You can reduce unwanted interruptions by screening unknown callers, sending unsaved numbers straight to voicemail, or silencing calls your carrier identifies as spam. These are separate iPhone controls, and none guarantees that every unwanted call will be caught.
Choose how your iPhone handles unknown callers
Apple’s unknown-caller controls apply to numbers that aren’t saved in your Contacts. On current iOS versions, open Settings > Apps > Phone and look for Screen Unknown Callers. If that option is available, choose the setting that suits the calls you expect.

Ask Reason for Calling
With Ask Reason for Calling, the iPhone asks an unsaved caller for more information before ringing. Apple says that after the caller shares their name and reason, the phone rings and presents the response so you can decide whether to answer. This can help when you may need calls from schools, clinics, delivery drivers, or new clients but want context before picking up. Apple Support explains call screening.

Silence
Silence sends calls from unsaved numbers to voicemail without ringing. Choose it if avoiding interruptions matters more than answering a legitimate first-time caller immediately. Save important numbers in Contacts to reduce the chance that their calls are treated as unknown. Apple’s unknown-caller guide also explains how missed calls and voicemails can be kept in an Unknown Callers list.

Never
Never lets unknown callers ring normally. Use this if you want calls from numbers not in Contacts to come through without screening or silencing.
Turn on the carrier’s Spam filter separately
The Spam filter is different from unknown-caller screening. It relies on your carrier identifying a call as potential spam or fraud; when available and enabled, those calls are silenced and sent to voicemail. It does not catch every unwanted call, and whether the filter appears depends on your carrier. In Settings > Apps > Phone, check the call-filtering options and turn on Spam if it is offered. Apple describes this carrier-based feature in its call-screening and blocking instructions.

Additional filters, including Spam, depend on the carrier. See Apple’s guide to the Unified layout in Phone.
