1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsI found Stripe’s email saying my webhook was broken 17 days after it arrived. That delay is my experience, not evidence that Stripe normally waits 17 days to send an alert. Stripe’s documentation does explain what can happen when an endpoint fails: delivery attempts are retried, and an endpoint that remains unresponsive or returns errors for several days can have delivery stopped and be disabled. Here’s how to check what failed, what the Dashboard can show, and what to do about events you may have missed.
Why did Stripe say my webhook was broken?
A webhook endpoint is a URL configured to receive selected notifications when events occur in a Stripe account. Stripe sends an event to that endpoint, and your application is responsible for receiving it and doing the relevant work. A payment appearing successful does not, by itself, establish that your webhook handler also completed its work; check the delivery and your application’s downstream records separately. Stripe’s Webhook Endpoints API reference describes configured endpoints, while Stripe Support explains why it retries endpoint deliveries.

Stripe says it automatically retries failed webhook deliveries. If an endpoint remains unresponsive or returns errors for several days, Stripe can stop delivery attempts and disable the endpoint in the webhook configuration. Stripe’s support explanation does not establish a precise retry schedule, and the fact that an endpoint was reported as broken does not reveal which failure occurred in a particular incident. The delivery attempt’s response details are the useful evidence.
How do I see failed Stripe webhook deliveries?
- In the Stripe Dashboard, open Webhooks.
- Select the affected endpoint and switch to the Failed view.
- Open an event that failed, then expand its delivery attempt.
- Check the HTTP status and response. Use those details to distinguish a timeout from an HTTP error or another endpoint problem, and compare them with your server and application logs for the same event.
These are Stripe’s documented steps for investigating delivery issues. A failed attempt gives you a concrete starting point; it does not alone prove whether your application performed any work before the connection failed. Stripe’s troubleshooting guide covers the Dashboard investigation.

Can Stripe disable a webhook endpoint?
Yes. Stripe says that after an endpoint remains unresponsive or returns errors for several days, it can stop attempting delivery and disable that endpoint in the webhook configuration. Don’t assume that retries will continue indefinitely. Check the endpoint’s current status in the Dashboard, and after correcting the underlying issue, confirm that the endpoint is enabled and delivering events successfully.
What does a timeout mean, and how can I prevent it?
A timeout means Stripe did not receive a timely response indicating that the event was received. Stripe’s guidance is to return a successful 2xx HTTP response promptly. As Stripe puts it: “Stripe expects your server to promptly respond with an HTTP status code in the 200-299 range to indicate that the Event was successfully received.” — Stripe Support, “Webhooks: how to investigate and fix ‘Timed out’”.

If processing an event takes longer than a quick acknowledgement, separate receipt from the longer-running work: validate and record the event, put it on an internal queue, return 2xx, and let a worker process it. This reduces the chance that slow downstream work keeps the HTTP request open long enough to time out. A prompt 2xx only confirms receipt to Stripe; your own queue and worker still need monitoring so processing failures are visible.

How do I recover events after a webhook failure?
First determine which events failed and whether your application already processed them. Use the Failed view and delivery-attempt details, then reconcile against your own records before repeating work. That helps avoid treating an uncertain delivery as proof that a payment or other business action was lost—or repeating an action that already happened.

Stripe’s event history has different visibility windows depending on where you look:
| Where | Window and detail |
|---|---|
| API and Dashboard | Events from the last 30 days are fully visible through both, according to Stripe’s support page. |
| Live-mode Dashboard | Events are accessible for 13 months; events older than 30 days have summary view. |
| Test-mode Dashboard | Events are accessible for 90 days; events older than 30 days have summary view. |
| Events API retrieval | Individual events are available for retrieval for 30 days, according to the Events API reference. |
The windows above are the ones stated in Stripe’s accessed support and API documentation; the support page does not state a publication year. API retrieval of an event is not the same as recovery of every failed webhook delivery, and event visibility does not mean an old event is automatically replayed. Investigate promptly, preserve the event identifiers and attempt details you need, and use Stripe’s documented Dashboard controls and your own reconciliation process to decide what must be processed again. Do not assume a 17-day-old event is already lost: it falls within the stated 30-day API and full-visibility period, but you still need to verify the specific event and delivery state.

What I’d change after missing the email
- Watch the webhook endpoint’s delivery status rather than relying on an email alone.
- Alert the people responsible when failed deliveries appear or the endpoint becomes disabled.
- Keep the handler’s acknowledgement fast; move lengthy work to a queue and monitor the worker separately.
- Reconcile critical downstream records against Stripe events so a delivery failure can be found even if an alert is overlooked.
- Investigate failures while event details are still within their applicable visibility and retrieval windows.
These are operational practices based on the failure modes and visibility limits Stripe documents; the documentation does not prescribe a particular alerting product or prove that an alerting system would have prevented my 17-day delay.
