Sudoku Websites: How to Choose the Right Online Puzzle Platform

A good Sudoku website depends on how you solve. Compare puzzle choice, hints, notes, difficulty labels, and access before you settle on a platform.

The best Sudoku website is the one whose puzzle selection, solving tools, and access fit how you like to play. Difficulty labels such as “Hard” and “Expert” are set by each site, so they are not reliable cross-site equivalents. This guide compares what the available evidence establishes—and gives you a practical checklist for judging a site yourself.

What makes a Sudoku website good?

Start with how you solve, rather than a site’s difficulty names or promotional claims. A useful platform should let you find puzzles at an appropriate level, enter and revise candidates comfortably, and return to puzzles when you want to play.

  • Puzzle choice: Check the range of difficulty and whether you can select puzzles repeatedly, use an archive, or only access a daily puzzle.
  • Solving aids: Look for candidate notes, hints that explain a technique, error feedback, undo, and erase controls. Decide whether you want assistance or prefer a clean grid.
  • Input and readability: Try the site on the device you actually use. Check whether digits and controls are easy to see and whether tapping or keyboard entry feels manageable.
  • Access friction: Check for ads, account requirements, subscriptions, and restrictions that may vary by location. These can change, so verify them on the site rather than relying on an old comparison.

In standard Sudoku, the goal is to fill a 9×9 grid so that every row, column, and 3×3 section contains the digits 1 through 9 without repetition. Sudoku.com’s rules page also describes beginner solving through scanning rows, columns, and boxes.

What the available platform evidence shows

Sudoku.com

The site’s page presents Classic and Killer Sudoku. Classic offers six labels—Easy, Medium, Hard, Expert, Master, and Extreme—while Killer offers Easy through Expert. The page also displays Notes, Hint, Undo, and Erase controls, says hints explain solving methods, and links to printable puzzles. These are features shown on the page, not the results of a comparative usability test. Check the current Sudoku.com page for its live interface.

Web Sudoku

Web Sudoku’s landing page describes its catalog as billions of free puzzles. That claim alone does not establish which solving controls are available, how puzzles are accessed, or how much advertising appears. Inspect the live interface before choosing it for a particular feature.

Other sites and comparisons

A 2025 preprint by Arman Eisenkolb-Vaithyanathan, “Project Patti,” analyzes puzzles from five sites: New York Times, Sudoku.org.uk, Extreme Sudoku, Sudoku of the Day, and Sudoku of the Day UK. It is a study of puzzle difficulty ratings, not a review of current usability, mobile experience, advertising, or subscription value. A third-party comparison raises potentially useful evaluation dimensions such as candidate marks, timers, streaks, and ads, but its specific platform comparisons are not independently established here. Treat those dimensions as questions to check, not confirmed findings.

Why difficulty labels are not directly comparable

“Easy,” “Hard,” and “Expert” are each website’s own categories, not a shared standard. A label is useful for choosing the next puzzle on the same site, but it does not guarantee that a puzzle marked Hard elsewhere will demand the same logic.

In the 2025 “Project Patti” preprint, the author describes a dataset of 1,320 puzzles—60 puzzles for each difficulty level on each of five websites. The proposed difficulty metrics aligned with the sites’ labels for four of the five; Extreme Sudoku was the reported exception. This limited study is evidence that labels can diverge, not proof that every puzzle on any site matches a particular level. Read the study and its methods before treating its result as a universal ranking.

How to assess a Sudoku site for your own use

  1. Choose a representative puzzle. Open the site and select a level you normally enjoy. If there is no level selector, note what choices are available and whether you can revisit earlier puzzles.
  2. Try the input method. Enter several digits and candidate notes using your preferred device. Check that you can correct a mistake without losing your place.
  3. Test the help controls. If available, try a hint and see whether it explains a reasoning step or merely reveals a number. Check whether error feedback helps you learn or interrupts your solve.
  4. Check the routine you want. Look for daily puzzles, archives, or repeatable selection, depending on whether you prefer a brief daily habit or longer sessions.
  5. Review access before committing. Check whether play requires an account, whether ads disrupt solving, and whether any subscription or regional limits apply.
  6. Compare puzzles by experience, not label alone. Solve a few on each candidate site and pay attention to the logic required. One puzzle is too little to establish that a site’s levels are consistently harder or easier.

Choose by solving style

  • If you want multiple variants: Look for distinct modes, such as Classic and Killer, and confirm that the mode and level you want are actually available.
  • If you are learning: Prefer hints that explain a technique and controls that let you undo or erase. A hint that only supplies an answer may be less useful for building solving skills.
  • If you want an uninterrupted puzzle: Check the live page for advertising, sign-in prompts, and other interruptions before settling on a site.
  • If you want a daily routine: Confirm whether the site offers a daily puzzle and whether older puzzles remain accessible; do not assume an archive exists.
  • If you play on a phone or tablet: Test the grid and controls on that device. Feature lists cannot establish whether the touch experience will suit you.

Site features and access conditions can change. The cited pages establish the specific information described above; they do not provide a dated, side-by-side verification of current ads, pricing, or account requirements across these platforms.
