You can orchestrate bronze-to-silver-to-gold workflows with Apache Airflow. But the medallion layers describe how lakehouse data is organized and refined; they do not require Airflow, or any particular orchestrator. If your Airflow DAGs mostly launch jobs on a lakehouse platform, consider whether that platform’s pipeline capabilities should own the transformations while Airflow coordinates only the work that genuinely spans systems.
Medallion layers and Airflow solve different problems
In Databricks’ description, bronze holds raw ingested data, silver contains cleaned and validated data, and gold is refined for analytics and business use. These are stages of data organization and quality—not Airflow task types. Databricks calls medallion a recommended best practice, not a requirement: What is the medallion lakehouse architecture?

Airflow, by contrast, models workflows as directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) of tasks and dependencies. Its documentation says it is agnostic about what a task runs; tasks can fetch data, perform analysis, or trigger other systems. That flexibility means Airflow can orchestrate medallion work, but it does not make Airflow the only place that work must be defined or executed. See the Apache Airflow architecture overview.
Why reconsider Airflow as the home for every pipeline concern?
The title is a recommendation to check the division of responsibilities, not a claim that Airflow cannot support this architecture. A design can become awkward when DAGs serve mainly as launchers for platform jobs while the team also maintains a separate deployment path, permissions, monitoring, retry behavior, and dependency representation in Airflow. Whether that overhead is real or significant depends on your system; there is no universal operational-cost result established for this choice.

Ask whether your current design gives each system a clear job. Which system runs transformations? Which coordinates work across platforms? Where are data dependencies represented? Who diagnoses failures and owns retries? If the answers create duplicated configuration or unclear ownership, evaluate moving transformation execution and its closely related pipeline logic into the lakehouse platform, where available.
Choose the responsibility boundary that fits your workload
| Decision area | Airflow-centered approach | Lakehouse-platform pipeline approach |
|---|---|---|
| Transformation execution | Airflow schedules tasks that run transformations or trigger platform jobs; the exact execution model depends on your setup. | The platform’s pipeline environment runs transformations, if it provides the capabilities your workload needs. |
| Dependencies | Airflow represents task dependencies in DAGs and also documents asset-aware scheduling for data dependencies. | Evaluate how the platform represents dependencies between data transformations; the cited documentation does not establish a cross-product feature comparison. |
| Cross-system coordination | A general workflow coordinator may fit when the flow spans systems or independently owned workflows. | A platform pipeline may fit work that is primarily transformation inside that lakehouse environment. |
| Operational ownership | Consider the deployment, permissions, monitoring, and failure handling your team must own for Airflow and connected jobs; effort is environment-specific. | Consider what ownership shifts to the platform and what still needs external coordination; effort is environment-specific. |
Databricks documents integration with external orchestrators, including Apache Airflow, through APIs or dedicated connectors. So the choice need not be all-Airflow or no-Airflow: a platform can execute transformations while Airflow coordinates wider workflows. The Databricks reference architecture supports this integration pattern, not a universal ranking of tools.

When Airflow remains a sensible choice
- Your workflows coordinate multiple systems, not just transformations within one lakehouse.
- Your team benefits from Airflow’s explicit DAG model for task-to-task dependencies.
- Producer and consumer workflows have separate ownership, and you need to coordinate them through data updates.
Airflow’s asset-aware scheduling can express data dependencies between DAGs: a successful task updates an asset and can schedule a consumer DAG. A failed or skipped task does not update that asset and therefore does not trigger the consumer through that update. Review the Airflow asset scheduling documentation for the behavior relevant to your Airflow version.

- Map the actual workflow. Mark each step as ingestion, transformation, validation, publication, or coordination with an external system. Identify where each step runs today.
- Trace dependencies and success conditions. Decide what must be true before downstream work starts, and which system records that the producer succeeded. For Airflow asset scheduling, a failed or skipped producer task does not publish the asset update that schedules a consumer.
- Compare operating responsibilities. List the schedulers, deployment processes, permissions, monitoring surfaces, retries, and on-call ownership your team would maintain under each design. Treat this as a local assessment rather than assuming one option takes less effort.
- Keep orchestration where it adds value. If work is mostly transformation within a lakehouse and its native pipeline model meets your needs, test letting that platform execute the pipeline. Retain Airflow where it provides useful cross-system coordination or dependency handling.
- Verify the implementation details. Check the documentation for your deployed platform and Airflow versions before changing scheduling, connector, permission, or failure behavior.
The useful conclusion
Do not reject Airflow because your data uses bronze, silver, and gold; the concepts are compatible. Reconsider it when it has become an extra layer that duplicates pipeline responsibilities without giving your team useful coordination. Use the lakehouse platform for transformations when its capabilities and operating model fit, and keep Airflow when a general orchestrator is solving a real cross-system problem.
