A Galaxy screen normally goes black when you hold the phone to your ear: its proximity sensor helps prevent accidental touches, and the display should wake when you move the phone away. If it stays black when you need the call controls—or switches off at another time—check whether the cause is proximity sensing, an obstruction, ordinary screen timeout, or a model-specific issue.
First identify what is turning the screen off
Notice when the display goes dark and whether the call itself ends. A black screen only while the phone is near your face is usually expected proximity-sensor behavior. A screen that switches off after you stop interacting may be following the regular Screen timeout setting. If the call disconnects as a Galaxy Z Flip registers as folded, check the separate magnetic-accessory guidance below.

Check for something covering the sensor
A case, screen protector, sticker, dirt, or static near the sensor can interfere with detection. The sensor is near the front/top area, but its exact position depends on the Galaxy model.

- End the call and temporarily remove the case, screen protector, stickers, and other third-party accessories.
- Make a regular handset call and see whether the screen wakes reliably when you move the phone away.
- Gently wipe the front/top area with a clean, dry, soft cloth. Samsung’s US display guidance specifies a dry microfiber cloth. Do not use liquid or abrasive tools.
- Repeat the call test before putting accessories back on. If the issue returns with a particular accessory installed, it may be obstructing the sensor.
Samsung’s call-screen troubleshooting guide covers accessory removal, cleaning, restarting, and updates. Samsung’s display guidance also notes that dirt or accessories can affect the screen.
Compare handset calls with speakerphone or Bluetooth
Test with the phone held normally to your ear, rather than drawing conclusions from a speakerphone or Bluetooth-earphone call. Samsung Gulf says proximity sensing is deactivated while using speakerphone or Bluetooth earphones, so the display may remain on in those modes. That behavior may vary by model, software, and call setup; the handset test is the more useful comparison for this symptom.

Restart, update, and check the wake setting
- End the call, restart the phone, and place another handset test call.
- Check for available software updates using the update controls for your model, then test again. Menu names can vary; search Settings for “Software update” if needed.
- If the display does not wake as expected, try turning off Double tap to turn on screen under Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures. Samsung lists this as a troubleshooting step for wake problems; it is not a guaranteed fix for every call-screen issue.
Separate call sensing from Screen timeout
If the display goes black after a period without interaction, including outside calls, review Settings > Display > Screen timeout. This setting controls how long the screen stays on while idle; it is separate from the proximity sensor’s call behavior. A longer timeout can use more battery. If the screen merely gets dim rather than fully black, look at brightness or Power saving settings instead of treating it as a call-sensor failure.

If you have a Galaxy Z Flip, check for magnets
Samsung documents a specific exception for Galaxy Z Flip phones: nearby magnetic accessories or other magnets can make an open phone register as folded, and calls may end unexpectedly. Move magnetic cases, stickers, or other magnetic objects away and test again.
If the issue applies to your device, try turning off Close phone to end calls in the Phone app at More options > Settings > Flip options. This setting addresses calls ending when the phone registers as closed; it is not a general proximity-sensor fix for other Galaxy models. See Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip guidance.

Run diagnostics or contact Samsung if it persists
If the screen still fails to wake with accessories removed, after a restart and update, do not assume the sensor has failed. Samsung Gulf describes a regional diagnostic route in Samsung Members: Get help > Diagnostics > View tests > Proximity recognition. Availability and labels depend on market and model. Samsung’s guidance was last updated on 2026-04-28; check your local Samsung support information if that path is missing.
If the problem continues across handset calls, use Samsung support or an authorized service center for model-specific assessment. The exact menu paths and sensor location differ across Galaxy devices and software versions; Settings search or your model’s support page can help when a path does not match.
