While building a mocked streaming chat interface, I spent a day chasing rerenders—and discovered that my render-counting code was part of the problem. The useful lesson was not a benchmark or a universal fix: state placement mattered, and measuring a component by adding work to its render could change the behavior I was trying to observe.
The first problem: every token revisited a growing list
In my project account, I described building the token-handling flow by hand before trying useChat. The stream was mocked so I could focus on the interface, not on making a claim about network performance.

My implementation accumulated incoming tokens in an array of chunks, then mapped that growing array to display the message. Each update created a new array and revisited the chunks already received. I characterized that pattern as an O(N²) trap: if each update processes a list that grows with every token, the total work can grow roughly with the square of the number of chunks.

Actual cost depends on what each update does, how rendering work is structured, whether updates are batched, and which optimizations are active. The important debugging question was whether the work came from the stream, the component structure, or my measurement.

Then I found input state coupled to the chat list
At first, the input and message list shared a component. Typing changed the input state in that component, so the message list also rendered again. In my project, moving the input state into a separate component isolated typing updates to the input.
This is an example of state locality: place state near the UI that needs it, so an update does not needlessly involve unrelated parts of the tree. The exact rerender behavior I observed belongs to my project; it is not a guarantee that splitting any component will always improve performance.

My render counter became part of the bug
To count message renders, I put a console.log and a ref mutation in the message component’s render body. Then the behavior looked stranger: I thought the compiler had stopped memoizing that component. After I moved the log into an effect, the chunk stopped rerendering in the way I had been tracking.
React’s guidance explains why this measurement was suspect. The documentation says, “React assumes that every component you write is a pure function.” A component should return the same output for the same inputs; side effects belong outside render. React also explains that purity makes automatic optimizations possible. A log or mutation in render is therefore not a neutral observer: it changes the component’s behavior and can interfere with optimizations. The documentation supports that general principle, but does not independently establish the particular compiler bailout or result I saw in this project. React: Keeping Components Pure.

My punchline was: “My measurement was causing the bug.” That is my account of this debugging session, not proof that every unexpected rerender comes from instrumentation.
Why my development and production counts differed
I reported 872 renders in development and 426 in production. Those are counts from my project, not general React statistics or an independently reproduced benchmark.

React Strict Mode deliberately adds a component render in development to help reveal bugs caused by impure rendering. That makes raw development counts different from production behavior, but the documentation does not validate my exact counts or establish that Strict Mode alone explains the entire gap. When comparing counts, use the same environment and remember that development checks are not a direct measure of production cost. React: StrictMode.
What changed when I tried useChat
I later tried useChat. In my experience, the hook abstracted much of the stream plumbing I had written by hand. It did not, by itself, make each message component cheap to render. A hook can simplify how data arrives without deciding how efficiently every child responds to each update; that still depends on the application’s component and state structure.

My account is not a comparison across all SDK versions or usage patterns. The practical distinction is visibility: a hand-built stream makes fetch, reader, accumulation, and state updates explicit, while a hook hides much of that machinery. Neither approach removes the need to inspect the actual update path when the UI is doing too much work.

How to investigate streaming rerenders without distorting them
- Separate the stream from the display. Confirm whether each token update rebuilds or traverses a growing collection, and inspect the work performed for each item.
- Check where state lives. If typing in the input updates a component that also owns the message list, consider whether the input state can live closer to the input.
- Keep render pure. Avoid render-body logging, ref mutation, or other side effects as a counting technique. Use tools and instrumentation that do not change the component’s render logic, and interpret any instrumentation in context.
- Compare like environments. Development Strict Mode can add renders as a purity check; do not equate its raw counts with production behavior.
- Verify the conclusion cleanly. In my case, a clean Profiler read on a late commit without instrumentation was still outstanding. I therefore treat the apparent improvement as what I observed after moving the side effect, not as a conclusive profiler-verified result.
