To use a virtual background while streaming, run a background effect on your camera and send the processed camera to your streaming software. A documented setup is NVIDIA Broadcast feeding its virtual camera into OBS Studio or Streamlabs Desktop. It requires Windows and a supported NVIDIA RTX GPU; OBS also offers a built-in chroma-key filter for a physical green screen.
How virtual backgrounds reach your stream
There are two common approaches: process the camera in a separate app and select its virtual camera in your streaming software, or apply a filter inside the streaming app. NVIDIA Broadcast uses the first approach: it applies an effect to the webcam and exposes the result as a camera device that OBS or Streamlabs can capture. OBS’s chroma-key filter is an in-app alternative when you have a green screen.
These methods are not interchangeable in their requirements. NVIDIA Broadcast is Windows-only and requires supported NVIDIA RTX hardware. OBS runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux/Unix, but a computer meeting its basic compatibility requirements is not necessarily powerful enough for a demanding stream.
Option 1: NVIDIA Broadcast with OBS Studio or Streamlabs
Check whether your computer qualifies
NVIDIA’s FAQ, accessed in 2026, lists GeForce RTX 2060, Quadro RTX 3000, TITAN RTX, or higher; 8 GB of RAM; driver 570.xx or higher; and an Intel Core i5 8600 or Ryzen 5 2600 or higher as recommended CPU guidance. NVIDIA says Virtual Key Light and Studio Voice require a higher-end RTX 3060 desktop GPU. Check NVIDIA’s current FAQ before installing because supported hardware and software requirements can change.

NVIDIA describes Broadcast as a Windows 10 64-bit application that applies AI effects to microphone, speaker, or webcam input and exposes virtual devices to other apps. The product page identified version 2.2.1 and driver R570 or higher; treat version and driver details as subject to change.
Set up the virtual camera
- Install NVIDIA Broadcast from NVIDIA’s product page and open its camera controls.
- Select your physical webcam as the camera input, then choose the available background effect, such as blur or replacement. Configure the effect in Broadcast before opening the receiving scene.
- In OBS Studio, add a Video Capture Source to the scene and choose Camera (NVIDIA Broadcast) as the device. The processed image should appear in the source preview.
- In Streamlabs Desktop, add a Video Capture Device and choose NVIDIA Broadcast. Match the camera resolution in Streamlabs Desktop and NVIDIA Broadcast; NVIDIA’s setup guidance warns that mismatched resolution can prevent correct display.
- Position and size the camera source in your scene, then check the stream preview and audio separately before going live.
NVIDIA’s setup instructions cover the Broadcast-to-streaming-app workflow and note that Stream Deck users can assign keyboard shortcuts as a convenience; a Stream Deck is not required. See NVIDIA’s setup guide.

Option 2: OBS chroma key with a green screen
If you do not have a supported RTX GPU, OBS’s chroma-key filter can remove a solid-colored background from a camera image. This is not the same as AI segmentation: it depends on a physical, evenly lit green screen and careful framing.
- Position a green screen behind you and light it as evenly as practical, keeping its color off your face and clothing where possible.
- In OBS, add your webcam as a Video Capture Device source and place it in the scene.
- Right-click the camera source, open Filters, add a Chroma Key effect filter, and select green as the key color.
- Adjust similarity, smoothness, and spill reduction while watching the preview. The right values depend on the lighting, camera, and screen; inspect hair edges and moving objects rather than relying on a universal preset.
- Add an image, video, or scene layer beneath the camera source to show through the removed background. Test movement and lighting changes before streaming.
A green screen is optional for chroma keying, not a requirement for NVIDIA Broadcast’s AI background effects. Neither the webcam nor a green screen has a universally best model established by the available vendor guidance.

Performance: test the complete scene
Background segmentation, game rendering, encoding, overlays, and capture sources all compete for system resources. NVIDIA has documented that Broadcast can affect game performance when gaming and streaming concurrently, but that guidance does not establish a universal frame-rate cost. Test your own game, scene, and output settings rather than assuming the effect will be free or that one setup is always faster.

- Run a private or unlisted test with the same camera, effect, scene sources, encoder, resolution, and frame rate you intend to use.
- Check both the stream preview and local game or application responsiveness. Simplify the scene or reduce demanding settings if the stream becomes unstable.
- If the stream is the priority, lower game graphics demands or scene complexity before assuming the background app is the only cause.
OBS likewise cautions that satisfying basic system requirements does not ensure that a computer can stream or record: requirements depend on encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.

- NVIDIA Broadcast is not listed as a camera: confirm Broadcast is open and its camera input is selected, then reopen or reload the camera source in OBS or Streamlabs. NVIDIA’s troubleshooting material addresses virtual-device visibility.
- The source is gray or blank: verify that the physical camera works in Broadcast, confirm the receiving app selected the NVIDIA Broadcast device rather than another camera, and reload the camera source after changing Broadcast settings where applicable.
- Streamlabs shows an incorrect image or no image: set matching camera resolutions in Streamlabs Desktop and Broadcast, then reload the capture device.
- OBS virtual camera problems on macOS: follow OBS’s operating-system-specific troubleshooting; its documentation includes a system-software permission issue. Do not apply Windows NVIDIA device steps to a Mac.
- Game performance drops: test the full streaming scene and reduce competing game or scene demands as needed. There is no single FPS penalty that applies to all systems.

Copyright and channel-policy checks still matter
A virtual background changes the camera image; it does not grant rights to music, video, images, or other material in a scene. Before streaming, confirm you have permission to use every media asset and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization rules, including its reused-content policy. A looping service does not change those obligations. Use the copyright safety checklist when preparing a prerecorded YouTube stream.
