Stuck in Airplane Mode in Windows 11? How to Turn It Off

A practical Windows 11 sequence for an Airplane mode toggle that will not switch off—or Wi-Fi that remains unavailable after it does.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Airplane mode will not switch off in Windows 11, check it in both Quick Settings and Settings first. If it switches off but Wi-Fi is still unavailable, troubleshoot the Wi-Fi adapter and its driver instead: the toggle and the wireless hardware are separate parts of the problem.

Turn Airplane mode off in both places

  1. Open Quick Settings by selecting the network, sound, or battery area at the right of the taskbar, then select Airplane mode to turn it off.
  2. Open Settings > Network & internet > Airplane mode and check that Airplane mode is off there too.

Airplane mode disables wireless communications, including Wi-Fi, cellular, Bluetooth, and NFC. Windows remembers the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth states from before Airplane mode was enabled, so switching Airplane mode off does not necessarily mean Wi-Fi will be available or connected. See Microsoft’s Essential Network Settings and Tasks in Windows.

Run the Windows network troubleshooter

For Windows 11, Microsoft recommends starting Wi-Fi troubleshooting with the automated Network and Internet troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Open Get Help, search for network or internet troubleshooting, and run the Network and Internet troubleshooter. It can diagnose common problems and attempt fixes. The exact screens may vary as Get Help changes.

Follow Microsoft’s Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting steps if you need the broader sequence.

Check that Windows detects and enables the wireless adapter

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Network adapters and look for the PC’s wireless or Wi-Fi adapter.
  3. If it appears disabled, right-click it and choose Enable device, if that option is available.

If no wireless adapter appears in Device Manager, Windows is not detecting it. A settings toggle alone cannot make an undetected adapter work. Microsoft explains how to locate a wireless adapter in Setting up a wireless network in Windows.

Check the Wi-Fi driver before removing it

Check Windows Update and the PC manufacturer’s support page for a wireless driver intended for your exact computer model. If you are considering uninstalling the adapter driver, first download and keep the manufacturer’s driver installer if possible. After a restart, Windows may detect and reinstall the adapter; if it does not, use the saved installer. Microsoft’s current Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide covers adapter and driver recovery.

Determine whether the problem is the PC or the network

  • Try the same Wi-Fi network with another device. If that device also cannot connect, the router or internet service may be involved.
  • If available, connect the affected PC to a network with Ethernet. A working wired connection can help isolate a Wi-Fi-specific problem; Microsoft includes Ethernet as a troubleshooting option in its Wi-Fi guidance.

If your laptop has no Ethernet port, a USB Ethernet adapter may let you perform that check or use a wired connection temporarily, provided it is compatible with the PC. It does not turn Airplane mode off or repair the wireless adapter.

Use Network reset only after simpler checks

Network reset is a broader step, not just another way to toggle Airplane mode. It removes installed network adapters and their settings, then reinstalls the adapters with default settings after the PC restarts. You may need to reinstall or reconfigure VPN software or Hyper-V virtual switches afterward.

Try it only after checking the Airplane mode controls, running the troubleshooter, and examining adapter detection and drivers. Microsoft describes its effects and troubleshooting role in Fix Ethernet connection problems in Windows.
