Use macOS’s built-in Summarize service to condense selected text without Apple Intelligence or another AI summary tool. A recent guide reports that it can be enabled in System Settings and opened from an app’s Services menu; availability depends on the macOS version and whether the app exposes selected text to Services.
What the Mac Summarize service does
The legacy Summarize service shortens selected text by retaining portions of its original wording. It is not the same as a generated explanation: the result may omit context and read unevenly, so check it against the source before quoting it or relying on it.

Apple’s current user-facing documentation highlights Apple Intelligence summaries, which are separate AI-based features. Writing Tools’ Summary or Key Points and Safari’s Summarize command do not meet a requirement to avoid AI tools.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Enable Summarize in macOS
- Open System Settings, then go to Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts.
- Select Services in the sidebar and expand Text.
- Turn on Summarize. This is the reported path in a 2026 guide; Apple does not currently document this legacy service in the Mac user-help pages located for this workflow.
Summarize selected text
- In the app containing the text, select the passage you want to condense. Select all text if you want to summarize a whole document and the app supports that selection.
- Open the app’s Services menu, or Control-click/right-click the selection and look for Services > Summarize.
- In the summary window, use the size slider and choose Sentences or Paragraphs, as reported by the guide. Sentence mode keeps smaller units of source text; paragraph mode may remove entire paragraphs.
- Compare the result with the original to catch missing context or meaning.
Menu labels can vary by macOS release. If the command does not appear, confirm that the service is enabled and try a standard text-editing app. Services depend on the app making selected text available; there is no single universal Summarize shortcut documented for every Mac app.

Text documents and notes
Select the text and use the app’s Services menu or selection context menu if it exposes the command.
PDFs
Preview lets you copy selected text from a PDF with Command-C. If Summarize is not available in the PDF app, copy selectable text into a text editor and try the service there. Apple documents copying selected PDF text in Preview, but does not promise that Summarize works directly in Preview.

The reported workflow requires selectable text, and the available documentation does not establish that this service performs OCR. For a scanned page or image, first use an appropriate OCR process to obtain text, then select that text and try Summarize.

If Summarize is missing
- Check System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Services > Text and make sure Summarize is enabled.
- Confirm that text is selected and that the app exposes it to macOS Services. Try a normal selectable-text app to see whether the command appears there.
- If the source is a PDF, copy selectable text into a text editor and invoke the service in that app.
- Do not treat a custom Shortcuts workflow as an equivalent unless its actions have been verified to perform non-AI summarization. Apple’s general Shortcuts documentation does not establish that a custom shortcut provides this function.
How this differs from Apple Intelligence
Apple Intelligence’s Writing Tools can summarize selected text or provide key points, and Safari can summarize a webpage. Those are AI-based features, unlike the legacy Services workflow, which retains portions of the source wording. Choose the Services method when avoiding AI is essential, and review its clipped output because it may not preserve the original context.
