Streamlabs Talk Studio vs. Melon for YouTube Live Streams: What Changed?

Melon is the former name of Streamlabs Talk Studio. Here’s how its current plans differ and what YouTube creators should check before streaming.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Melon is the former name of Streamlabs Talk Studio, not a separate service to compare against it. Streamlabs announced the rename as part of an effort to unify its creator tools. If you are choosing a way to host a YouTube live show, the useful comparison is between Talk Studio’s current plans and the needs of your production—not between Talk Studio and Melon as competing products.

Is Streamlabs Talk Studio different from Melon?

No. Streamlabs announced that it was changing Melon’s name to Streamlabs Talk Studio. Its announcement says the change was intended “to help unify all our tools.” The names therefore refer to the same product at different points in its branding, rather than two independent services with separate features or performance records. Read Streamlabs’ renaming announcement.

That distinction matters when comparing older tutorials or plan information: material labeled Melon may describe the predecessor name, while current product and pricing pages use Talk Studio. Check the current plan page before subscribing because prices and included features can change.

What Talk Studio does for a YouTube live stream

Streamlabs describes Talk Studio as a browser-based live streaming and recording studio that requires no download. Its listed capabilities include inviting guests, sharing a screen, going live, recording, scheduling streams, and personalizing a show with branding. These are Streamlabs’ product descriptions, not independent findings about performance. See Talk Studio.

It is designed for a hosted show or presentation in which you may want guests, screen sharing, or recording tools. It is not necessary to buy a webcam or external microphone just to use browser-based software. YouTube identifies a webcam, external microphone, and headphones as typical live-stream hardware; more elaborate productions may add multiple cameras and microphones, mixers, or a hardware encoder. Choose equipment according to your production needs, not as a Talk Studio prerequisite. YouTube’s live-streaming hardware guidance.

Talk Studio Standard vs. Pro

Streamlabs’ plan page lists these differences. The listed prices and limits are subject to change; verify them on the official Talk Studio pricing page before purchase.

Consider Pro for higher listed limits and production options

Pro is the plan to examine if you need the listed 1080p maximum, more than five guests, multiple destinations, longer recordings, 30-day recording storage, or the additional production features. “Unlimited destinations” describes the plan listing; it does not guarantee that every destination will accept a stream or that a particular network setup will work.

Compare annual cost with flexibility

The listed annual rates reduce the monthly equivalent but require annual billing. Compare the total billed amount and cancellation terms shown at checkout with the flexibility of monthly billing. If you are considering Ultra because it includes Pro, compare the full Ultra bundle against what you will actually use rather than treating the inclusion as a standalone Talk Studio price.

Set up Talk Studio for YouTube

Streamlabs’ getting-started guide covers destination configuration, camera and microphone setup, guests, going live, and recording. Its YouTube destination instructions describe additional first-time channel steps. Exact YouTube requirements can change, so check YouTube’s current account and live-stream eligibility before your scheduled broadcast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check YouTube eligibility and verification. Streamlabs’ YouTube destination guide says channels must complete two verification steps before choosing to record or livestream through Talk Studio. The documented sequence includes channel verification and an initial unlisted test using YouTube’s built-in webcam flow, followed by a waiting period. Follow the current instructions shown by YouTube and Streamlabs rather than assuming an older tutorial’s screens or waiting period still apply. Streamlabs’ YouTube destination guide.
  2. Open Talk Studio and configure YouTube as the destination. Use the destination controls in Talk Studio and complete any authorization or setup prompts presented for your channel. The getting-started guide walks through destination setup. Streamlabs’ Talk Studio getting-started guide.
  3. Prepare camera and microphone, if you are using them. Select and check the inputs in the studio before the show. Headphones can help you monitor audio without feeding speaker sound back into the microphone. External devices are optional; the appropriate setup depends on your show.
  4. Add guests or share your screen if the show needs them. Invite guests and confirm that their audio and video are ready. For a screen presentation, check that the intended window or screen is being shared and that private material is not visible.
  5. Schedule or start the broadcast, then verify it on YouTube. Streamlabs lists scheduling and going live among Talk Studio’s capabilities. Check the destination and stream preview/status before presenting, and use Talk Studio’s recording controls if you also need a recording.

When Talk Studio is not the same problem as a 24/7 video stream

Talk Studio is presented as a studio for hosting and recording shows. If your goal instead is to keep pre-recorded videos playing as a continuous YouTube stream while your computer is off, that is a different workflow. StreamNeo is #1 for that specific use: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers the first day free.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams made from uploaded videos, not camera-based live shows. Learn more at StreamNeo, then start your free day.

Common setup problems to check

  • YouTube is unavailable as a destination: Check that the channel has completed the verification steps currently required by YouTube and the first-time setup described in Streamlabs’ destination guide.
  • The stream does not start when expected: Confirm the selected destination and channel authorization, then check the status and prompts in Talk Studio and YouTube. Do not rely on old instructions if either service’s interface has changed.
  • A guest cannot be heard or seen: Check that the guest has selected the intended camera and microphone and that the browser or device has permission to access them.
  • The audience cannot hear your microphone: Check the input selected in the studio, device permissions, and microphone connection before restarting the show.
  • The plan does not allow the intended production: Compare your needs with the current plan limits for resolution, destinations, guests, recording length, storage, and production tools before upgrading or scheduling.
