Use Streamlabs Desktop’s Highlighter to capture moments with a hotkey, then trim and arrange the saved clips into a highlight reel, preview it, and export the finished video for social media. Streamlabs’ newer materials call Highlighter “Replay,” so you may see that name in current guides.
Before you start: Highlighter is now called Replay
Streamlabs’ Highlighter landing page still uses “Streamlabs Desktop Highlighter,” while its newer Replay guide says Streamlabs Highlighter is now Replay. The guides also differ on operating-system support: the product page lists Windows 10+ and macOS 12+, while the Replay guide, last updated September 22, 2026, says Replay is currently supported only on Windows. Check the current Streamlabs Highlighter page and the download information for your version before relying on a platform requirement.

The product page describes Highlighter as free and built into Streamlabs Desktop. The workflow below follows the Highlighter guide; where newer Replay guidance describes additional options, they are identified as Replay features rather than assumed to be available in every version.
Capture clips during your session
- In Streamlabs Desktop, open the Highlighter tab.
- Set a hotkey and choose the replay duration. The duration determines how much recent gameplay or stream footage the capture includes.
- Go live, or record as appropriate for your workflow. When a moment worth keeping happens, press the configured hotkey.
- After the session, return to Highlighter to review the saved clips. Streamlabs’ newer Replay guide also describes importing clips and other recording workflows; availability can depend on the version you use.
Choose a replay duration that gives the moment enough context without capturing more footage than you need to sort through. If a clip misses the action, adjust the duration or hotkey setup before the next session.

Edit and arrange the highlight reel
Trim each clip
Drag a clip’s edges to remove dead time before or after the moment. Keep enough lead-in for viewers to understand what is happening, then end the clip once the payoff is clear.
Put clips in a useful order
Reorder clips to make the reel feel intentional. You might group related moments or build toward a standout finish. Enable or disable clips to include or exclude them without deleting, and delete clips that do not belong in the final reel.

Add transitions and finishing touches
Add transitions between clips and choose the transition type and length. Streamlabs’ guide also documents adding an intro or outro and background music. Use these sparingly enough that the moments remain easy to follow.

Play through the reel to check the trims, sequence, transitions, and audio. Make adjustments if a cut feels abrupt or a clip no longer makes sense in its new position.

Choose clips with a clear moment
Streamlabs suggests looking for energetic moments, community participation, and unexpected events when choosing clips for social media. Treat these as creative prompts, not a guarantee of reach or engagement; the available guidance does not establish that any clip type will perform better by a measured amount.
As you review, ask whether each clip has an understandable setup and payoff when watched on its own. A short, clear moment can be easier to share than a segment that depends on a long stretch of context.

Export the reel and upload it
- When the preview is ready, select Export and choose the available export settings that suit your intended upload.
- Export the finished video. Streamlabs’ Highlighter guide describes downloading the video and uploading it to your preferred social channels.
- Streamlabs’ newer Replay guide lists export destinations including a computer, YouTube, Discord, or phone. Those routes are documented for Replay; do not assume every destination appears in every product version.
- Upload the exported file to the social platform you have chosen, using that platform’s current upload options.
Streamlabs’ Highlighter guide (published October 17, 2025) gives the instruction: “Once you are happy with any edits to your clips, click the Export button and choose you desired export settings.”
