To install a Streamlabs Chatbot script, use the Windows desktop Chatbot app, set its Scripts tab to the Python Lib folder required by your Chatbot version, then import a trusted script as a ZIP. Scripts are not preloaded. Streamlabs’ documented setup is a legacy Python 2.7.13 workflow, so check the requirements for your exact app version before installing that runtime.
Check that you have the right Streamlabs app
These instructions are for Streamlabs Desktop Chatbot, not Streamlabs Cloudbot. Desktop Chatbot is Windows-only; Streamlabs points Linux and Mac users toward Cloudbot, a separate online product with its own setup and feature set. Set up the documented Python runtime
Streamlabs’ script-specific support article, originally published August 5, 2020 and reported updated April 25, 2025, documents Python 2.7.13 for Desktop Chatbot. Its support repository further specifies Python 2.7.13 x86 and warns that newer Python versions or 64-bit Python can cause errors in this application. This is application-specific legacy guidance, not a recommendation to use Python 2.7 for general programming. Check your Chatbot version’s requirements before installing runtime software.

- In Chatbot, open the Scripts tab and its settings. Set the Python path to the runtime’s
Libdirectory. The default example isC:Python27Lib, but your installation location may differ. - Use the folder named
Lib, notLibs, then save the setting and reload scripts if that control is available in your version.
Streamlabs’ support article and support repository describe the path and troubleshooting; its Python scripting PDF also covers selecting the Lib folder, saving, and reloading.

Make the Scripts tab appear
If the Scripts tab is missing, open Connections and connect or reconnect both the bot account and streamer account to the streamer’s channel. Streamlabs lists those connections as a prerequisite for the tab to show.
Import a script ZIP
- Obtain a Chatbot script packaged as a ZIP from a source you trust. Streamlabs suggests its Chatbot Discord or someone you know well; that does not guarantee every community file is safe.
- Open the bot’s Scripts tab.
- Select Import in the upper-right corner, choose the ZIP file, and open it.
- Wait briefly for the script to appear in the Scripts view. Streamlabs says that if it does not appear, setup may be incomplete or the script may be broken.
There are no default scripts to activate: scripts must be imported manually. See Streamlabs’ Chatbot Scripts [Desktop Chatbot] article and support repository.

Enable and use the imported script
After import, select the script in the Scripts view and follow the instructions and controls supplied with that specific script. There is no universal setup sequence established for every third-party script, so do not assume a particular checkbox, command, or configuration applies to all of them. If it fails, use the error view and troubleshooting checks below rather than treating a successful import as proof that the script works.

Chatbot scripts can access files on the computer, according to the community scripting documentation. Only run scripts you trust. Where possible, check the author, inspect the code, review requested permissions, and look at the update history. Streamlabs’ recommendation to use a known source is not a safety verification of an individual ZIP.

Some scripts or connected clients may ask for Chatbot API access. The scripting documentation says right-clicking a script can insert an API key by creating a small .js file in the script folder for access to Chatbot’s websocket server. Treat that key like a password: do not publish or share it. If you refresh the key, the documentation says each relevant client.js file must be updated. Only do this when the particular script or client requires it. See the official scripting PDF and community scripting documentation.
Troubleshoot scripts that do not appear or load
- Scripts tab is absent: In Connections, connect the bot and streamer accounts to the streamer’s channel.
- Import finishes but the script is missing: Wait briefly, then check whether setup is incomplete or the script itself is broken. Re-importing cannot fix invalid script code.
- Errors mention “No module named os” or “No module named json,” or show unexpected tokens: Verify the Python version and architecture required by your Chatbot version and confirm the configured directory is
Lib, notLibs. Streamlabs’ repository lists these as examples for checking Python setup, not guaranteed fixes. - The path looks right but errors continue: Verify the actual Python installation location, save the setting, reload scripts, and inspect the Scripts error view. If only one script fails after the runtime checks, it may be broken or incompatible.
The Streamlabs support repository identifies the Scripts error view as a primary troubleshooting aid; the official scripting PDF also describes script errors and reloads.
