Glide typing (a.k.a. swiping across letters) is one of the quickest parts of using Gboard—until a sudden bug makes swipes feel dead or inconsistent. Users often describe it as “it used to work, then my glide gestures stopped responding” or “the keyboard starts typing random characters.”
This guide is written for the common, temporary Gboard glide typing breakage. You’ll find fast fixes first, then deeper steps when the issue won’t go away. If you’re on Android, the steps below should cover the majority of cases.

Quick reality check: if glide typing is fully disabled everywhere and you can’t swipe at all, treat it like a settings or keyboard-session problem. If it only fails in certain apps, treat it like an app-specific conflict.

What the Gboard glide typing bug looks like
Typical symptoms include swiping across letters that produces no text, text appears only after lifting your finger, words come out garbled, or Gboard intermittently switches back to tap typing behavior. Some people also notice that the cursor moves correctly, but their swipe gestures don’t translate into characters.

Because this is often reported as temporary, it can disappear after a keyboard session restart—or after a Gboard update—without you doing anything complicated.
Why glide typing breaks (common causes)
Most glide typing “bugs” are actually one of these issues:
- A stale or buggy Gboard build (an update partially applies or introduces a gesture regression).
- Keyboard session stuck (a swipe gesture recognizer fails until the app is relaunched).
- Cache corruption (Gboard UI/gesture data mismatches after system updates).
- Conflicting overlays (accessibility services, screen readers, gesture navigation helpers, or floating tools intercept swipes).
- Wrong input method / default keyboard (your device is still sending input to a different keyboard instance).
Quick fixes (try in this order)
If glide typing is broken right now, start with the least destructive actions. In most reports, the fix is either an update or a restart + cache clear.

Go to Play Store → search Gboard → tap Update (or Update all if you see it). After updating, force-close and reopen the app where you type.
Use Wi‑Fi if you can; interrupted updates are a common trigger.
Restart Gboard (force stop) and reopen
On Android: Settings → Apps → Gboard → Force stop. Then open your messaging app and test glide typing in a fresh keyboard session.
If it works after a force stop, the issue was likely a stuck gesture state.

Clear Gboard cache, not storage
Settings → Apps → Gboard → Storage → Clear cache. Don’t choose Clear storage yet; clearing storage can reset learned behavior and language settings.
After clearing cache, restart your phone and test again.
Remove and re-add the Gboard keyboard
If your keyboard setup is inconsistent, removing and re-adding forces a clean input-method registration.
- Open Settings → General management (or System) → Keyboard list and default (name varies by brand).
- Tap Current keyboard / On-screen keyboard → disable Gboard.
- Enable Gboard again and confirm Languages are set correctly.
- Reopen your keyboard in a text field and swipe across letters.
Re-select Gboard as your default keyboard
Make sure Android isn’t routing input to a different keyboard. In Settings → System / General management → Keyboard → Default keyboard, select Gboard.
Then test in more than one app (Messages + Chrome address bar are good sanity checks).
Check glide typing-related settings
Within Gboard settings, confirm swipe-related options are enabled.
- Open any app that shows the keyboard.
- Tap the Gboard gear (or Gboard settings from the keyboard’s menu).
- Go to Preferences or Text correction (wording varies).
- Ensure options for glide typing/swipe typing aren’t disabled.
- Also check that Handwriting or other input modes aren’t hijacking your behavior.
If you see a setting that specifically mentions Glide typing or Swipe, toggle it off, wait 5–10 seconds, then toggle it back on.
Deeper fixes when quick steps fail
If glide typing breaks repeatedly (for example, after every phone restart), go deeper. These steps target conflicts and corrupted system keyboard state.

Safe Mode test (identify a conflicting app)
Safe Mode helps you figure out whether a third-party app is intercepting swipe gestures. Exact steps vary by device, but typically:
- Press and hold the power button.
- Tap and hold Power off until Safe mode appears.
- Confirm to reboot into Safe Mode.
- Test glide typing in your messaging app.
If glide typing works in Safe Mode, a recently installed app is likely the culprit. Remove candidates one by one (gesture managers, screen overlays, auto-responders, keyboard helpers, accessibility tools).
Disable accessibility or gesture overlays that can intercept swipes
Swipes are fragile when an accessibility service or overlay is watching touch input. Check these areas:
- Accessibility features like Voice Access, Switch Access, or screen readers
- Display over other apps tools (chat heads, screen annotators)
- Gesture navigation helpers (system mods, OEM gesture add-ons)
Temporarily disable the suspect service, reboot, and test. If it fixes the issue, re-enable services one at a time to pinpoint the conflict.

If your keyboard preferences got out of sync, resetting can help without wiping everything.
- Go to Settings → System → Languages & input (or Keyboard).
- Open On-screen keyboard settings.
- Reset keyboard settings (if your device offers a reset option).
- Restart the phone and confirm default keyboard is Gboard.
After reset, open a text field and test glide typing immediately.
Clear Google app/Play services updates (only if your device is stuck mid-update)
If glide typing started right after system or Google updates and hasn’t stabilized, it can be related to a partially applied component update. As a last resort:
- Update Google Play services and Google app from Play Store.
- Reboot.
- If still broken, check whether your device supports “clear cache” for Google Play services (avoid clearing storage unless you know what you’re doing).
Do this only if the timing strongly matches a recent update.

