Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf your Windows 11 taskbar disappears when you want it visible, turn off Automatically hide the taskbar. If you want it to disappear until needed, leave that setting on and move the pointer to—or touch—the bottom edge of the screen to reveal it. “Locking” the taskbar’s layout and auto-hide are separate settings, so locking it does not keep it on screen.
First, identify which taskbar behavior is wrong
“Keeps hiding” and “won’t stay locked” can describe different problems. Work out which one you see before changing settings:

- The taskbar disappears, but you want it visible: turn off automatic hiding.
- The taskbar stays visible, but you want it to disappear: turn on automatic hiding.
- The taskbar is hidden and will not reappear: check that auto-hide is on, then move the pointer to or touch the bottom edge of the screen.
- The taskbar’s arrangement changes: treat that as a layout issue; the lock setting is separate from auto-hide.
Keep the taskbar visible
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
- Expand Taskbar behaviors.
- Clear the checkbox for Automatically hide the taskbar.
Microsoft’s Windows taskbar guidance documents this setting and path. With automatic hiding off, the taskbar should remain visible.
Use auto-hide and reveal the taskbar
If you prefer the taskbar hidden when it is not in use, enable Automatically hide the taskbar under Taskbar settings > Taskbar behaviors. To reveal it, hover the pointer over or touch the bottom edge of the screen, as Microsoft describes in its taskbar instructions.

Understand what “lock the taskbar” changes
Locking is about keeping the taskbar configured as set; automatic hiding controls whether it is visible when idle. They are not interchangeable. Microsoft’s taskbar guidance describes locking and auto-hide separately, so a taskbar can be locked and still auto-hide. If your goal is to keep it on screen, turn off auto-hide rather than relying on the lock setting.

Consider system-file scans only if the issue persists
The same community answer suggests running DISM and SFC scans and then restarting the PC if restarting Explorer does not help. These are further troubleshooting suggestions, not proof that corrupted system files are causing the problem or a promise of a fix. The cited answer does not provide a universal diagnosis for taskbar settings that fail to persist.

What to check if the problem continues
The documented setting and reveal gesture explain normal behavior, but they do not establish why a particular PC’s taskbar behaves differently. To narrow it down, note your Windows build, whether the device is a 2-in-1, whether the problem occurs with one or multiple displays, and whether the taskbar vanishes, stays visible, or fails to reappear.
Microsoft preview notes for KB5120998 (OS Builds 26200.9278 and 26100.9278, dated August 27, 2026) and KB5124006 (OS Build 28000.3086, dated September 22, 2026) mention improved reliability when loading the taskbar system-tray area on non-touch PCs. Neither note identifies the auto-hide symptom discussed here as a fix; see the KB5120998 update notes and KB5124006 update notes.
