jev-cli turns a text-classification question into a structured decision that a shell script, CI job, batch process, or agent can consume—rather than requiring code to scrape a changing paragraph from a generative model. It is an open-source command-line client for TypeSafe AI’s Jev model, not local inference or a general-purpose text generator. Evaluating content requires a TypeSafe API key and sends that content to TypeSafe’s API, according to the project repository.
How do I stop parsing LLM answers?
Ask for a decision in the shape your program needs. With a conventional generative model, a request such as “Is this customer angry?” may return an explanation wrapped around the answer; code then has to interpret variable prose. jev-cli is designed to return typed output—such as a yes/no judgment, a choice, or a score—so a script can branch on a result instead of extracting meaning from natural-language text.

That can reduce output-parsing work, but it does not make the decision inherently correct. The project describes jev as a tool for decisions, not a replacement for an LLM. Its comparison with keyword rules and generative answers is the project’s own framing, not an independent benchmark.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keyword rules | Deterministic matches; scripts must encode and maintain the rules. | Can run locally, depending on the implementation. | Rules are repeatable, but may miss context or require ongoing tuning. | Explicit patterns and conditions that can be reliably expressed as rules. |

How can I classify text from the terminal?
Write a question that states the judgment you want, supply the text, and choose the answer type that matches the decision. The repository’s examples include customer-ticket triage, moderation, changelog gating, routing, and document checks. The question is part of the classification design: “Is this customer angry?” asks for a different kind of result than “Which team should handle this?”

Use noul for a yes-or-no property
Choose noul when the decision is whether a stated property applies—for example, whether a ticket contains a refund request. The output is suited to a Boolean-style branch. Make the property specific enough that “yes” and “no” have clear operational meanings.
Use choice to route among alternatives
Choose choice when the text should be assigned to one of a set of named options, such as a support team or moderation category. The repository says this type supports up to 255 options. Keep the options distinct and relevant to the downstream action; a classification cannot route correctly if the categories overlap or omit the necessary destination.
Use score for a described scale
Choose score when a graded result is more useful than a binary answer. The repository describes a scale with 2–10 levels. Define what the ends and, where relevant, intermediate levels mean in the question so the score has an operational interpretation. Treat it as the model’s judgment on that described scale, not as a calibrated probability unless the task and evidence establish that interpretation.

Can a shell script get a yes/no answer with a confidence score?
jev-cli documents structured JSON output, scalar selection with --field noul, and exit codes that let scripts distinguish a met condition, a false condition, an error, or an abstain-band result. Its threshold and abstention options are workflow controls: they let you decide how to handle a model result, but do not establish accuracy on your own text or data.
When invoking jev through a pipe or redirection, the repository says it emits JSON. For a scalar field, it documents --field noul. Use the output format appropriate to the consumer: a single scalar can simplify a narrow shell check, while JSON is more useful when the workflow needs multiple fields or additional context.
Documented exit codes
| Code | Meaning in the project documentation | Typical handling |
|---|---|---|
0 |
Evaluation succeeded and the gate condition was met. | Continue the success path. |
2 |
Usage or validation error. | Fix the command, input, or configuration; do not treat it as a classification. |
3 |
API key missing or rejected. | Check credentials and access configuration. |
10 |
Evaluation completed, but the condition was false. | Run the workflow’s false-condition path. |
11 |
The answer fell in an abstain band. | Defer, request review, or apply the workflow’s explicitly chosen uncertainty policy. |
The repository documents --fail-under for thresholding and --abstain-band for uncertainty handling. Set these according to the consequences of a wrong decision: an automated moderation block, for example, may warrant a different review path from a low-impact ticket label. The flags do not supply a universally correct threshold.

How can I route support tickets with an LLM?
For routing, define the available destinations and ask a choice question that maps the ticket text to one of them. That gives the next step a category to act on, rather than requiring it to infer a route from a free-form explanation. The same pattern applies to moderation categories, changelog checks, and other text-based gates described by the project.

- Branch on structured results. Handle the documented exit codes and output format explicitly; keep usage and credential errors separate from evaluated outcomes.
- Test on the workflow’s own examples. Thresholds and routing logic are choices to validate against the task’s consequences, not guarantees supplied by the CLI.
How can I install jev-cli and configure access?
The project repository lists install scripts for Linux and macOS and for Windows, Homebrew, prebuilt installation through Cargo, and installation from source with Cargo. Follow the current instructions for your operating system in the repository, since commands and release details can change.
To evaluate content, configure TYPESAFE_API_KEY or use jev auth login, as described by the project. The CLI is open source under Apache-2.0 or MIT licensing, but that does not make model evaluation offline or remove the need for TypeSafe access.
The repository says its install scripts check SHA-256 hashes and minisign signatures when minisign is installed. It also says jev contacts GitHub Releases for update checks unless those checks are disabled. These are statements from the project, not independent security-audit findings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can jev-cli run offline, in CI, or with an AI agent?
Evaluation is not wholly offline: the project says text is sent to the TypeSafe API when content is evaluated, so account for that data flow before using it with customer or otherwise sensitive text. The repository says offline validation, checking schemas and specifications, and dry runs are available without an API key. Those capabilities can help validate a setup without performing an actual content evaluation.
The project also describes multi-question configuration files and batch evaluation, including concurrency, back-off, and resume support. For agent workflows, it describes an MCP server, command specifications, schemas, offline validation, and dry-run behavior. These are capabilities described by the repository; their presence is not an independent assessment of performance or suitability for a particular CI pipeline or agent.
What are the limits of a model-based text decision?
Results can vary
The repository says Jev’s answers are “Not bit for bit.” It recommends comparing against a threshold instead of requiring exact equality, and pinning a versioned model when stability matters. It also warns that jev-latest can change without notice. A version pin can help control which model version a workflow requests, but it is not a guarantee that evaluations will be correct.
Do arithmetic, counting, and date comparisons in code
The project expressly says Jev cannot do arithmetic, counting, or date comparison. If a task needs the number of matching reviews, a sum, or a check that one date precedes another, calculate that in ordinary code; use the model only for the text judgment the workflow actually needs.
Do not confuse a score with proven accuracy
The repository includes example probabilities and cost estimates, including an illustration involving 50,000 reviews. Those are examples in project documentation, not independently validated performance, calibration, or comparative cost findings. No independent accuracy or calibration study is established by the sources cited here, so test the chosen question and decision policy on representative data before relying on automated outcomes.
Quick Recap
When is jev-cli the right tool?
- Consider it when the task is a text judgment and downstream code needs a typed answer, such as a triage label, moderation decision, or document gate.
- Prefer ordinary code for exact rules, arithmetic, counting, or date comparisons.
- Use a generative model when the main task is to create, explain, or transform text rather than classify it.
- Plan for an API-backed workflow if evaluating real content; jev-cli is not local inference, and the project says evaluated content is sent to TypeSafe’s API.
- Make uncertainty explicit with thresholds, abstention handling, and human review where the consequences justify them.