Device-by-device checks
OEM keyboards and gesture layers can affect how swipes are interpreted. These checks are quick and often reveal hidden conflicts.
Samsung One UI
Samsung’s keyboard and gesture options can sometimes interfere with swipe gestures when multiple input methods are enabled.
- Open Settings → General management → Keyboard list and default.
- Confirm Default keyboard is Gboard.
- Disable Samsung Keyboard temporarily and test glide typing.
- Check Accessibility for services that draw over other apps.
Google Pixel / stock Android
Pixel devices are usually straightforward, so if the bug persists, it’s more likely a Gboard build or a gesture conflict.
- Go to Settings → System → Languages & input → On-screen keyboard.
- Set Gboard as default.
- Update Gboard, then force stop and clear cache.
- Try in a different app (Chrome or Messages) to rule out app-specific issues.
Xiaomi / MIUI and HyperOS
MIUI/HyperOS sometimes applies power and background restrictions that can break keyboard session behavior.

OnePlus / OxygenOS
OnePlus devices can have gesture tuning and overlay features that steal swipes.
- Open Settings → Accessibility and temporarily disable suspect services.
- Verify default keyboard is Gboard.
- Force stop Gboard and clear cache.
- Test glide typing after closing all recent apps.
Workarounds while it’s broken
If you need to type right now and fixes take a few minutes, use one of these workarounds.
Switch to tap typing temporarily
Most users can still type by tapping letters. You can also use the cursor and backspace normally; glide typing is the only part that’s impaired.

If tap typing works fine, the issue is almost certainly gesture recognition, not the keyboard itself.
Use voice typing for urgent messages
Use voice input in your messaging app to bridge the gap. In Gboard, voice typing typically appears on the keyboard’s mic icon; tap it and speak.
It’s not a long-term fix, but it prevents missed deadlines.
Try another keyboard (temporary fallback)
If you need reliable swipe behavior, you can test another keyboard temporarily to confirm the problem is isolated to Gboard. Install and test, then switch back once Gboard stabilizes.
This is also useful for validating whether the bug is “systemwide” or “Gboard-only.”
Common mistakes that keep the bug alive
- Only toggling glide typing once and immediately closing settings—wait a few seconds and do a clean reopen of the keyboard session.
- Updating Android but not Gboard (or vice versa). Update both to reduce version mismatch symptoms.
- Clearing storage too early. Clear cache first; only clear storage if nothing else works.
- Ignoring accessibility overlays. Any “draw over” tool can steal swipe gestures.
- Testing in a single app. Some apps override input behaviors; test at least two (Messages + a browser field).
Troubleshooting checklist (if you want a single path)
Use this exact sequence when you want the highest success rate with the least disruption.
- Update Gboard in Play Store.
- Force stop Gboard, reopen the keyboard, and test glide typing.
- Clear Gboard cache, reboot, and test again.
- Verify default keyboard is Gboard in Android keyboard settings.
- Try glide typing in two different apps.
- Boot into Safe Mode and retest (identify conflicting apps).
- Disable overlay/accessibility services and retest.
If you still can’t restore glide typing after this, the issue is likely device-specific or tied to a particular Gboard version—at that point, waiting for the next Play Store update can be the most efficient move.
FAQs
Does clearing Gboard cache delete my data or saved words?
No. Clearing cache removes temporary files. Clearing storage is the action that can reset more settings and learned behavior, so cache-first is the safer approach.
Why does glide typing work in one app but not another?
Some apps use custom text fields or special input modes that can change how gestures are interpreted. Also, accessibility or overlay services can behave differently per app.
Will rolling back Gboard fix it?
Sometimes, but it’s risky and not always possible through official channels. The more reliable path is updating to the latest Gboard and then using cache/force stop if the regression is temporary.
How do I report the bug if it’s affecting many people?
In Gboard settings, look for feedback or “Report a problem.” Include the time you noticed it, your Android version, device model, and whether it started after a Play Store or system update.
Can gestures like “Swipe to switch apps” interfere with glide typing?
Indirectly. If an OEM gesture controller or overlay service intercepts touch input, it can reduce swipe gesture reliability inside the keyboard. Safe Mode helps confirm this.
Bottom Line
A Gboard glide typing failure is usually fixable without drastic steps: update Gboard, force stop, clear cache, and confirm you’re using Gboard as the default keyboard. When it’s a conflict, Safe Mode and overlay/accessibility checks are the fastest way to pinpoint the cause.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If you want the quickest win, follow the checklist in order and test in at least two apps. If the issue persists across reboots and Safe Mode, the next Gboard update (or a temporary keyboard workaround) is often the most time-efficient path.
