Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If you mean the Stoplight Studio desktop app, it has been discontinued. Stoplight still documents a browser-based editor with Form, Code and Preview views, so the whole Stoplight service has not been shown to be shut down. As of October 4, 2026, the right alternative depends on whether you want visual editing, a local VS Code workflow, hosted collaboration or registry-managed drafts—not on a proven overall winner.
What happened to Stoplight Studio?
OpenAPI.Tools lists the desktop version of Stoplight Studio as discontinued, while describing a browser edition that connects to GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket. Stoplight’s own getting-started guide still shows how to create an API project in its editor using OpenAPI 3.1 YAML and Form, Code and Preview views. That is evidence of a documented browser workflow, not a guarantee about future availability or product plans. Check OpenAPI.Tools and Stoplight’s getting-started guide for current status and access.

If you are looking for a visual editor to add endpoints and response codes without hand-writing every line, the browser Stoplight workflow is the closest documented fit in this shortlist. If you need editing inside a local IDE, compare the VS Code extensions below instead.

Five OpenAPI editing paths compared
This is a documentation-based comparison, not a hands-on ranking. The available evidence does not establish an overall best tool or a reliable price winner.
#1 Best Overall
| Tool or path | Documented fit and capabilities | Limits to check |
|---|---|---|
| Stoplight browser editor | For people who want to stay in Stoplight and can work through a browser and Git workflow. Stoplight documents Form, Code and Preview views and OpenAPI 3.1 YAML creation. | The desktop app is discontinued. Verify current browser access and plans before depending on it. Stoplight guide; OpenAPI.Tools listing. |
| SwaggerHub | A hosted option described as supporting collaboration, workflow standardization and centralized API discovery and consumption. | Detailed current feature tiers, pricing and hands-on authoring experience were not established here. Check the OpenAPI.Tools listing and SwaggerHub’s current product information. |
| Redocly OpenAPI for VS Code | For developers who want authoring and validation in VS Code. Documentation lists multi-file definitions, schema navigation, side-by-side documentation preview and interactive forms. | Live documentation preview requires an API key. Forms are limited to info, server and externalDocs. Documentation describes OpenAPI 2.0 and 3.0, with basic 3.1 support. See Redocly’s VS Code documentation. |
| 42Crunch OpenAPI (Swagger) Editor for VS Code | For developers seeking IDE navigation, editing and preview, with optional security workflow. Documentation lists JSON and YAML, IntelliSense, linting, navigation, Swagger UI or ReDoc preview, Try It, multi-file $ref support and quick fixes. | The listing describes the editor as free without registration or usage limits; additional generator, audit and scan tools have trial or enterprise conditions. Its cited documentation says v2 and v3.0.x support. See the 42Crunch VS Code listing. |
| Apicurio Registry 3.1.0 Drafts | For teams already considering Apicurio Registry that want Studio-like visual authoring. Drafts support iterative editing before an artifact leaves draft state. | This is editing within Registry, not an unchanged standalone Studio. Apicurio Studio was fully deprecated on 2025-10-23. See Apicurio’s deprecation announcement. |
Choose by workflow, not by the word “replacement”
Visual editing or code-first work
Stoplight’s documented Form and Code views combine visual and text-based editing. Redocly also documents interactive forms, but only for info, server and externalDocs. The evidence does not establish that either provides a form for every endpoint and response-code task, so confirm the exact authoring flow you need before migrating. Stoplight; Redocly.
Local IDE or hosted service
Redocly and 42Crunch are VS Code extensions. SwaggerHub is described as a hosted collaboration platform, while Stoplight’s browser editor remains documented. Stoplight says projects represent Git repositories and its pricing page lists integrations for GitHub, GitLab, Azure DevOps and Bitbucket. Check current product access and integration details directly: OpenAPI.Tools, Stoplight pricing.
Rank #2
OpenAPI version coverage
Do not infer specification support from the editor’s name or a directory label alone. OpenAPI.Tools marks Swagger Editor as supporting OpenAPI 2.0, 3.0 and 3.1. Redocly documents 2.0 and 3.0 plus basic 3.1 support, while 42Crunch’s cited editor documentation specifies v2 and v3.0.x. Verify the version and features you rely on in the vendor’s current documentation. OpenAPI.Tools; Redocly; 42Crunch.
Validation, references and preview
Redocly documents validation, multi-file definitions, schema navigation and a documentation preview. 42Crunch documents linting, navigation, Swagger UI or ReDoc preview, Try It and multi-file references. Before choosing, check whether your project’s authentication, file format and reference structure work with the editor’s preview and validation features. Redocly; 42Crunch.
Rank #3
Collaboration and artifact lifecycle
SwaggerHub is positioned around team collaboration and standardization. Apicurio Drafts tie visual editing to Registry lifecycle management: you iterate while an artifact is in draft state, then move it out of that state. Stoplight describes projects as Git repositories and lists several Git-provider integrations on its pricing page. These are different collaboration models, so choose based on where your team needs the API definition to live and how it moves through review. SwaggerHub listing; Apicurio announcement; Stoplight pricing.
Access and cost
There is not enough verified pricing information here to name a cost winner. Stoplight has a live pricing page; 42Crunch distinguishes its editor from additional trial or enterprise tools; and Redocly requires an API key for live documentation preview. Check the current plan and access terms for the specific features you need: Stoplight, 42Crunch, Redocly.
Rank #4
What to use if you need a local editor
If “local” means editing within VS Code rather than using a hosted browser editor, start by matching the extension to your requirements:
- Choose Redocly OpenAPI for VS Code if its validation, multi-file navigation and documentation preview meet your needs, and you can supply an API key for live preview.
- Choose 42Crunch’s editor if you want its documented linting, navigation, preview, Try It and $ref workflows in VS Code. Treat the editor and its separately conditioned security tools as distinct offerings.
- Consider Swagger Editor if its documented OpenAPI 2.0, 3.0 and 3.1 coverage fits your specification. OpenAPI.Tools lists it as a text editor; confirm compatibility against current product documentation before committing.
OpenAPI.Tools is a discovery index, not a substitute for the vendors’ current documentation. Its version labels and tool descriptions are useful for making a shortlist, but confirm support and access with the product source before a migration.
Where Apicurio Studio users should go
Apicurio Studio is not simply another active standalone editor: it was fully deprecated on October 23, 2025. In that announcement, author Eric Wittmann wrote, “As of today, Apicurio Studio is fully deprecated.” The post says core editing functions are available as an opt-in feature in Apicurio Registry 3.1.0 through Drafts. Teams considering this route should evaluate Registry and its draft workflow as a migration, rather than expecting the old Studio product unchanged. Apicurio’s announcement.
