StudyBuddy turns a study to-do list into a small game: complete tasks to earn XP, keep a streak going, and help a virtual plant grow, with a local AI companion offering encouragement and study suggestions. Its creator, Abiba Naushad, says she built it for her friend Laiba, who found studying boring and felt overwhelmed by long task lists. The project is a supportive study aid—not evidence of a tool that diagnoses, prevents, or treats clinical burnout.
Why Abiba Naushad built StudyBuddy
In her project account, Naushad describes a familiar friction: Laiba found studying boring and felt overwhelmed by a seemingly endless list of tasks. Rather than build a general-purpose chatbot, she made a dashboard around the study routine itself, pairing manageable tasks and visible progress with encouragement.

The project title uses “overcome burnout,” but the account describes boredom, overwhelm, stress, and motivation—not a clinical assessment or measured health outcome. StudyBuddy should be understood as a personal productivity experiment, not a mental-health treatment.

- Add or work through study tasks.
- Mark completed work to earn XP and build progress.
- Track activity through daily streaks.
- Let the virtual plant reflect activity: it grows with engagement and can wilt when activity drops.
- Turn to the AI companion for motivational encouragement, study suggestions, simple daily insights, and a generated quote.
That sequence—tasks, XP, progress, plant state, then encouragement—keeps the AI in a supporting role rather than making it the main product. Naushad reports that the goal was to make studying feel less lonely and more approachable; the project post does not provide controlled evidence that the game loop improves study outcomes.
What the reported implementation uses
Naushad describes a React and Tailwind frontend, a lightweight Python Flask server, and Google Gemma 2B served locally through Ollama. In her account, the browser app uses localStorage to persist daily streak information, while the Flask backend calls Ollama’s local API at localhost:11434.

- 52 Weeks Undated Planner : No preprinted fixed dates allow you to start planning at any week without wasting blank pages. You can pause recording and resume later freely, avoiding unnecessary page waste caused by interrupted use of dated planners.
- WEEKLY GOALS & FOCUS SETTING: Prioritize your core weekly objectives at the top of each page to clarify main tasks ahead of trivial affairs. This structure helps you cut down aimless busyness and keep your whole week’s work and life on track.
- DETAILED DAILY TO DO LIST: The page is divided into independent writing areas for Monday through Weekend. You can sort and record work assignments, study tasks and personal errands separately, so important schedules will not be forgotten or omitted.
- BUILT-IN HABIT TRACKER TABLE: Special grid area supports marking daily habit completion status, with columns for goal setting and weekly achievement statistics. It helps you intuitively track persistence progress without purchasing an extra separate habit journal.
- FLAT LAY SPIRAL BINDING: Double wire coil binding enables the planner to lie fully flat for smooth writing without flipping back. Compact lightweight body is easy to slip into backpacks and tote bags, suitable for office work, school study and travel arrangement.
Keeping the model ready
The author says she used Ollama’s keep_alive parameter so Gemma would remain loaded during study sessions, reducing the delay associated with a cold start. She also describes a /quote route that requests a fresh motivational quote when the dashboard opens. These are implementation details reported in the project post; the article does not include independent testing of latency or generated content.

What can be concluded about hardware
Google’s Gemma 2 model card says the model family has open weights and that its smaller models can be deployed on laptops, desktops, or cloud infrastructure. Google’s Gemma execution documentation and Ollama integration guide describe local-running options. Neither the project account nor these sources establish which computer StudyBuddy used or a minimum hardware specification for this particular setup.

- Daily Study Planner: Allows you to schedule your study plan before the test or examination everyday, total 63 days in one notebook. Table 2 shows the details of how to use it.
- Kokuyo Original Base Paper: Making sure you have a comfortable and satisfying writing experience, and it's acid-free and resistant to bleeding, which is suitable for long-term storage.
- Wireless Binding: Solidifies your back with glue instead of thread, so it can be opened flat and not easy to fall apart. This makes every page easy to write and read.
- Tearing Resistant: The spine cloth is made with a special film laminated to the surface of the paper so it is resistant to tearing and abrasion.
- Unique Design: The cover is made with a shiny varnish, and inner paper desined with item columns are filled in the same color of the cover. It's dark gray ruled lines that doesn't interfere with writing.
What “local” means for privacy and access
Naushad presents local inference as a way to keep Laiba’s study habits and chats on her own machine, avoid per-request cloud API charges, and continue without campus internet. That is the author’s intended architecture and rationale. Running a model locally can reduce reliance on a cloud inference service, but it does not by itself establish that every part of an application is private.
The project account does not document a security audit, network monitoring, a retention policy, or deployment configuration. It therefore cannot establish that no data leaves the device or how all stored data is protected. Those questions depend on the complete app and its configuration, not only on where the model runs.

The practical trade-offs of running Gemma locally
- Less dependence on a cloud inference API: prompts can be handled by a locally running model rather than sent to a hosted inference endpoint, subject to how the rest of the app is configured.
- Hardware matters: local inference uses the computer running the model. The project post supplies no hardware details, so its performance cannot be generalized to a particular laptop.
- Model loading affects responsiveness: the author says keeping the model loaded was intended to reduce cold-start delays; this can also mean the model remains resident while the study session is active.
- Quantization involves a quality trade-off: Google’s Ollama guide explains that quantization can reduce resource requirements, with a potential reduction in output quality. No project-specific comparison or benchmark is reported.
- Offline use has limits: local model inference can avoid a cloud model request, but internet independence for the whole application depends on whether its other dependencies and services are also local.
Laiba’s reaction—and what it does not prove
Naushad attributes this response to Laiba after she saw the app: “It feels like someone is holding my hand while I do my DSA problems.” It captures the personal experience the project aimed for, but it is an anecdotal reaction, not a measured result or clinical endorsement.
Google describes Gemma as a general-purpose model foundation and says developers are responsible for safe use in their applications in its intended-use statement. A motivational companion may help make a study session feel more supported, but the project account does not show that StudyBuddy prevents or treats burnout.
