To cut down on unwanted calls without automatically sending every unfamiliar caller to voicemail, go to Settings > Apps > Phone and set Screen Unknown Callers to Ask Reason for Calling. Choose Silence if you would rather stop unsaved numbers from ringing. Before using either option, save important expected callers—such as family, a school, or a medical office—to Contacts.
Choose how your iPhone handles unsaved numbers
Apple’s current iPhone settings offer three choices for screening unknown callers. The right one depends on whether you want a screening step, fewer rings, or no change to the way unfamiliar numbers reach you. Menu wording and availability can vary by software version and region. Set up screening without missing expected calls
- Save key numbers first. Add people and organizations you expect to hear from to Contacts. This is especially useful before choosing Silence.
- Open the call settings. Go to Settings > Apps > Phone, then find Screen Unknown Callers.
- Choose Ask Reason for Calling or Silence. Select the option that matches your tolerance for interruptions and your need to receive calls from unsaved numbers.
- Review filtered calls. Open Phone and check the Unknown Callers list for missed calls and voicemails from numbers not in Contacts. If an expected caller appears there, save the number or mark it as known when that option is available.
Unknown Callers and Spam filters do different jobs
The Unknown Callers filter organizes missed calls and voicemails from numbers that are not saved in Contacts. It does not identify a call as spam by itself. The Spam filter, when available, relies on your carrier identifying a call as potential spam or fraud; those calls can be silenced, sent to voicemail, and placed in the Spam list. Carrier identification is not a guarantee that every unwanted call will be caught.

To review either list, open Phone and use its call-history filter, then choose Unknown Callers or Spam if shown. In iOS 26 and later, the Phone app’s Unified layout places the call-history filter under Calls; in Classic layout, use Recents. Some filters depend on your network provider. Apple explains the layouts in its Unified layout guide.

Know the screening limitations
- Call screening may use standard call and data rates.
- Screening does not work while roaming.
- After you call emergency services, screening is turned off for 24 hours.
- On software older than iOS 17, screening also requires Live Voicemail. Live Voicemail is not available everywhere; Apple describes its behavior and availability in its iPhone voicemail guide.
