Reddit, X, and Discord handle these jobs differently; none provides a universal blocked-users manager. Choose between blocking, muting, reporting, banning, or filtering based on the problem—and check your app’s current settings, since platform features and labels can change.
Choose the control that matches the problem
These controls are not interchangeable. A personal block limits interactions with an account; a mute reduces what you see without necessarily alerting the other person; a report flags possible rule-breaking for platform review. Community bans and mutes are moderator tools, while filters help moderators surface or restrict likely problem content and accounts.

- Stop an individual from contacting or interacting with you: use a personal block, then review any separate chat or friend-request settings.
- Reduce what appears in your feed without notifying the account: consider muting where the platform offers it.
- Address content that may violate platform rules: report it rather than treating a block as enforcement.
- Keep someone out of a community you moderate: use that community’s ban tools; a personal profile block is not a substitute.
- Handle recurring moderation workload: review available queues, logs, automations, and safety filters.
Before choosing, ask who needs the control (you or a moderator), what it restricts (visibility, replies, messages, or community participation), whether the other person may notice, and whether the action can be reviewed, reversed, or appealed.

Reddit: keep personal blocking separate from moderator enforcement
For your own account
Reddit lets you block someone from their profile or through settings. The blocked person generally cannot access your profile, and you will not see their profile or feed content. Blocking also restricts direct replies, votes, awards, and messages. Reddit documents exceptions: existing shared group chats can remain available, and moderators retain specified abilities in communities they moderate. Some content can be expanded for review and reporting.

Reddit Help states that the current limit is 1,000 blocked accounts; that figure is specific to Reddit, not a cross-platform standard. See Reddit’s explanation of how blocking works.
For a community you moderate
A profile ban alone does not stop someone from contacting you. Reddit documents blocking or turning off chat requests as separate controls. For community participation, moderators can issue temporary or permanent bans; for mod mail, they can apply temporary mutes. Actions can include a rule-based reason, a user-facing explanation, and a moderator-only note, and moderators can later edit or remove an action.

Reddit advises using bans and mutes sparingly alongside clear rules and expectations, and allowing appeals. Its moderator tools also include a mod queue, mod mail, automations, and a Mod Log covering moderator and administrator actions from the last 90 days, according to Reddit’s moderation overview. The general mute tool lasts 72 hours; longer mutes are available through mod mail. These durations describe Reddit features, not other platforms. For repeated or hard-to-spot risks
Reddit’s optional Safety Filters cover suspected ban evasion, reputation, harassment, and other content or user risks. Moderators can adjust ban-evasion filtering by timeframe and confidence. Reddit describes the harassment filter as powered by a model trained on moderator actions and content removed by its internal tools and enforcement teams. Filters support moderation; they do not replace clear rules or a review process. Details are in Reddit’s Safety Filters documentation.

X: use mute for discretion, block for stronger limits
X says a muted account cannot tell it has been muted. Blocking is more restrictive: it limits following, direct messages, and engagement. But a blocked account may still see your posts if your account is not protected, and may discover the block by visiting your profile or trying to follow you. If content or an account may violate X Rules, report it separately; blocking is not a report.
You can view your block list on X.com and in the iOS and Android apps. X also says the former feature for importing and exporting blocked-account CSV files through X.com is no longer available. Users can still view and export the list through account data in settings. Avoid relying on older instructions that describe CSV sharing as a current feature. Discord: block a person or prevent requests more broadly
Discord supports blocking from member lists, profiles, friends lists, and direct messages. If unwanted contact comes from people you do not know, friend-request permissions can reduce requests before you need to block specific accounts: Discord lets you limit requests to friends of friends or server members, or disable all eligible options to accept requests from nobody. These permissions and blocking address different situations—one narrows who can request contact, the other targets an account. Check the current controls in the app and consult Discord’s blocking and privacy guidance.

How to keep a block list useful
- Identify the goal. Decide whether you need less visibility, fewer incoming contacts, a report reviewed, or a moderator action that removes someone from a community.
- Apply the narrowest suitable control. Mute when discretion is useful; block to restrict interaction; report suspected rule violations; use community bans and mutes only in a moderator role.
- Review the list in the platform’s current settings. X explicitly supports viewing its blocked-account list and exporting it through account data, but not the old X.com CSV import/export workflow. The cited Reddit and Discord guidance explains blocking, not an equivalent cross-platform export feature.
- For moderator actions, record the reason and follow the community’s process. Reddit provides user-facing explanations and moderator-only notes, along with logs and appeal guidance. Use available review tools rather than treating a personal block as a moderation record.
- Revisit controls when the situation changes. A personal block, a community ban, and a contact-request restriction have different scopes; changing one does not necessarily change the others.
