Stop Siri From Interrupting You: Which iPhone Setting to Change

Find the iPhone setting for Siri interruptions, unintended wake activation, and spoken headphone announcements—and learn why the menus may vary.

If Siri cuts in while it is speaking, go to Settings > Accessibility > Siri and turn on Require “Siri” for Interruptions, if the option appears. It makes Siri require the wake phrase before an interruption. The setting is not available on some iPhone models that support Apple Intelligence, so the menu may differ or the control may be missing.

Choose the fix for the behavior you mean

What is happening What to change What the change does
Nearby speech or audio interrupts Siri while it is responding Turn on Require “Siri” for Interruptions in Accessibility > Siri, if available. Requires the wake phrase to interrupt Siri; voice activation remains available.
Siri wakes when you did not mean to address it Turn off voice activation in Siri settings, or place the iPhone face down as a situational workaround. Turning off voice activation prevents starting Siri with the wake phrase. Face-down placement prevents the iPhone from responding to “Siri” or “Hey Siri.”
Siri speaks calls or notifications through headphones Adjust Announce Calls or Announce Notifications in Siri settings. Controls announcements through supported headphones; it does not change whether Siri is interrupted while responding.

Require the wake phrase to interrupt Siri

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility, then Siri.
  3. Turn on Require “Siri” for Interruptions, if shown. Apple describes the control as requiring “Siri” or “Hey Siri” to interrupt Siri.

If you cannot find the option, it may not be shown on your iPhone. Apple notes that this control is absent on some iPhone models that support Apple Intelligence; its documentation does not provide a complete compatibility list by model, iOS version, and region. Do not assume that every iPhone has it.

Turn off voice activation if Siri wakes unintentionally

This is a broader change than requiring the wake phrase for interruptions: Siri will no longer start by listening for “Siri” or “Hey Siri.” Open Settings > Siri or Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri, depending on your software. Tap Talk to Siri or Talk & Type to Siri, then choose Off. Apple’s setting names and paths vary across software generations.

If you only need a temporary workaround, Apple says to place the iPhone face down to prevent it from responding to “Siri” or “Hey Siri.”

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Change call or notification announcements separately

If the unwanted interruption is a spoken call or notification in supported headphones, look in Siri settings for Announce Calls or Announce Notifications. Choose Headphones Only if that option is available and matches your preference. These announcement controls address calls and notifications, not other people’s speech interrupting Siri’s response.

Why the setting may look different

Depending on the iPhone’s software, Siri settings may appear under Settings > Siri or Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri. The voice-activation control may be labeled Talk to Siri or Talk & Type to Siri. For interruptions, check Settings > Accessibility > Siri first; if the targeted control is absent, the broader voice-activation setting is a different option, not a hidden equivalent.
