Before buying a new router or extender, measure Wi-Fi in the rooms where it matters, improve the router’s placement, and check for congestion and outdated security settings. These free steps can reveal whether the problem is weak in-home coverage, a busy wireless environment, or the broadband connection itself—and help you choose the right fix.
Measure Wi-Fi before changing anything
Run speed tests in several parts of your home and write down the results before adjusting the router. Retest from the same locations afterward. Microsoft recommends this before-and-after approach to identify where performance is weak and whether a change helped: Microsoft’s guide to Wi-Fi and home layout.

A test over Wi-Fi measures the connection between that device and the test service at that moment. It does not, by itself, establish the speed your internet provider delivers to the home. Wi-Fi performance and broadband service performance are related but different: a weak wireless result in one room can coexist with a healthy broadband connection.

Move the router before changing settings
Place the router as close to the center of your home as practical, in an elevated, open position. Walls, metal objects, and other obstructions can weaken the signal. Microsoft Support puts it simply: “Place your wireless router as close to the center of your home as possible to increase the strength of the wireless signal throughout your home.” The guidance appears in Setting up a wireless network in Windows.
A router tucked behind furniture, inside a cabinet, on the floor, or at one far end of the home may leave distant rooms with a weaker connection. If possible, move it to a more central location and repeat the tests. The best position depends on the home’s layout and the devices using the network.

Also consider nearby sources of interference. Some equipment, including microwaves and certain cordless phones, shares the 2.4 GHz band used by Wi-Fi. If reliability drops when such equipment is active, test again after moving the router farther away or changing the equipment’s location.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose a Wi-Fi band that fits the room and device
Many routers offer 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi; some newer setups also offer 6 GHz. These bands involve trade-offs, and a device must support a band to use it.

- 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐲 𝐒𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐩 & 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Set up and control your network in minutes with the Deco App. Keep your WiFi performing at its best by keeping the firmware updated through the App. All Wi-Fi routers require a separate modem. ⌂
- 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐲𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- 2.4 GHz: It generally reaches farther and passes through obstacles better than higher-frequency bands, but it can be more exposed to congestion from other networks and devices.
- 5 GHz: It can provide faster throughput and has more non-overlapping channels than 2.4 GHz, but its range is shorter and obstacles tend to reduce its signal more.
- 6 GHz: It can provide strong performance nearby, but requires compatible Wi-Fi 6E-capable router and client hardware and has shorter range.
Do not force every device onto the same band without checking compatibility and testing the result. A phone near the router may perform well on a higher-frequency band, while a device farther away may have a more reliable connection on 2.4 GHz. Router menus and band-selection behavior vary by model.
Check for congestion before changing channels
If the router is well placed but Wi-Fi remains unreliable, inspect nearby networks and compare performance in different parts of the home. Microsoft recommends using a network analyzer to see nearby networks and their channels. This can help identify a crowded wireless environment before you change router settings: Microsoft’s Wi-Fi and home-layout guidance.

Router interfaces differ, and an available channel is not automatically the best choice for every home. Change one setting at a time, retest in the affected locations, and reverse the change if results get worse.
When to try a narrower 2.4 GHz channel
If the 2.4 GHz signal is strong and the channel is clear but reliability is still poor, a 20 MHz channel width may work better with some older adapters than a wider setting such as 40 MHz. This is a troubleshooting option, not a universal performance rule. Make the change only if the router exposes it, then compare results with the original setting: Microsoft’s guidance on Wi-Fi channels and layout.

Secure and maintain the router
Performance is not the only reason to review router settings. The FTC recommends securing the network and keeping router software current. In the router’s app or administration page, check for these settings; available names and options depend on the router and internet provider.
- Use current Wi-Fi encryption: Choose WPA3 Personal if available, or WPA2 Personal if WPA3 is not supported.
- Change both passwords: Set a strong, unique administrator password and a separate strong Wi-Fi password. Changing only the Wi-Fi password does not change access to the router’s administration settings.
- Update firmware: Install available router software updates, or enable automatic updates if the router offers them.
- Check the firewall: Confirm that the router firewall is on.
- Consider a guest network: Use one for visitors or devices you do not want on the main network, if the router supports it.
- Review optional features: The FTC recommends turning off remote management, WPS, and UPnP because they may weaken network security. Check what depends on them before disabling a feature.
See the FTC’s guidance on securing a home Wi-Fi network for details. If an older router offers only outdated security choices, first update its software and check again. If WPA2 Personal and WPA3 Personal are still unavailable, the FTC advises considering a replacement for security support—not because every old router is automatically too slow.
Choose an extender, mesh system, or replacement only for the diagnosed problem
Once you have measured performance and tried practical placement changes, match any further remedy to the problem. The key distinction is between a weak Wi-Fi signal inside the home and the speed or performance of the broadband connection coming into it.
| Problem you found | Possible next step | What it can and cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| A weak signal in a particular area, and moving the router or device closer is not practical | Try a Wi-Fi range extender | It may improve local Wi-Fi coverage. It does not increase the performance of the broadband connection itself. Results depend on placement and the home layout. |
| Persistent or broader coverage gaps across the home | Consider a mesh Wi-Fi system | Mesh uses multiple boxes around the home to improve in-home Wi-Fi coverage. It does not make the broadband connection faster. |
| The router still lacks WPA2 Personal or WPA3 Personal after a firmware update | Consider replacing the router for security support | This addresses outdated security options; it is not a blanket recommendation to replace working equipment for a speed increase. |
| Wi-Fi results are poor across locations, or the problem does not track with distance from the router | Investigate the broadband service separately | A Wi-Fi test alone cannot establish the provider’s delivered connection performance. Coverage accessories do not fix a broadband service issue. |
Microsoft suggests trying an extender when moving the router or device closer is not possible. Ofcom describes mesh as an option for improving Wi-Fi coverage around the home, while noting that better coverage does not improve broadband connection performance: Ofcom’s advice on improving your Wi-Fi experience. Neither option is guaranteed to fix every layout, so compare results in the problem areas after setup.
Quick Recap
Use a simple troubleshooting order
- Record a baseline: Test near the router and in the rooms with problems; note the locations and results.
- Improve placement: Move the router toward the center, raise it into an open position, and reduce nearby obstructions or interference sources.
- Test bands and congestion: Use bands supported by your devices, inspect nearby networks if needed, and change one channel setting at a time.
- Retest: Repeat the same tests in the same locations and keep any setting change only if it improves the result you care about.
- Choose equipment only if needed: Use an extender or mesh for a remaining in-home coverage gap; consider a replacement router if it cannot provide current security options.
