Open the chat’s upload control, select several files together in the file picker, and send one prompt explaining what you want done with the group. Claude also documents dragging files into a chat. The exact limits and controls depend on the service, plan, and whether you’re using a work or consumer version.
How to attach several files at once
- Open the chat where you want the assistant to use the files.
- Choose the plus or upload control to open the file picker.
- Select multiple files in the picker using your device’s normal multi-selection behavior, then confirm. The files should appear as attachments in the conversation.
- Write one prompt that names the task and applies it to the whole batch. For example: “Compare these proposals and list the differences in price, timeline, and risks.”
Claude’s Help Center also documents dragging and dropping files into a chat. The multi-select approach is the common shortcut across the services covered here; a particular upload button’s appearance can vary by app or interface.

These are vendor-stated limits in guidance retrieved on October 5, 2026, not independent performance measurements. Keep per-chat, per-action, and long-term storage limits separate: they describe different things.

Tell the assistant what to do with the batch
Attaching a set of files gives the assistant material to work with; it does not specify the task. State the output you want and any comparison criteria or constraints. OpenAI Academy’s file guidance gives examples such as comparing documents and analyzing a spreadsheet.
- Compare: “Compare these contracts. List clauses that differ and identify the section in each file.”
- Summarize: “Summarize each report in three bullets, then give me the themes they share.”
- Extract: “From these receipts, make a table of date, merchant, and total. Flag anything unreadable.”
For high-stakes work, verify important details against the source files. A concise prompt can organize the task, but it does not remove the need to check the assistant’s output.

When to use a Project, cloud files, or smaller batches
Use a Project or workspace for ongoing reference
If you expect to return to the same material in later conversations, use the service’s persistent-file feature where available rather than reattaching the same set each time. ChatGPT Project file totals depend on plan, while Claude offers a Project Files section. These features are separate from a one-time batch upload.

Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat documents attaching OneDrive files. Use the available cloud-file option on your own surface when it is supported, instead of downloading and re-uploading the documents.

Split a batch that exceeds a limit
If the upload is over the file-count or size limit, divide it into smaller groups. Ask the assistant to process each group in the same way, then provide the resulting summaries or outputs together for a final comparison. Check file type and content limits too: Claude says non-PDF documents are text-extracted, while PDF visual processing depends on page count and model; Microsoft’s format guidance differs between work and consumer Copilot.
