There is no single autoplay switch that controls every video. A browser setting can stop websites from starting media, while a video service’s own control may only stop the next video, a preview, or the next episode. Change the setting that matches the behavior you want—and check each device or profile where the service keeps separate preferences.
First, identify which kind of autoplay you want to stop
- Video starts when a webpage opens: Change the browser’s media-autoplay permission. Depending on the browser, this may block sound, video, or both.
- Another video starts when the current one ends: Turn off the service’s “play next” or autoplay setting.
- A preview starts while browsing a service: Turn off that service’s preview autoplay preference.
- The next episode starts: Change the separate next-episode preference, if the service provides one.
These controls do not necessarily affect one another. Firefox’s guidance, for example, distinguishes blocking media on a website from disabling a platform’s “Play next video” feature (Mozilla Support; Mozilla’s explanation).

Block autoplay in a browser
Firefox: block audio and video, or make a site exception
- Open Settings, then select Privacy & Security.
- Under Permissions, select Settings next to Autoplay.
- Set Default for all websites to Block Audio and Video, then save.
This option blocks all media, including muted video—not just clips that make sound. To allow or block autoplay on a particular website, use the site information panel from the address bar or change that site in the autoplay permissions list. Menu names and placement can vary between Firefox releases. See Mozilla’s Firefox instructions.
Microsoft Edge: choose Allow, Limit, or Block
- Open Settings.
- Go to Cookies and site permissions, then Media autoplay.
- Choose Allow, Limit, or Block.
Microsoft describes Limit as Edge’s default. Whether media is allowed to autoplay under that setting can depend on your previous interaction with the site. Microsoft’s guidance is for the US market and notes that functionality and availability may vary by region. See Microsoft’s Edge autoplay guidance.

Turn off autoplay in a video service
YouTube: stop the next related video
YouTube’s Autoplay setting controls whether another related video begins after the current video ends. It is not a browser-wide block on videos starting when a webpage loads.
- Computer: Use the Autoplay switch in the video player.
- Android or iOS: Select your profile picture, open Settings, then Autoplay.
- TV: Open YouTube app Settings, then Autoplay.
YouTube says autoplay preferences can differ by device. If videos continue on another device, check that device’s setting too. See YouTube Help.

What to check when autoplay continues
- It happens as soon as a page opens: Review the browser’s media-autoplay permission; a service’s next-video switch may not control page-load playback.
- It happens after a video ends: Check the video service’s own autoplay or next-video setting.
- A preview still plays: Check the profile’s preview preference rather than the next-episode setting.
- It happens on only one device or profile: Check settings on that device and profile. YouTube explicitly allows different autoplay settings on different devices.
- The browser or app labels differ: Labels and placement can change between releases. Look in the current settings for Autoplay, Playback, or Media.
Settings that depend on the app and version
Exact current controls for services such as Safari, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok are not established here, so a specific menu path or a complete disable switch cannot be confirmed. Check the service’s current settings for Autoplay, Playback, or Media. If you need to stop webpage media from beginning, also check the browser’s own site-permission controls.
