Check the local sunrise time, the direction the Sun will appear, and the weather before you leave. These depend on your location and date. Arrive early enough to settle on a composition and make a few test frames while the light is changing. Look for foreground interest, a leading line, or a framing element that helps the viewer understand the scene. Take one frame with the Sun visible and another that shows its effect—such as warm light on a landscape or a structure. Keep distracting objects near the edges out of the frame when you can.

How should I set iPhone focus and exposure?
In Camera, tap the part of the scene you want in focus. Use the on-screen exposure control to brighten or darken the image: move it down when you want to protect bright sky color, or up when you need more foreground detail. Lock settings for a sequence
If focus or exposure keeps shifting between frames, touch and hold the chosen area until AE/AF Lock appears. This locks focus and exposure so you can make several frames with consistent settings. Tap elsewhere to release the lock when you want the camera to meter a different part of the scene.

How do I keep the sky from looking washed out?
Start by reviewing the iPhone’s automatic HDR result. Apple says iPhone can enable HDR automatically when it determines it is most effective; HDR combines rapid captures at different exposures to retain more highlight and shadow detail. It can help with a bright sky over darker land, but it does not remove the creative trade-off between those areas. Apple’s iPhone camera guide to HDR.
Choose which part of the scene gets priority
- Keep the sky’s color and texture: lower exposure if the bright areas are losing detail. The foreground may become dark.
- Show more foreground: raise exposure if the land, buildings, or people matter most, while watching for lost highlights in the sky.
- Use a silhouette intentionally: expose for the bright sky and let a recognizable foreground subject remain dark.
Compare the frames by the subject, sky detail, foreground legibility, and whether the composition communicates the scene. There is no single exposure that suits every sunrise.

When should I stabilize the iPhone?
If the scene is dim enough for Night mode, keep the phone still throughout the capture. Apple recommends placing the iPhone on a solid, secure surface or using a tripod to increase stability. Choose the support that suits the location
- Handheld: convenient when you need to move quickly, but harder to keep steady during a longer Night mode capture.
- Secure surface: a no-cost way to steady the phone; check that it cannot slide or fall.
- Tripod: offers steadiness and more framing control, but requires a compatible, secure phone holder.
Once the phone is supported, avoid touching it until Night mode finishes. The capture may take longer than a normal frame.
