For a more reliable 24/7 YouTube stream, choose a resolution and frame rate your computer can encode continuously, set a bitrate your upload connection can sustain with at least 20% headroom, and match YouTube’s ingest requirements. There is no Streamlabs Desktop preset that guarantees an uninterrupted day-long broadcast: test the complete setup, monitor YouTube Live Control Room, and make a local recording if you need the full archive.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for sustained operation
Prioritize a stable output over maximum image quality. YouTube advises choosing a quality that is reliable for your internet connection and testing your upload speed. Its bitrate figures are ingest recommendations, not proof that your computer or connection can sustain a stream indefinitely.
For H.264, YouTube’s recommended video bitrates are:
| Output | Recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
These figures are from YouTube Help’s encoder settings. The page also provides separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265; use the row for the codec Streamlabs actually sends rather than carrying over an H.264 number. A lower resolution or frame rate can be the better choice if it gives your encoder and connection more margin.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Leave upload capacity in reserve
Measure upload speed under conditions similar to the actual broadcast, including the hours and network other people or devices will be using. YouTube recommends upload capacity at least 20% above the total outgoing bitrate. Count both primary and backup outputs if you send two streams. Shared networks can leave less bandwidth available to your computer than a speed test suggests, and disruptions can break a live stream. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
As a practical check, add the video and audio bitrates, then reserve the additional headroom rather than setting your stream at the edge of measured capacity. If the connection varies, reduce the target bitrate or output quality before going live.

Match YouTube’s encoder settings
In Streamlabs Desktop, check the output settings against YouTube’s current ingest guidance. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval (never more than 4 seconds), an accepted video codec such as H.264, H.265, or AV1 where supported, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the connection protocol. Its advanced guidance specifies 128 kbps for stereo audio and a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate. Confirm the options Streamlabs actually exposes and sends; available codecs can depend on the computer and encoder.
Choose an encoder your computer can sustain
Streamlabs notes that x264 encodes on the CPU, while hardware encoders such as NVENC use the GPU. Neither choice fixes a weak internet connection, and hardware encoding is not available on every system. Pick the encoder that leaves adequate headroom on your machine during the actual workload: scenes, overlays, filters, and other running applications can affect performance.

There is no universal CPU or GPU threshold for a stable 24/7 stream. Streamlabs’ setup guidance says settings vary by platform and recommends testing the chosen setup. Watch system load during a representative test rather than assuming a setting is safe because it works briefly.
Use Dynamic Bitrate as a fallback
In Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings > Advanced and enable “Dynamically change bitrate when dropping frames while streaming.” Set a sensible target bitrate first. Streamlabs says the feature lowers bitrate when network problems cause dropped frames, then gradually moves back toward the target as conditions improve.

Dynamic Bitrate can respond to network variation, but it cannot create upload capacity or protect against a computer crash, power failure, encoder fault, or YouTube-side outage. Treat it as a mitigation, not a guarantee.
Test the full setup before relying on it
- Prepare the YouTube event and encoder in advance. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder early and starting it before the scheduled event so you can check the preview.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Include representative audio and movement rather than testing only a static screen. Verify picture, sound, and motion in the Live Control Room preview and on the watch page.
- Check capacity and system load. Confirm the stream’s total upload use fits within sustained available bandwidth with the recommended 20% margin. Observe CPU or GPU load while the real scenes and sources are active.
- Check stream health and messages. YouTube Live Control Room displays stream health and specific error messages. Address warnings before treating the setup as ready for a long run.
- Verify recording and recovery plans. If recording locally, check that the file is growing and valid, and ensure there is enough free storage. Have a plan to restore the stream after a failure; do not assume reconnect behavior until it has been tested on your installation.
Will YouTube save a 24/7 live stream?
Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for a stream longer than 12 hours. YouTube says it may not capture streams exceeding 12 hours and recommends a local archive backup. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance and DVR guidance.

If the entire broadcast matters, record locally and plan storage for the bitrate and duration you intend to retain. Check free space and file integrity during operation; a recording that stops when the disk fills is not a complete backup.
Troubleshooting common stability problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or unstable stream health | Upload capacity or network variation | Check Live Control Room messages, retest upload under realistic conditions, lower bitrate or output quality, and retain headroom. Dynamic Bitrate may reduce bitrate during network trouble. |
| Encoding lag or overloaded system | CPU/GPU load or demanding scenes | Observe system load during the actual scene setup. Reduce output demands or choose an encoder the system can sustain; test again before relying on it. |
| Stream does not appear as expected | Encoder output or ingest compatibility | Check the Live Control Room preview and health messages. Verify codec, CBR, keyframe interval, audio format, and RTMPS settings against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. |
| Local recording is missing, stops, or is incomplete | Recording configuration or storage capacity | Confirm recording is enabled, the file is growing and valid, and the destination has enough free space for the planned duration. |
| Broadcast or recording is interrupted by a device or power failure | Local computer, power, or encoder fault | Dynamic Bitrate does not address these failures. Plan how to restore the stream and preserve a local archive, and test that recovery procedure on the installation. |
