A 2021 study detected chemical signals in blood samples from pregnant women and newborns, including 55 compounds the researchers tentatively identified as not previously reported in the literature. That does not mean all 55 were chemically confirmed—or that the study showed they harm babies. It was a small proof-of-concept screening study, not a health-effects investigation.
What the researchers did
Wang and colleagues analyzed 30 matched pairs of maternal and umbilical-cord serum from San Francisco: 60 samples in total. Using liquid chromatography–quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF/MS), they screened against a database of approximately 3,500 industrial chemicals. The work was designed to test a method for finding and prioritizing chemicals, rather than to represent all pregnant people or newborns.

The team matched detected chemical features against databases, then used fragmentation analysis to investigate selected suspects. They tentatively identified 73 suspects. Analytical standards—reference materials used to check a substance’s identity—confirmed 17 chemical features representing 15 unique compounds. The paper reports that another 55 compounds were tentatively identified as not previously reported in the literature. Those figures describe distinct stages and categories in the analysis; the 55 were not all confirmed against standards.
The paper is “Suspect Screening, Prioritization, and Confirmation of Environmental Chemicals in Maternal-Newborn Pairs from San Francisco,” published in Environmental Science & Technology in 2021. UCSF also summarized the findings in its March 16, 2021 account.

What “previously unreported” means
The headline count is a literature-comparison result, not proof that the chemicals had never been in a person before. The researchers’ wording was “tentatively identified” and “not previously reported in the literature.” A tentative identification is a plausible match based on chemical-library and fragmentation evidence; a reference standard is needed to confirm a compound’s identity more firmly. The count should therefore not be read as 55 newly confirmed chemicals or as evidence that each was newly introduced into people.
The study gives examples among the 55, including the plasticizer Sumilizer GA 80 and two PFAS compounds: methyl perfluoroundecanoate and 2-perfluorooctyl ethanoic acid. It also notes a high-production-volume chemical used in consumer products such as fragrances. These examples do not establish which product, if any, was the source of a participant’s exposure.

What is known about the chemicals’ uses
Many suspects were poorly characterized. The paper discusses 42 compounds with limited or no source/use information before excluding compounds previously reported in human-exposure studies. UCSF’s summary, using its own description of the findings, says 37 of the 55 had little to no information about sources or uses. These are different groupings and should not be treated as interchangeable counts.

Its category counts were 40 plasticizers, 28 used in cosmetics, 25 in consumer products, 29 pharmaceuticals, 23 pesticides and three flame retardants. Categories can overlap, and a chemical may have other uses; these totals are not mutually exclusive counts of separate substances.

Knowing a possible or established use is not the same as knowing how a particular person encountered a chemical. The study did not identify an individual participant’s exposure route or source.
Does the study show harm to babies?
No. The researchers measured chemical signals in maternal and cord serum; they did not test whether those chemicals caused illness, affected development or produced any other health outcome. Finding a chemical in cord serum does not, by itself, establish harm. The paper calls for further investigation of sources and possible health effects, which reflects an unanswered research question—not a demonstrated effect.

The study’s small San Francisco sample and proof-of-concept design also do not establish how common these findings are in a broader population. Its contribution is showing how suspect-screening methods can flag chemicals for closer identification and study.

Reference standards help researchers confirm a suspected chemical’s identity and assess it more reliably. The study’s co-lead author Dimitri Panagopoulos Abrahamsson said that manufacturers need to provide analytical standards so researchers can confirm chemicals’ presence and evaluate toxicity. Tracey J. Woodruff, a UCSF professor, noted that improved technology can identify chemicals that may have been present in people for some time. The method can expand detection, but identification, knowledge of a source and evaluation of health effects are separate steps.

The practical takeaway is about the state of chemical monitoring: a screening result can reveal candidates that deserve follow-up, while leaving identity, exposure source and health significance unresolved. This study did not test a household product or intervention, so it does not establish that buying a filter, test kit or other consumer item would address its findings.
