Streaming Software That Supports Capture Cards: OBS, XSplit and Streamlabs

OBS Studio, XSplit Broadcaster and Streamlabs Desktop support capture-card workflows. Compare platforms, verify your exact card and follow practical setup and troubleshooting steps.

OBS Studio, XSplit Broadcaster and Streamlabs Desktop all support capture cards. OBS is the cross-platform option; XSplit Broadcaster is Windows-only and documents a dual-PC capture-card workflow; Streamlabs provides capture-card setup and troubleshooting guidance. The right choice depends on your operating system, exact card model, video format and computer—not just whether an app lists capture cards as a source.

Which streaming software works with a capture card?

Software Platform information Capture-card support Best fit to consider
OBS Studio Downloads are listed for Windows, Mac and Linux. OBS identifies capture cards as sources that can be added to scenes. It is free and open source. Creators who want a cross-platform, free option and are comfortable configuring scenes.
XSplit Broadcaster Windows-only; its requirements page lists Windows 10/11 64-bit. XSplit documents adding a capture card as a video device, including for a dual-PC streaming setup. Windows users following a documented two-computer workflow.
Streamlabs Desktop Check the current system requirements for your operating system and setup. Streamlabs publishes capture-card setup and troubleshooting guidance, including device selection and source conflicts. Users who want the Streamlabs workflow and device-specific troubleshooting help.

These are supported workflows, not a promise that every card, driver, connection or format works in every configuration. Check the precise model’s current requirements from its manufacturer, then confirm the software and operating system you intend to use.

How to choose software for your capture card

Start with the computer and operating system

OBS lists Windows, Mac and Linux downloads, subject to its current requirements. XSplit Broadcaster is Windows-only. Confirm the application supports the operating system and version on the computer that will run the stream; in a dual-PC setup, that is usually the streaming PC, not necessarily the computer or console supplying the video.

Verify the exact capture-card model

Search the card maker’s current documentation for its supported operating systems, connections, capture formats and setup procedure. OBS also maintains a certified-device list with device, manufacturer, date and supported-platform details. Treat it as a useful compatibility signal, not an exhaustive guarantee: a listed device does not prove that every software version or configuration is suitable, and an unlisted device is not automatically incompatible.

Guermok Video Capture Card, 4K USB3.0 HDMI to USB C, 1080P 60FPS & 2K 30FPS
  • 【1080P 60FPS Video Capture Card】 This HDMI game capture card is based on USB3.0 high speed transmission port, input resolution up to 4K@30HZ, output resolution up to 2K@30Hz or 1920×1080@60Hz. Type c and USB interface can meet most of the devices in daily life. Easily meet the online capture, real-time recording, online meetings, live gaming and other functions, so you have a better visual enjoyment. Note: For capture use only; requires capture software to function and is not intended for direct screen casting to a monitor or TV
  • 【Ultra Low Latency Screen Sharing】 HDMI capture card is made of good quality aluminum alloy with strong heat dissipation, allowing you to enjoy ultra low latency while live gaming or video recording or live streaming, avoiding blue screens and lag. This HDMI to USBC capture card supports easy recording of good quality audio or HD video and transferring it to your computer or streaming platform, allowing you to record 60 fps HD video directly on your hard drive and real-time preview
  • 【Plug and Play, Easy to Carry】 This HDMI 1080P video capture card does not require any additional drivers or external power supply, just plug and play for fast capture. The capture card is small and lightweight, so you can put it in your bag for emergencies, making it very portable for outdoor live streaming. It's also a great way to share content in game recording, video conference, video recorder and online teaching
  • 【Wide Compatibility USB Capture Card】 Easily streams to Facebook, Youtube or Twitch. • 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

For example, the list includes the ASUS TUF Gaming Capture Box CU4K30 and EVGA XR1 Lite. That does not establish that an arbitrary USB HDMI capture card will handle your desired resolution, frame rate, latency or operating system.

Match the intended workload

A working capture-card connection is only one part of a successful stream. Resolution, frame rate, encoder, scene complexity, available computer hardware and upload bandwidth all affect performance. OBS cautions that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream or record your intended workload. XSplit’s requirements and the capture-card maker’s requirements should also be checked for your specific setup.

Check drivers, audio and video paths

Follow the card manufacturer’s instructions for drivers and any required utility software. Driver requirements are not universal: Streamlabs’ guidance covers both device-specific software and generic-driver situations. Also establish how audio reaches the streaming computer—through the card, a separate audio connection or another supported route—before going live.

How to add and test a capture card

  1. Install the streaming application on the streaming computer. Follow the capture-card manufacturer’s current setup and driver instructions on that same computer.
  2. Connect the video source to the card. Connect the console, camera or second computer’s video output to the card’s input, then connect the card to the streaming computer as described in its manual. Ports, supported video formats and audio paths vary by model.
  3. Add the card as a source. In XSplit Broadcaster, use Add Source > Devices > Video, then select the card from the device list. In OBS Studio, add it using the video-capture-source workflow and choose the device; consult the current OBS guide and card documentation for the controls available to your model.
  4. Check that the picture is stable. Confirm the selected device and supported capture format. Set resolution and frame rate only to values supported by the source, card, connection and computer.
  5. Test audio and a short recording or private stream. Confirm that sound is present, in sync and coming from the intended source. Check the result before relying on the setup for a live broadcast.
  6. Set stream output for the whole system. Choose an encoder and output settings the streaming PC can sustain, and confirm your upload connection can carry the stream. A capture-card specification alone cannot guarantee a particular live-stream resolution or frame rate.

Capture-card problems and fixes

  • The card does not appear in the source list: Check its connection, power if required, driver or utility setup, and whether the card is recognized by the operating system. Reopen the streaming application after changing drivers or connections.
  • The card appears but cannot be selected or shows no picture: Check that the source device is sending video to the card’s input and that the chosen format is supported by both. Follow the card maker’s model-specific setup steps.
  • Another app is using the card: Close other software that may have opened the device, and check whether an existing scene or source is already using it. Streamlabs specifically notes that another program or active source can occupy a device.
  • Video works but audio is missing: Check the selected audio source and the card’s documented audio path. A video connection does not establish that audio is routed to the streaming application.
  • The stream stutters or the computer struggles: Reduce workload by reviewing resolution, frame rate, encoder and scene complexity, then test again. Check the software and card requirements and available upload bandwidth; a machine meeting basic requirements may still be unable to handle a demanding scene or output setting.
  • A stated card capability does not work in third-party software: Check whether that capability has different requirements outside the manufacturer’s own application. Elgato, for example, notes that using its 4K S with third-party software such as OBS, XSplit or Streamlabs can have different requirements from using Elgato Studio.

When a capture card is—and is not—the right tool

A capture card is useful when you need to bring video from a console, camera or second computer into a streaming-software scene. Before buying one, match the source’s video output to the card’s input, check the streaming computer’s ports and operating system, and verify the desired capture resolution, frame rate, audio path, passthrough and latency needs against the exact model’s documentation.
