OBS Studio is free, open-source software for video recording and live streaming. It can capture display or window content, webcams, and other sources; combine them in scenes; and apply audio mixing, filters, transitions, hotkeys, Studio Mode, and extensions. What setup and rehearsal involve
Preparing OBS
- Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard. It considers intended use, computer resources, and—if streaming—network conditions.
- Add the sources the lesson needs, such as a display or window, webcam, and audio devices. Arrange and test the scenes you will use to move between slides, demonstrations, and camera.
- Review output settings for the planned session, then make a short test recording or stream. OBS strongly encourages testing before a real session.
- Rehearse the actual lesson flow and watch the test back for legible screen content, balanced audio, and unwanted desktop notifications or windows.

Preparing StreamYard
- Check browser permissions for the camera and microphone, select the intended audio devices, and test the network in the browser you will use for class.
- Test screen or slide sharing and any guest connection. Give guests clear joining instructions and time to check their camera and microphone.
- Confirm the recording settings and the route attendees will use, including registration and the webinar page if using On-Air.
StreamYard’s browser workflow reduces installation steps for participants, but it does not remove the need to test the host’s browser, network, slides, guests, and attendee access. StreamYard First Steps

Rehearse the learner’s experience
For either tool, run through screen transitions, audio levels, guest handoffs, recording, and the view a learner gets when joining late. Keep the slide deck and session link accessible to the instructor, and prepare a backup way to communicate with attendees. The choice of software alone does not guarantee a successful class.

For a fair cost comparison, count the actual plan needed for your attendee total and recording requirements rather than comparing a temporary offer with an assumed long-term price.

Common problems and practical fixes
- OBS video stutters or the computer struggles: A compatible system is not necessarily capable of the selected resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene load. Rehearse those exact settings before class; simplify the production or adjust the output if the test fails.
- A guest cannot be heard or seen in StreamYard: Check browser camera and microphone permissions, the selected devices, and the guest’s joining instructions. Test the same browser and network planned for the session.
- Attendees cannot access the webinar: Test the registration and attendee route yourself, including the embedded player if used. Confirm that your plan’s viewer limit suits the expected audience.
- A recording or replay is unavailable or shorter than expected: Check whether the selected StreamYard plan includes the recording feature and applicable cap, and whether on-demand viewing was enabled for the On-Air webinar.
- A paid webinar has no payment step: On-Air does not process admission payments. Use a separate payment and access-control arrangement, then test how paid attendees receive the viewing link.
