In Phone by Google, turn on caller ID and spam protection, then enable Filter spam calls if that option is available. It filters calls the app identifies as spam; it does not silence every caller who is not in your contacts. Calls from schools, clinics, delivery drivers, and other new numbers may still come through.
Turn on spam filtering in Phone by Google
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap More options (the three-dot menu), then Settings > Caller ID and spam.
- Turn on See caller ID and spam.
- If you see Filter spam calls, turn it on to send calls identified as spam to filtering.
Google says some steps require Android 6.0 or later. The exact controls can vary by device, and the filter toggle may not appear when automatic Call Screen is enabled. On Pixel phones, options vary by model, so check the settings available on your device rather than relying on one universal menu path. Google’s Phone app instructions explain the controls.

What filtering changes—and what it does not
Spam filtering and blocking unknown or private numbers are separate controls. The spam filter acts on calls identified as spam; it is not a rule to reject all numbers missing from your contacts. Google’s Android guidance discusses blocking unknown or private numbers separately and says that setting does not affect numbers that are not saved in your contacts. Do not turn on contact-based or private-number blocking if you need calls from legitimate unsaved numbers. Android’s guidance on stopping and blocking unwanted calls describes the distinction.

Google says spam calls cannot be completely eliminated. If an expected call is missing, check the call history and voicemail before assuming it was blocked.

- REDUCE UNWANTED CALLS & TAKE BACK CONTROL – The CPR V100K helps reduce unwanted spam, scam and robocalls on your landline. Known nuisance numbers in the preloaded database are blocked automatically, while new unwanted callers can be blocked at the touch of a button.
- 100,000 KNOWN NUISANCE NUMBERS PRELOADED – Includes a large database of known nuisance numbers for immediate protection. The database contains reported nuisance numbers from across the USA and is not a list of 100,000 numbers specific to your local area.
- BLOCK NEW CALLERS WITH ONE TOUCH – Scam callers frequently change or spoof their phone numbers, so no call blocker can stop every unwanted call automatically. When a new unwanted number gets through, simply press the large red BLOCK NOW button to prevent repeat calls from that number. Store up to 10,000 additional numbers.
- SIMPLE TO USE – NO APP OR SUBSCRIPTION – Connect the V100K to your compatible landline and start taking control of unwanted calls. No app, Wi-Fi, monthly subscription or external power supply required. The large display and tactile BLOCK NOW button make it particularly easy to use.
- IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY INFORMATION – Requires an active Caller ID service. Designed for compatible traditional analog landline services. Not compatible with many internet-based or digital VoIP telephone services. Please check your telephone service before ordering.
Where filtered calls go
Google’s Phone app Help explains: “You don’t get missed call or voicemail notifications, but filtered calls are in your call history and you can check your voicemail.” Review recent calls and voicemail if you think a legitimate caller was classified as spam. If a number is marked incorrectly, use the app’s Not spam control to report the mistake. Google Phone app Help describes this behavior.
Consider Call Screen only if your device supports it
Call Screen is different from the basic spam filter: on supported devices, it can answer or screen unknown callers, filter detected spammers, and show information before you decide whether to pick up. Availability depends on device, country, and language. Google Play says automatic screening is available only in the US and English, while manual screening is not available in every country or language; screening may also miss spam. Check the options shown on your phone and the Phone by Google listing before relying on it.

Check privacy and data handling
Google says Phone may send information about calls to Google to identify callers or determine whether a call is spam when a number outside your contacts calls you or you call it. Google also says it does not get phone numbers from your contact list. This is Google’s description of the feature’s data handling, not an independent audit. Read the app’s current privacy information if you want to assess whether that data flow suits you. Google’s help page explains its caller ID and spam protection.

If the filter is missing or not enough
- Check the Phone app and device controls: The filter may be unavailable on your device or absent when automatic Call Screen is active. Pixel options vary by model.
- Review Call Screen availability: It is an option only on supported devices and in supported regions and languages; it is not a universal Android setting.
- Investigate third-party call-screening apps cautiously: Android supports call-screening apps, but their features and privacy practices differ and can change. Review current permissions and data-handling terms before installing one; this is an alternative to investigate, not a tested recommendation. Android’s developer documentation describes supported call-screening APIs, including access to carrier verdict data on Android 11 and later devices that support the relevant APIs. That does not mean every phone or app receives identical data. Android Developers: Prevent caller ID spoofing.
