indoor drying rack is an air-drying option when outdoor drying is impractical; the European Commission recommends using a rack instead of a tumble dryer when possible.
- Washer spin: The Commission advises using the maximum spin speed recommended for the laundry to remove more moisture before drying.
- Load and programme: Dryer energy and duration depend on the model, load, and selected programme, so label figures should be read in that context.
- Garment care: Follow each garment’s care label. The cited guidance does not establish fabric-specific effects on damage or garment life.
EU dryer rules are region-specific
The European Commission says that from 1 July 2025, only tumble dryers featuring heat-pump technology may be placed on the EU market, and the A–G energy label must be displayed. This is an EU market rule; it should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. European Commission: Tumble Dryers
